Why bother buying a convertibel?........

Juste like WLH : driving a ragtop is about having a choice.
People who never put the top down are as despicable as people who want you to always have your top down.

All depends on the journey, to short and I can't be bothered but now I can drop the roof remotely those times are getting less and less, long motorway journey sometimes get bored by the buffering and the roof goes up. But generally if it's dry and bright the roof is down.
I know what you mean though we couldn't believe how many cars the roofs up the other weekend around Darlington when it was absolutely glorious mid 20s.

I just don't think it ever gets too hot in the Uk to keep the top up...but its each to their own of course! Despicable ....nah...all entitled to an opinion etc

I certainly am not happy when having to have the top up.. (first three times I drove my new to me Z4 in June had to pull over due to sudden rain -thank goodness for quick roof) .Although also understand the long motorway trips may justify............but iw as referring to local town/village driving when sooooo many keep top up . If that's the case when its hot ypu can bet they will not go top down when its cooler!!

Viva la topless!!!

Last week when it was hot i was driving my mum about so left the roof up.. as she didnt want it down.

But its all about choice... after owning a softtop of some sort for over 5 years now the novelty to always have the roof dropped has worn off.

Depends.
- Driving to/from the train station (to/from work)---I keep the top closed. It's only a 5 minute drive.
- Driving with lots of stuff in the trunk I keep the panel in the up position / roof closed.

If it's too-too hot we keep it closed too and keep the a/c on. It's around 31 degrees right now, so it's not too bad. But when it hits 34 we keep it closed and AC on... especially if we're going to a function and in dress clothes.

:o Roof down is a way of life, a calling, an expression of self, a religion, the world is a better place with the roof down :)

I have driven convertibles for so many years i can't really imagine life without one and after spending 3 months travelling around europe in an MG Midget at an earlyish age it was never really going to work having a hardtop :)

Each to their own but i have to say i just can't bear having the roof up, it's a shame you don't feel quite the same but rock on and enjoy those times you do go roofless  :driving:

Another factor which is more important for me than temperature is humidity. Often where I live (SE Pennsylvania) when temps get to up around 32 C or higher we also usually have very high humidity. Often 80 to 90% + and that become very uncomfortable. However, during the cooler months we usually have very low humidity. It not uncommon to have temps around freezing where the humidity is 40% or even lower and mix that with a little sun and you're very comfortable with the top down and a windbreaker.

I drove from Oxford services on the M40 into Hammersmith back in April. It was 4 in the morning but not cold at all. I had my hat on and coat, heater on and roof down - just to see what it was like. I didn't go above 70 and enjoyed every second of it. Totally different experience in the dark.

My roof comes down as soon as I see any blue sky - even on short 5 minute journeys.

Nice to have the choice of roof or no roof

I find it's generally women drivers who never put the roof down... I assume they don't want to ruin their hair!

If sunny mines down from around 12C+ and around 16C+ if it's cloudy. Only time I don't bother if i'm doing a very short journey to the shops or something.

If I have to drive on the freeway (expressway) I will generally put the top up. The wind noise or some big semi truck tire whining in my ear from a foot away is to much. If I'm driving on side roads the top is always down. It's all about choices and I choose which is the most enjoyable at the time. I paid for the top and I'll use it (IMHO) :fuelfire:

Only had the top down about 3-4 times in 14 month's on my last Z, never driven over 60 mph with it down, don't like the buffering :o

hair piece?

Sorry kryton couldn't resist that freebie... as for the top down, just love my commute with the wind in my hair (but usually wear a hat), just wear my ultimate ears and listen to music or an audible without the sound of the heavy motorway traffic constantly whining away.

During the months of June and July I suffer terrible hayfever and could not put my roof down. However, I bought the car for the straight 6, 3.0 litre engine with a 6 speed manual box. I can certainly put my foot down instead!!!

I dont drop the roof on short trips,or when im leaving work and have to go to a couple of shops(dont want to stress the motor)

I just think i can put the roof down when i want to... :D ....not everyone can say that....... :fuelfire:

Modern cars are convertables now not cabrolet's the roof does take up a large space in the boot so not that easy to lower it all the time.

Just another angle on the arguement.

But i do agree with the post and it's mostly women utter waste imo :(

No hair piece, just a lot more hair than some of the young baldies you see nowadays

The roof is for unexpected rain, washing and stopping people from pinching your car park tickets.
Top down heater on if its cold, top down a/c on if its hot....8+ years with convertibles and it's still the first operation I do when I get to the car, I have a 'normal' car for the rain.

It's all about how fast I'll be traveling for me. If I'll be on the freeways going 70+ mph then I'll put the top up. If I'm on surface streets or 2 lane blacktops the top is always down. Above a certain speed having the top down is not very enjoyable. It is a convertible after all and not a topless roadster.

Very rarely have roof up
And I'm in Scotland where it rarely gets above 16C. If it's dry it's down, especially in car myself. Mrs Sham doesn't like it down so much due to hair buffeting (I now keep a cap for her behind seats) so no excuse :D
