why the hell buy a roadster/drop top?

Funny thread, and some great answers.

I'm of the "topless is a choice, not a rule" school. It's really quite simple: if I feel like putting the top down, it goes down. If I don't I leave it up. Often a drive will entail a mixture of the two states.

Part of the freedom of a ragtop is the freedom to choose (which is why I don't like hardtops much).

I have the irrational fear of wearing the motor out as well so don't put it down for short start stop journeys where I'm going to be parking.

I have the same irrational fear hence never touch the button. The top is always down and always comes out on a good day.

I like to :poke: but have always been a top down person tbh.

Also the added pleasure of top down, air-cooled engine with rumbling dansk
exhausts behind your head puts on the biggest smile ever. Motoring heaven.

Ps. On another forum I'm always getting ridiculed for having a 993 cab.
Apparently I should have a coupe. :headbang:

I normally have the top down. If you looked at my arms. You would think I was of Hispanic origins. Of course, If I was to moon you. You could tell right away I'm a pasty white guy of British origins.
I do run the AC/heat with the top down. In traffic I prefer top down. As then I don't have a blind spot. I have to admit though. If I'm on the autobahn droning away at 115+MPH it can get rather loud and drafty. I don't have a roll bar deflector screen. I find that windows down does lessen the back draft a lot.

I don't begrudge a person that has a roadster and doesn't put the top down. They just should be made to wear a headband with a large pink "L" stuck on it. :poke:

Since I bought a ragtop I've always driven with the top down - all year and all times of the day. Winter driving and night driving can be fantastic. Top down motoring is a wonderful experience. I can understand the worry that some folk have about ridicule and the like but always thought that by being out there and having the top down all the time would encourage others. So we can all be trend setters and set an example by being out there with the top down. I'd like to think I've noticed more people driving about with their roof down around where I live? - result?!

On the subject of ridicule, must be a city thing or some such. :poke: The only comments I ever get, driving around Cornwall, are complements on the car.

Coming home, from a surf on Tue afternoon. Top down, sun burning bright in the clear blue sky. The only breeze generated by the 3.2ltr of Bavaria’s best under the bonnet. A short, slow, little cut through, I use to get around the village centre at Callington, two young lads walking the other way, "Nice car Mr" :D , "Thanks Lads" and on my merry way. 8)

Great thing with the E89 is it looks just as good with the top up :P

Tim.

How's the E89 boot space with the hood open?
A few weeks ago I picked up the wife's 3er from the local dealer. My buddy and I were looking at a new 3er folding hard top. When we opened the boot, I swear there was not even room for a pack of fags in there. I thought to my self. Whats the point of that. A weekend get away with the wife with the hood down would be impossible if the 89 has the same issue. I hope it's not that bad.

Space is just fine, weekends away go commando

I've never experienced hassle in 7 years of constant open top motoring either - I do get positive comments about the car. The Z4 is an impressive car though and those not in the know always seem impressed. Bentley Continental owners have come over for a chat at petrol stations (that never happened in my MX mind) though some people think the car must be very expensive and therefore can think you're made of money...
Anyone else think the rear of the Z4 has the look of Marcos sports cars of the 70/80 and 90s?

I'm guilty.

Lovely sunny morning and I took the truck instead of the Z this morning

In my defence I had to carry a bike into work this morning.

Sadly on Saturday I had to take the car for a short drive with the hardtop on.... Mrs A wasnt around to help me lift the roof off, and it'd on the car for storage in the garage.

Luckily we got the roof off for a drive later in the day :)

I will be driving roof up tomorrow irrespective of weather because of a need to be able to take calls. If you spot me on the way to Guildford to Reading, please don't crucify me later... :P
