Whine/drone THUDDER between 60-70 whilst decelerating *VID*

Hi

So I dont know if this is expected/normal in an ///M but i have noticed the following during my 1st week driving the new car.

Get upto around 60-70 and as soon as you lift your foot from the throttle you then hear like a wining/droming noise from the rear (- i believe).

-it doesnt happen at all speeds, only betwee 60-70 - go below this speed and you cannot reproduce the issue

-if you take her out of gear or brake slightly or do anything else - you still get the sound within those speeds

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same symptom since I bought my Z4M Coupe.
It's a whining noise which I assume that comes from the differential. It happens only within the speed interval you mentioned, regardless of the gear engaged.

I replaced both the gearbox and the differential oils, but it had zero influence: the noise is still there. The good news is that after driving about 20.000 Km, the noise seems to be the same (doesn't get louder, doesn't change behavior).
So I learned to live with it. Turn the music louder and it will bother you less :)

At least you know the fluids are fresh now :thumbsup:

For me - it confirms i am not along with this issue. However it would not be good if it left the factory with this - you cannot call it a "feature!" :)

Wonder who else will contribute to this thread and share their experiences...

What gear are you in when it happens? Does it make the same noise in different gears at that speed?

I havent noticed it in mine.

I believe so yes but will check and update later on

according to my local indy, bmw supply a pack of diff fluid for about 95 quid to deal with this quite common noise, i think it contains ptfe or teflon or similar; good luck :thumbsup:
 
Friction Modified (FM) differential oil - I did some reading about this and never came to a conclusion as to whether its essential or recommended for use in the Z4M.

Mine does the same exact thing. I changed the differential oil but the sound persists. Based on the posts it seems pretty common.
 
Anyone else getting this?

My problem has now got a lot worse - well it sounds very bad anyway.
Come up to see parents today in Derbyshire and after a stop the noise is now terrible.
To describe - go anything above 30 and lift off and there is a thudder comming from the rear - hummm. Under any form of acceleration there is no noise apart from the glorious ///M engine!
Lift off at anything above 30 and the noise gets really loud and actually shakes the rear end and vibrates the insides - accelerate and noise gone.

Any ideas?

I'm quite annoyed TBH as when I originally posted this I took it to the dealer and they said it was tires. I didn't have the energy to battle then so left with the intention of speaking with the tech who worked on the car. That was around three weeks ago and now here I am!

Any thoughts?

Had very similar symptom's on a high mileage C180 estate many years ago (manual) turned out to be the diff :wink:

I had some BMW 'special' oil in my diff at Inspection 2, I was told it will reduce the likely hood of diff noise, I agreed to the change after having the £95 dropped to £50. I hadn't had it long enough to notice the noise but it isn't very loud now. There's a good chance you'll hear the diif as it's not too far from your head in the car and the coupe makes it even worse. My Cobra had roll bars bolted the same part of the chassis as the diff which carried the noise right up behind your head!

Mate - this is beyond an oil problem. There is nothing leaked so it can't be that it's grinding. Plus like I state it only occurs when I lift off - almost like the diff is rubbing the noise starts. Pedal to the metal and no noise

Yep. Doesn't matter what gear or if you brake. Only time the noise stops is of you accelerate even if its just a tap. Almost like the diff or whatever else engages and stops the noise and thudder

BMW warranty to the rescue irrespective :)

Several situations can create ring-and-pinion noise. If the gears have been quiet and begin to howl, they are probably worn or wearing. If the gears howl during deceleration only, it's possible that the pinion-bearing preload has loosened.

Very curious. Thanks for finding that. The noise is almost like you have a flat tire and something is flapping around. Have a video and looking to upload to photobucket and will post.
