Wind Deflector

Mine stays in place all the time. Have roof down whenever possible. Deflector diffuses following headlights.

Only downsides: roof down makes interior dirty & deflector filthy. Wash it in shower (and you'll see).

Thanks, I keep getting outbid on fleabay, usually in the last couple of seconds.

You have to keep looking on eBay. When I was looking most auctions were ending around the 120 mark and some trade sellers were selling them on buy it now for around 150 or more, I think they still are. After many months of looking I finally got lucky, someone had one up in as new condition complete with the bag and instructions for 80 GBP and I made him an offer of 70 which he accepted. I am now on the hunt for the two pieces that go in the left and right roll hoops.

Pop it in the little bag and slip it behind the passenger seat. You never know when the sun might shine and you need it in an emergency. No good if it's in the boot.

If it’s sunny i retrieve it from the boot :P

The E85 had the right idea with brackets to hold the wind deflector mounted on the underside of the bootlid  . I'm guessing the E89 couldn't do this if there wasn't enough clearance between the boolid and the roof cover when its down? Although it would have to be very tight not to fit the width of the wind deflector. Strange that it seems BMW didn't consider it for the E89. :?

I am selling my Z4 this week. Probably sell the wind deflector separately. I'll let you know.
Otherwise, expect to pay up to £110 in mint condition with the bag. No need to pay more.
I think I actually bought mine off Gumtree a couple of years ago.
Good place to check too.
Thanks, much appreciated.
Never thought of gumtree.
Mine has the fittings for the central section but the seller I bought the car from never had it although the hoop deflectors are in place.

Do all the roll hoops have the attachments for the inner hoop mesh, or would the roll hoop covers with the holes only have these attachment points?

Presumably they are all the same plastic moulding?

Doesn't look like it. If you look a few posts up there are members who have retrofitted it and it seems pretty straightforward, unlike the E85's which were guaranteed to snap clips when separating the roll hoop covers :x

I found the left and right hoop mesh parts for £177 each on ebay + postage!

I will be sourcing some mesh fabric and making these myself.

177 each? I really don't understand the mentality of some these sellers, they are 'only' around 100 GBP each brand new from BMW. Second hand they shouldn't really be anymore than 20 or 30 GBP! I found a breaker here in Spain who wanted 70€ each needless to say the hunt still goes on.

Does the hoop mesh actually make much difference?
Just wondering, as it is shielded by the headrests anyway.

I’ve not tried without the hoop mesh fitted but I’d guess every little helps, the headrests are in front but they won’t stop the turbulent air from going round the sides & into the cabin :?

Ok, was only wondering. Tbh, I don't have a wind deflector in mine, and don't really feel the need for one, but I guess on longer journeys on main roads I may do.

It is madness, it just looks like fabric attached to a wire assembly which clips in.

My plan is to fabricate some by sourcing mesh fabric and putting in eyelets. Since the fabric attachment is not visible it should look the same as oem, or close to.

If you can do that it certainly would be interesting and way cheaper. If I remember correctly there is someone on fleabay selling the mesh fabric. Just do a search for E89 Z4 wind deflector and it should come up.

Found the supplier, thanks!

I have been looking at the hoops inner moulding.

The straight up ghetto solution would be to force the fabric over the hoop connectors, so it is stretched tight.

Managed to get a central section from fleabay. Just need to be able to get out in the car sometime to try it out.
Finally got it, a lot of money for something so small and simple but I suppose that's BMW for you.

Read my comments earlier in this thread.
The bits that fit on the rollover hoops are less than £10 for both from a main dealer, and the fixings under the hoops are standard on ALL Z4's whether you have the hoop or not.

So all you need is a wind deflector, and the fixing brackets.
The fixing brackets are about £10 the pair, including all the screws etc. That's it.

PLUS, The mesh parts are not very expensive from the main dealer direct.
You don't need them, they are virtually cosmetic. I have experimented with and without them.
I would challenge anyone to spot the difference. If anything, I felt the turbulence was less WITHOUT the mesh.

Interesting, I may get them, just for the OEM look.

Do the brackets come with the screws and screw caps?

It seems they sell those separate, but not sure if included?

I think you misunderstood. I have already fitted the brackets to the hoops and the central deflector which as you say is an easy job, just drill two holes in each hoop and screw in the brackets. What I was referring to were the mesh deflectors that fit inside the left and right hoops, even if they may not do much I would like to complete the look. These little deflectors are very expensive from the stealers and come to think of it from the breakers too, new they are around 100 quid each!
