Wheel refurbishment and painting

I've decided the only thing letting the look of my E89 down, is the condition of the alloys.

From a distance they look okay, but up close the centre caps are a bit scabby and there's corrosion on the "spokes".

There's a few refurbishing companies near me in Torquay so will let them have a look to see what they can do and the cost. I'm thinking of changing the finish colour as the standard silver finish is a bit "common" and was thinking of a more matt silver/grey finish. Anyone done this or can recommend a company close to me? And what sort of cost am I looking at for drive in, drive out service?
 
Last time i got my wheels refinished by powder coat they cost me £250 or so, not really a drive in/out service as they had them for a few days.

Fresh set of centre caps are around £10 on Fleabay. Indistinguishable from the OEM ones at £40.

Yep defo a 2 prob more like 3 day job to get them sorted, had the 1 series done a few montshback and car was gone 3 days :thumbsup:
 
Has anyone done theirs in a different colour to standard and if so could you post a pic please?

I'm happy to leave the car indefinitely so they'd need to remove the wheels, tyres and refit after the job.
 
Ming, you haven’t mentioned what style of wheel, or is there only one standard type for E89?

Sorry, my mistake - that's what happens when you post after a glass or two of vino 😳

I think it's the infamous 326's - the ones that habitually crack? I had them checked for that when the new tyres were fitted 500 miles ago and they were fine. I'll try to get a picture up later. Car is in Valencia Orange if it helps picture what colour would go well with that. And I know it's entirely subjective which is why I'm looking for inspiration!

I am gonna have my 326's done. I will probably stick with the stock colour as my car mineral grey. Looks like £250 is the ball park. Do you think that is about right?

I'm near Exeter too, and have used South West Wheel Repairs, Matford on a previous car - only downside is leaving the car there and getting back to where you need to be! I was very impressed with their service. Like you I have a VO E89 and need them refurbing but I bought a spare set of wheels in a darker colour at a very good price. On my 35is there's a lot of "light silver" parts, and the darker wheels dont seem to look so nice - and whilst some have gone with black 437 and then darkened the indicators etc, I'm not overly convinced - I like "common" :D . So when mine get refurbed I am going to be staying with the original colour.
 
TB’s VO looks very well with ferric grey. Would be the colour I’d go for if refurbing

I’ve used this company https://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/locations/ left the car with them at 8am picked her up at 5pm superb service and results :thumbsup:

Unfortunately the nearest place is 90 minutes away from me so I'll stick to one a bit nearer

Thanks for the link. I do think that kind of grey does suit the VO cars. I may well ask about that
 
I just got a quote from a place in Norwich for £336. That is keeping the wheels the same colour.
 
Yep, £65-£75 (plus VAT) a wheel seems to be the average and most will spray them whatever colour you want for that.

If it's any help the 326M wheels factory paint code is B20 (Decor silver II).

I'm going to have a go at doing mine myself with a file, many grades of sandpaper, a kit which Halfrauds sell, some of the B20 mixed paint and some clear gloss lacquer. If I cock it up I will send them to the nearest refurbers. :o

The wheels in the link are not 326Ms, though. They are 437s (I know BMW do like to confuse everything) from the M4 and have diamond cut faces. I am pretty sure you can't diamond cut the faces on the 326s as they are moulded and made of much cheaper materials (I think the 437s are forged). I may be wrong (it has been known) :oops:
 
Yeah, I figured they were different wheels as I could make out the diamond cut faces.
It's the grey colour of the rims I'm interested in.

Why not get your refurbers to spray one and see what you think before committing?
 
I’ve just had mine done in Graphite, they were machined faced originally, paid £72 per wheel

I tried this with the B20 and the paint just looks too dark.
