Wind Deflector

Hi guys,

As the summer starts to dawn, I wondered if anyone has had any issues putting up their wind deflector? Since I'm using the lockdown as a good opportunity for basic maintenance, I've been fiddling with the deflector and found that its either A: the wrong way around, or B: far too small to actually reach both headrest attachments.

Haven't managed to find many other people with the same issue so perhaps this is a me issue rather than a common occurrence?

This is what it should look like.

You haven't got an E85 deflector have you?

I believe the E89 one folds but the E85 doesn't.

The 'flat' side faces the front. if its genuine it should fold length-ways along the centre line.
If its a genuine item and for the E89 it will fit, it cannot be 'too short'.
My car is stored away from home, maybe someone with a car at home can take a few close up pics for you..

CAr looks great Tinker, is that one yours?

Yes. Had it for 18 months now. I’ve left it on SORN until we can get out and about again! 😢

My 23i was titanium silver, one of the best colours, really shows off the contours.

I haven't seen that colour before, looks awesome.
Any more pics?
This is my last Zed, 23i, same colour

I am really really bored, so just popped the roof and took some pics.
Hope it helps.

As mentioned earlier the flat side goes to the front and the contoured side, as shown in the photo goes to the back.
Then gently press down and push forward, towards the front of the car to engage the wind deflector in the mounting bracket.
Do the same to take it off. Gently press down and pull back. Gently...

FITTING YOUR OWN BRACKETS

If you don't have a wind reflector, then buy a used one on ebay. Expect to pay around £100.
Then order the two brackets from any BMW dealer. They are about £10 for the pair, which includes the screws. That's all you need.
You then carefully 'prize off' the silver roll over rear covers with just your fingers. Do not use a screwdriver, you will damage the plastic. You only need to pull off the back covers. Grip then well and ease away, starting at the bottom first, and then the top. They are tight, but only clipped in place in rubber sockets. I put a little vaseline on mine when I refitted them in-case I want to take them off again. Why!!!!
Once off, you will need to drill two holes in each cover to fit each bracket. This is dead easy, because there is a pre-threaded hole in the frame of your roll over bar. It is simply concealed by the silver roll-over cover. So lining them up is a doddle. I used a little masking tape and lined them up. Super easy.
Then, after you have drilled two neat holes, push the silver covers back into place and then screw the fixing brackets onto the roll-over bar, as shown in the photo. The whole job took me 30 minutes. Honestly, anyone can do it.
Job done.

I've seen a few which include a bag, whereabouts should it be stored when not installed or do you just leave it in place all the time?

Mine hibernates in the boot over winter, i don’t think there’s a “proper” place for it :?

I can’t see the problem with leaving in, I’ve only taken mine out when giving the car a good clean

When not in use mine sits behind the seats in the area behind the net.

Pop it in the little bag and slip it behind the passenger seat. You never know when the sun might shine and you need it in an emergency. No good if it's in the boot.

Thanks, I keep getting outbid on fleabay, usually in the last couple of seconds.

I am selling my Z4 this week. Probably sell the wind deflector separately. I'll let you know.
Otherwise, expect to pay up to £110 in mint condition with the bag. No need to pay more.
I think I actually bought mine off Gumtree a couple of years ago.
Good place to check too.
