Which second key?

Evening all,

I only got one key with my Z when I picked it up, so am looking to get a spare/2nd key. Anyone got any deals? :thumbsup:

Did you by privately or from a dealer? If it was from a dealer I would be getting them to pay for the second key. Two keys are essential. If the transponder fails in the one you've got you cant start the car. I had to buy one from VW for my Golf and it was nearly £200.00

Bit late for that think goose has had the car a little while now.
 
I don't think BMW dealers will sell cars without full set of keys, i.e. 2 master keys with remote control and 1 plastic spare key.

That sounds right, one of the first things they asked me when I was getting a price on my 3 series was.....do you have all the keys?
 
3 keys? I have 2 remote ones - that's all. (Well I actually have 3 remote ones - but one was programmed out).
 
You should have 2 normal keys and one plastic 'valet' key, which doesn't let people driving it into the boot.

The plastic key is an emergency key, they stopped doing the valet key which is a metal key witout the remote side of things.
 
car was bought from and independant dealer, didn't really think about it at the time (think I was more interested in getting out on them there Yorkshire moors!!!)

So all these replacemet keys that I see on websites are no good?!?
 
I only had one key with mine (that was faulty) so paid £100 or £105 from BMW and they had a replacement the next day.

edit- I tried to save a few pennies and bought an uncut key off ebay that looked identical to mine, when it came it was the worst copy of a key you have ever seen, the buttons didnt work properly and it was just a crude copy. I threw it away the same day.

The original BMW keys for sale on ebay cannot be re-reprogrammed to another car, and are only good to transplant the case/buttons of you have damaged your existing one.

I have 2 remote keys too :?

When i bought my old Ford from a dealer i only got 1!
 
You will find scrap key on Ebay and replicas can be part used as said for the casings or even the micro switches inside.
They can generally be coded to open the doors in the standard 'blip' way, but can never be coded or made to start the engine as the transponder is paired.
Cutting grooves is also a specialist job if you wanted to do that.

Furhter there is a lifetime supply of keys at BMW for the car. 5 or 7 IIRC. Once gone then it's a full lock change on the car

Wow, £200 - they saw you coming.

My replacement key for the TT was only £130, i think the BMW ones are a bit cheaper.
 
My third key was tucked away in a small pocket within the booklet folder if thats of any help to people. Its a lot smaller than the remote key so could easily be hidden!
 
I bought mine from a Nissan dealership... Only 1 key still to this day. He said he "tried" to see what he could do about getting me another one... my arse.

BMW quoted $180 for another key... f that... I'll wait for something to break.
