Why is the coupe rated so highly ?

The roaster / coupe choice was hard to make when I bought mine. I had 198K miles driving my Focus RS as a daily; had just taken early retirement (in my mid fifties - yah hay!) so didn't need to arrive places in a suit looking presentable. In the end I went for the 3.0 roadster so I could extend the top down season (now twelve months in the year) that was a little more limited in the Caterham with no weather gear no heater and 4 point harness (only so many layers you can wear) - the Z4 roadster being a little more grown up. But it was a close call.

The coupe has if I understand correctly two engine options 3.0 and 3.2 I suggest that this attracts a more purest/petrol head/performance owner base. The roadster with the varying engine sizes and trim levels draws a more diverse range of owners some section of whom don't hold the same core views as coupe buyers. I'm not suggesting in anyway a slur based on engine size or option level just that not all roadsters went to die hard performance lovers. Just saying like - and waits to be mocked

honestly from my pov it is the shape/looks of the car that sold it for me.

roadster is a pretty car but with roof up looks a bit weird.. a bit like a pram, coupe on the other hand is sexual from every angle. Had to tick the box and own it.

In terms of the drive, the roadster wins in quite a few areas, first the oral experience.

I didn't know roadster owners were fond of eating their car?
Strange bunch :D

Oops I mean aural

The transmission tunnel is way too high ...

I’m glad to hear that roadster owners aren’t losing any sleep over their lack of stiffness though - and I bet you’re right - I’m sure no one will notice.

Speak for yourself, my seat’s as low as it goes and I’m grateful for the ‘helmet’ bulge in the roof :D

Coupes of any description always look better to me than their roadster sibling. However once the roofs down for me the verts have it. Ive always opted for that roof down driving experience as you just can't beat it. Roof up and roof down feels like two different cars. The weight shift of the roof from above you to stowed behind you is noticable in my opinion in most verts .
Stiffness wise I don't think the E85s stiffness is an issue, as others have said it's plenty stiff enough. It not like scuttle shake is an is an issue as the car was designed as a vert from the get go. Contrast that with something like an audi a3 cab 09-13 and they flex horribly, you can really tell the roof chop was an after thought.
I've no direct experience of driving the coupe and roadster back to back but I've driven boxsters and caymans back to back and can honestly say I didn't notice the Cayman was stiffer/better handling etc. It's proven to be stiffer and it's supposed to handle better according to many. Maybe if I'd been on a track Id have noticed, but on the road I didn't notice, maybe I needed to try harder!😂

Helmet bulge

I did my best to not bring up the smutty connotations of this typo to the forum, 'cause we're all adults right and we'd never be so childish

Both great cars. For me the open roof experience was key. Coming from an S54 Z3M (blimey, wish I had kept that as an investment), then into an E46 M3 coupe, I really missed the convertible. I think as a second vehicle (alongside the family bus) a car needs to feel like an event to drive and the roadster will always feel like more of an event than the coupe IMHO. For me, that made the decision quite easy.

For others, perhaps using the car as their primary means of transport, I can see why the coupe might appeal more.

Of course; that's why I drive a nice practical hatchback

Phew... I knew that some ladies are attracted to good looking cars but I didn't get an"oral" experience since owning the Z4MC!

Thanks for the giggle!

couldn't resist...apologies for being childish

I think the coupe looks great and probably handles a lot better with the body being so much better braced, for me I only wanted a roadster. It's my weekend car and the fact that the roof goes down is more important than chassis flex, each to their own though. I can appreciate the rarity and looks of the coupe and why people love them so much

I love the roof down experience of the roadster, it makes it a treat to go out in. If I want a solid roof, I use the Fiesta or my van :P

I love the roof up experience of the coupe, short of the new AMG GTS coupe (in green) it’s one of the most stunning shapes on the road. If I want no roof the bike comes out to play. :P :poke:

You have no other choice than the roof up experience in a coupe :poke: :P

Yeah. Had the choice to buy a vert in the first place :D

Had convertibles for 12 years prior to getting the Z4. The truth was I rarely benefitted from them because as soon as the weather was good enough the car tends to get shunned for the bike.
The thing I do miss though is driving with the roof down at night. My last car I think I probably covered as many top down miles in the dark as I did in the daylight.

Yeah, something about driving at night with the roof down
Bikes are a whole different story though, you can't beat the feeling of freedom and the power. I wouldn't mind another bike :) .
