Where is my z4m coupe built

Thanks Scotia Steve at least thats one more person who got a MADE IN GERMANY on the Vin plate. For some reason people have been saying what does it mater if its made in US Or timbuktoo just drive it etc. Well my original post was quite simple. Where is the car I PAID LOTS OF MONEY FOR MADE!! I must be old fashioned but when it says MADE IN GERMANY on the "wheres the car made in the world sticker" i tend to believe it and not think its really for where the wheel nuts are made?

Made in Germany on mine too...

Not fairing too badly. Just greased the bonnet latches and suspension tops today to keep any corrosion at bay...

'fraid not fellah. - Every Z3/Z4 (including ///M models) were built at the Spartenburg facility in Carolina since 2003. Great cars but the build quality has been consistently poor. I've had 2 x Z3's & 2 x Z4's since 1997. In general they have been good cars, but in specific terms the interiors have been assembled on crack cocaine. Screws missing on interior trim & nothing but rattles & sqeaks.

If BMW sell £39,000 335's in the UK to that standard in 2009 they deserve to go bust.

My late 2006 Z4M Roadster is a great drivers car, but I have never had a BMW that has such a sqeaking & rattling problem since my first 1996 LHD Z3 1.8. If BMW can't get the quality control right then they thoroughly deserve to lose sales to our <DELETED>.

[Edit : Sp3ctre]- I have edited this post. Further profanity like that will result in a ban.

Thank You Sp3ctre. You can ban me this instant. You are probably the sort of person who expects & wishes for your "Gung Ho" US Marines to be supported by the likes of me & my son in the US Crusade's on "The War on Terror" - which seems to have gone horribly wrong.

Back on topic, BMW have made a dire mistake, as have the VAG group by farming out prduction to 3rd world countries such as the USA, Brazil, Slovakia etc. to cut costs. The factory workers in these countries (especially the USA) don't like to be told what to do.

Obama has a hell of a problem if the US Unions continue to be obstructive. But, HEY, who cares in the Western World. - Our Muslim & Hindu "friends" have been trying to do this for decades.... :headbang: Bye & see you all in the next life (with 24 Virgins each) :D
Enfield?

I know with my old Boxster, most were made in Finland but some were made in Stuttgart. Maybe it's the same with these ones?

No - all made in SC plant - period the end. Mine has a Canadian import stamp - not made anywhere?

It seems unlikely Steve, and with the way sales went latterly then the factory at Spartanburg would have been under capacity if anything, so I can't see why they would assemble some cars elsewhere.

Maybe the press cars were assembled in Germany?

Ah then no real answer to it - although we do know with certainty that all cars were assembled at Spartanburg, so it's just the sticker that is the anomaly.

Talked to my friend that **works at the SC plant** and did final assembly on the engines/drivetrains (these WERE made in Germany) and absolutely, positively 100% sure that ALL Z3s and Z4s were made in Spartanburg, SC. Period.

The closest thing I can find is the manufacturer's tag for the VIN. It's going to say BMW (in German) as that's corporate headquarters. Then you just interpret the VIN as here:

1st digit, country of manufacture: 4 or 5 = USA
2nd digit, make: B= Germany, U=USA
3rd digit, type

and so on

Or you can just look at your original window sticker and it says, Engine: Germany, Transmission: Germany, Final Assembly: Spartanburg, USA

(guess now is a good time for a quote from Plato: "...the uneducated, when they engage in argument about anything, give not thought to the truth about the subject of discussion but are only eager that those present will accept the position they have set forth." from the Phaedo.)

I assume you mean this? Those are a great idea but we don't get them (i.e. there is no standardised format).

There is conflicting info on VINs on the net. Some say its just the WMI (World Manufacturer Indicator) applied to the make. Others say the 1st character corresponds to the actual country, and the 2nd the brand. We have WBS on ours, and using the first rule that comes out as being 'BMW M'. Using the second, W = Germany and B = BMW.

All info on the net suggests the cars are built in SC using an engine from Garchang Germany. So if the first rule is true, the VIN is correct. If it's the second, it's wrong...and I am sure the 2nd is one I've heard before when VW owners were working out where the Golfs / Boras were made (I discovered my Bora V6 4Mo years ago was built in Bratislava for example).

Like every Z3 & Z4 ever built, your car was built in South Carolina USA by incompentent Americans, employed at extortionate employment wages.

That has now finished. BMW Germany has realised that they  cocked-up. So many hundreds of staff will now be laid off. Production will now be transferred to Eastern European Plants that both VW & BMW/Porsche kept open in Bosnia (Sarajevo) during the 1993-1995 war. I know, because I looked after the VW Sarajevo plant.

The Germans are not stupid. They know that they can pay ridiculous amounts of wages. They actually paid absoslutely nothing to the Jews & slaughtered them in 1939+

The Germans will be alright - the British, under Gordon Brown (the Scottish) will be in the poo.

If not for us incompetent Americans; You would be driving a Yugo and eating sour kraut. My family and my wife's family had relatives sacrifice their lives fighting in Europe during World War II, so that we have the freedom today to enjoy these invigorating cars. By the way Bosnia would most likely be a different place without incompetent American help.

We need to enjoy the car no matter where it was built. In my early years I owned a MGB and also a TR6, I loved them both. I took a lot of heat from all my buddies driving Camaros and Mustangs, however I just love Roadsters. I did not care that their quality was below par, I did not care that they were made in Great Britain. I do not know you but I take offense at your comments directed at my fellow countrymen. Americans are hard working people; just like Brits, French, Germans and most other nationalities.

This is not meant to be a slam on you or anyone else or another nationality. It is to the contrary, I think that we all realize that if we relish our freedom we must stick together.

Interesting. No wonder the questions.... the original window sticker isn't exactly standardized across manufacturers, but the information must be included, country of origin, fuel mileage according to the EPA, what is typical for this kind of car, etc. For the M, it also includes a $1000 "gas guzzler" tax, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Our dealers show you a sheet breaking down the price and there is another one that is standardised showing C02 data but that's it...

Yeah we also have to pay £440 a year in tax for something like a Z4M...

Emdinva,

I agree with some of your comments regarding dragonsbreath, he comes across as rude , but please save the “we saved your ass” speech that every America seems to trot out when any one disagrees with how great America is. The fact is, the US came to the party very late in WW2 and only then because the Japs opened a massive can of wup ass on pearl Harbour. Germany was pounded by the allied forces and never showed any signs of landing on british soil, the RAF beat them over the channel in the skies too, long before the US came to the party. From then on the US in evolvement in world affairs has been one balls up after another, the current endeavour isn’t exactly going well.

For the record I’d rather have my car built in Germany, but mine is very well built with no noise or rattles anyway, which is surprising because the ride is so firm, on any other car it would have shaken itself to death by now, so you lot must be doing something right. :)

Dragonsbreath is not stupid. Everything he says is 100% correct. Not a single Z3 or Z4 was ever assembled outside the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Yes, the engines/gearboxes/differentials were built in Western Europe (Not necessarily Germany - several other Eastern European countries also produce the mechanicals - notably Slovania, Hungary & Slovakia - because the labour force is cheap). Then the drivetrain is mated to a US stamped body (of far sub-standard quality to Western European standards) then marketed as "Built in Germany". What a con! It is only a matter of time before BMW - & all other mnufacturers - start building their products in China or South Korea. Why pay Western wages of some £80 a day when you can pay just £1.20?

I don't get where the US stamped body is of "far sub-standard quality" when the machines come from BMW? Matter of fact, they removed the Z4 machinery from the SC factory and sent it to Germany to run the new Z4 line. I also don't get where people are surprised by occasional rattles and creaks in a very stiff, very tightly sprung roadster. They've obviously never driven or ridden in older roadsters from *any* country.

Blimey, I owned 3 BMW MINI's and the all but the last one rattled and they were assembled in the UK. Actually the first MINI Cooper I owned when they first came out I sent back after 7 months and MINI built me a new one at no cost because it was that bad! Bit's falling off all over the place. It was design faults that they later rectified not assembly faults!
I am pleased with the quality of my Z4 and so far I have no rattles! If it was bolted together in the USA then so far they have done a good job!
