Where is my z4m coupe built

Not really, they have had RMS issues for years that Porsche will do little about despite it being a known issue.

My Z4 used to creak and rattle a lot, my SLK is a bit better, but still far from perfect. Had 2 MX-5s and they were the same. Roadster = rattles.

Been away working for a few days and was amazed to see the longest/most replied to post for ages was on such a pointlessly ridiculous subject. Who cares where the cars are made? The car makers have business models that allow for the same products to be manufactured anywhere they choose. These are not handmade so craftsmanship doesn't really come into it and quality is the same no matter where they construct.

As for thinking the Germans would build them better, that's laughable and obviously an opinion created by their reputation of old. The older Merc, Beemers and Porsches where great but those days are long gone. Germany suffers from lack of inward investment in manufacturing (like most of western europe) and has rising unemployment and social issues. The quality idea is one created by ad men for selling you their German products. I go there often and it's so like Britain it's crazy. Just a different language and less of a superiority complex.

One last thing, i don't see any reason at all for mentioning the Halocaust on a forum about cars. There's no circumstance in my imagination that would ever have written such a thing and i believe that 99% of the people who post here would agree that they too would never mention such a thing in this context.

For that reason I believe that Dragonsbreath should be removed and banned as i for one, do not want to be associated in any way with people of such ignorance.

Elvis has already left the building

IMO it would be appropriate to show his status as banned then. I agree that I would not want to have the appearance that his behaviour was condoned on the forum.

Just a thought.

Cheers, Al

Thanks for the post outrun. I originaly posted it and well done to say its pointless, look at the previous posts and work out why i want to know where may cars made. As for British having a superiority complex compared to the Germans i recomend you go back to where you've been working away from, Its allways bl**dy greener hey!

Totally agree with the above messages that ant-US any kind of holocaust statements have no place in a car forum. Guy was obviously just trying to stir things up in a troll like manner.

This is a fantastic forum and I'm very glad I discovered it on the internet.

People have been really helpful here on lot's of M issues and I now know where my car was built which is even better :D

Wow! I skipped reading this thread (for obvious reasons) a few days ago. I just couldn't take some of the rhetoric. I assumed by now someone would have suggested what I thought could be the reason for the MADE IN GERMANY label. Maybe the LABEL was made in Germany! Look at the printing... it is a little different than the rest of the sticker. I haven't looked at mine but I imagine this could be the answer. Call me crazy. :D

Mine doesn't have the made in Germany made in Germany label?

Further to my previous posts, the net is full of bollocks on decoding VINS - loads of conflicting explanations! I Googled this because it would be nice to have definitive proof. Nearly everything I have read swears blind

A) A VIN beginning with a W means built in Germany
My previous VWs and BMWs have all had VINs beggining with W so that fits...but my Z4M VIN begins with a W, so can't be true

B) X5s and Z4s start 4U or 5U regardless of country of destination because they are built in Spartanburg, not Germany
False...my US built BMW is WBS

HOWEVER I also read somewhere that

C) WBS is the WMI for BMW M Division
That fits - my Z4 is WBS, and my old E46 M3 was also WBS

D) The image below shows where the factory code REALLY is
My Z4 has an L there and surprise surprise, L = Spartanburg

SO the first three letters could be any number of things, but the second theory fits! Built in the USA.

[/thread]!!!

Looks like VIN/WMI are a bit of voodoo. As best as I can figure, the M division got the WBS designator when the whole VIN thing got started. At that time, all Ms WERE made in Germany. It gets fuzzy as soon as BMW expanded just where they were building these vehicles as well as expanding past the usual M3s and M5s. According to one post I read, they're about to run out of VIN numbers and are thinking of taking numbers from countries that don't actually make cars. The US used to have just the number 1, now it has 1, 4, 5.

Mikedev, thanks, that's the clearest I've seen yet!!!

I think you are bang on, WMIs all made sense before mass globalisation, i.e a BMW was going to be built in Germany and a Saab in Sweden. So all German makes got given codes starting with a W, meaning W did mean built in Germany. Now they all build cars everywhere it confuses things...

Oh, and looking at rabman's VIN, 5U is definitely the gold ole USA and he has an L where the Spartanburg designator is.
