Why Didn't you buy a Boxster?

We had a white one as a pool car at work last summer when they were first launched, didn't ever see another while driving it. The seats are a leap ahead of all other Porsches apart from the GT3 RS.

The one we had was a manual as the boss hates ALL autos so we weren't allowed PDK. It did have just about every other extra though. Fantastic chassis and hard to beat for hitting corners at full pelt. I never even came close to the cars limit in terms of grip. However, I was surprised at how hard you had to push it to feel any kind of excitement. It just felt so tame and not very special when driven round the doors. In total contrast, having a test drive in an ///M felt like sticking a saddle on a lion and getting someone to spray deep heat on it's tadger.

In the end we (the boss man) got rid of the spider after only a couple of months because the roof annoyed him so much.
 
I chewed on the Boxster for a while, I liked the precise steering but as a third toy car and I just can't justify outlandish expenditure on repairs or maintenance (i.e Mrs Ewazix won't have it!). For me it came down to service costs and reliability, a simple scan of adverts will turn up lots of Boxters boasting huge recent bills for RMS seals and or engine re-builds, can't think I've seen anything similar on a Z4.

Warranty direct figures based on real world claims rates the Boxster at 195 (0 being best 200 worst) with an average repair bill of £825, so about as bad as it gets http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/162

against the E85/6 Z4 with a rating of 95 (Average/good) and an average repair bill of £327 http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search/28

In the end I drove the Z4 and preferred the more rugged driving experience, and I don't look like a tart as me dad would say :wink:

They are GT3RS seats, about £5-6k's worth on the second hand market!!

had my boxster for just over 2 years and was a 1999 model 2.7 with 48000 when i bought it and 54000 when sold
in that time apart from changing the tyres/discs/pads which are wear and tear it cost me 400 for a new alarm unit and 150 for a key. had 1 maor service at 400
not that bad

been an active member on boxa.net and dont hear too many horror stories

thanks for the link to the reliability scores, i see the best scor in category was the SLK by a large margin
any comments on a 3.0 SLK?
 
To summarise, the reasons people chose the Z4:-

1) Preferred the looks
2) Cheaper to buy, service and run
3) In M form its quicker, rarer and more exciting
4) Reliability worries
5) Because it's a Porsche

I know the magazines all prefer the Porsche but they always do. It's all a bit predictable. I'm sure the Porsche is the better car to drive quick across a range of road surfaces effortlessly but that isn't what everyone wants. Some people want some devilment or if they aren't in to caning a car they might value looks or running costs far more than handling prowess. I take what motor journalists say with a pinch of salt anyway. When EVO writes an article about the M having run-flats and electronic power steering why should I give two shits about what they think about a particular car's merits.

That's what I meant. The seats in both are the same and are better than the ones in any other Porsche I've seen. My take on the Porsche seats are that the standard ones are better than the standard ones in the z4. However, the sports seats in the z and the ///M are miles better than the Porsche sports seats. The buckets in the spyder are miles ahead of both. They are alcantara loveliness.

Pacemaker, I see you recently sold your boxster. It was a lovely example and hope you got a good price. Best of luck with finding a replacement........in saying that, don't even think about the 3.0 Merc. Mercs are not for people that actually like cars :rofl:

I've always hated the "poor mans Porsche" label given to the Boxster. Best reply I ever heard to that statement was "yes, it is. What kind of Porsche do you have?"
 
The 911 Convertible profile just looks wrong to me, and the Boxster is a much better looking car....the 911 looks better with the roof up. So what's the point. And at £60K ish, what's poor about that? :cry:

Agree on the 911 cab. Looks like a pram. There's something about them I've never liked.

The "poor mans Porsche" thing is BS. There wouldn't even be a Porsche now if the Boxster hadn't come along when it did.

The new 911 Carrera 4S looks absolutely stunning, but in convertible guise makes Quasimodo look attractive, as for the poor man's Porsche that's just pure snobbery.

If that, it's often not from from 911 owners being snobby about Boxsters, it's just jealousy from other car owners, or a perception that Porsche drivers are some sort of tosser, so people love to hate them. Like the BMW haters, or hairdresser comments that ANY roadster attracts.

Interestingly, I watched Beethoven (the 90s dog film) the other day and the evil vet guy drives a Porsche. It's a 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera, but there was clearly a decision from the film creators along the lines of "We need a car for the rich evil bar-steward character in our film, what car will be suitable?"

I immediately thought of Jeff Goldblum's a-hole club owner character in "Thank God It's Friday" (1978 disco movie ... please do not interpret this as a recommendation ... :wink: ). The Porsche gets totaled in the parking lot though, so it's OK.
 
Here's another one, the bloke that's a complete jerk to the protagonist in Bridesmaids drives a convertible 911 Carrera S.

Hollywood - ruining Porsche ownership since 1931.

Kevin bacon in "Hollow man" drives a Boxster.
Hank Moody drives an old 911 convertible, but he's not exactly your typical bad guy. :D
