Why is the coupe rated so highly ?

Seems like to many it’s the holy grail of Z4 ... of course minus the M that goes without saying.

Is it purely because not as many were made ?

Personally I don’t like them think the standard Z4 looks miles better .

Will always be subjective to personal taste & thoughts but for me its rarity on the roads ( Si now around 1200 in UK / M 500ish )
The rakish styling is proving to be long living & after 12years on the road they still turn heads in any car park , ive just bought my third & still admire the quirky looks the same now as with previous ones , i really can't imagine a time they will ever not be desirable
Some may say a tad more practical too , can fit a couple of Border terriers in quite easily :P

I like the lines of the coupe, but I'm always surprised when I see that they command a higher price (sometimes by 2k) over the same engined roadster. I guess as Mr Wilks says it may be down to rarity, and of course how much you care for top down motoring over the coupe feel

Yes the E86 looks the b*ll*x. Yes they are a lot stiffer and handle better. Yes they are more practical on a daily basis, BUT can you drop the roof and go out for a blast on a sublime day (or night !) with all the sites, sounds, smells, and evocative feelings it brings ? NO ! :(
Dropping the roof on a Zed is for me a 'special' occasion every time. :D

Have to say though, you can drop both windows on the coupe and compared to other cars I've had they are buffet free and you don't get any of the wind harmonics that you get in the back with a saloon for example. Ok, it's not top down motoring, but it's pretty pleasant and 60% the way there. Plus when the inevitable rain comes, you don't need to pull over to cover up...

The lines of the coupe, particularly the side profile, is stunning and timeless.

I love my roadster, but the coupe looks better.

It has to be the looks and the rarity. The slightly better refinement and ease of maintenance of the fixed roof don’t make up for the lack of topless motoring.

In my opinion, the coupe is a lot more refined for every day / touring use. There's a lot less noise in the cabin from wind, tyres, exhaust etc. The interior feels far more spacious and there is more visibility out of the car. Plus the boot is very large, so overall makes it a great tourer. It's just as sporty as the 3.0si roadster too

I love my coupe as a daily driver and longer trips and also love my M roadster for weekend blasts

Horses for courses :P

Thats easily solved with a roof module. One of my first mods 8 years ago.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

Mrs G hates the Coupe. I think it looks nice enough, but I still prefer the look of the roadster with the roof down. 8)

I love the look of the Z3 Coupe far more. Much more thuggish. :D

I think the higher prices reflect the fact that there are far less of them around than Roadsters.

I've never owned a convertible - I don't know why, but I've never wanted to drive with the roof down. Maybe owning motorbikes meant I wanted the added refinement of a roof on my cars! :?

Anyway, when I decided to look for a Z4 it just had to be a Coupe - I love the styling, especially the "double-bubble" roof! Much better looking than a Roadster with the roof up IMO. Not so much difference once the Roadster is open-topped.

Plus it one less thing to go wrong! :)

Still, so long as it is a Z4 there isn't a wrong answer!

The Coupe is a real head turner, for sure. Non-car people also tend to think it's brand new if you put a private plate on there. One of my neighbours thought I was winding him up when I told him mine was 12 years old 8)

Personally I prefer the looks of the Coupe (although I certainly don't mind the Roadster). I think the back end is one of the best looking things on the road, and do think that the Coupe has aged a bit better.

The Coupe shell has about twice the rigidity of the Roadster, so it probably drives quite a lot better if you like to go fast - which I do. I've only ever test-driven an E85, and it was before I got my Coupe, so I can't really comment there though. The Coupe is also likely to be safer if you flip it - again giving it more value as a high performance / track car.

In general, there's just a big sense of occasion to the car for me. You see so few of them around that it does feel quite special. I've got a few thumbs ups from other Coupe drivers, etc. It's the first car I've owned that can draw people over at a car meet, too. I go to Cars and Coffee a fair bit, and usually have a bit of a competition on with my mate who drives an R32 Skyline GTR as to who can draw the biggest crowd

That is a question that has crossed my mind more than once. The coupe is definitely better looking than a roadster with the roof up but roof down, IMO the roadster knocks the coupe out the park  I can't comment on how the 'added stiffness' improves the handling of the car as like the majority of Z4 drivers, I am not a skilled enough driver to push either car to its true limit.

I believe it must be the rarity, after all if the pig ugly Z3 bread van can command such a premium then it makes sense the E86 can too :P

I think it’s just the classic long nose, seat over rear wheel shape. Very e type jag. It’s soooo low to the ground. When I took a test drive in my Coupe after several years apart, I was a little surprised how low it is. Having got used to washing my 3 series and wife’s Countryman, such a low car really stands out!

Should have bought a roadster. 8)

I like the E-type analogy. I often tell myself my Z4 is the E-type I'll never afford - unless I sell the house and live in it!

But the only E-type I ever wanted was the FHC - like that red one Corgi did a model of in the 60s!

If you ever get to drive an E type you'll be massively disappointed...it's a terrible car, with terrible build quality and no real memorable driving thrills. Some old cars are lovely to drive, but the e type definitely isn't one of them...!

Roadster owners don’t need to worry about rusty tailgates :poke:
