I've just been driving a 991.2 C2S PDK. I was thinking about changing, but actually still prefer the Zed.
So it'll stay for a while. Getting itchy feet though!
Interesting, so what exactly do you prefer in the Z...? I'd have thought the 991.2 C2S would trounce the Z in almost every conceivable benchmark?! *Also are the turbos noticeable (do the detract) in this new gen 911...?
+1
I thought the same but couldn't be bothered to reply earlier.. apparently now i can.
Sure. it's a great car, better in pretty much every conceivable benchmark than the zed, don't get me wrong.
But, the 991 and even more so with the new 3ltr turbo versions, for me, are much more GT orientated. Bigger, less involving and less agile than 997s and earlier, and also the zed. More day to day usable, certainly.
Whilst the EPAS is an improvement, it still has close to zero feel in comparison. It is accurate and well-weighted, but compared to the wonderful steering of 911s in the past, disappointing. Mine had the sports exhaust fitted which sounded good. Certainly not as pure or evocative as the S54 or earlier 911 engines though.
Also the PDK is still frustrating for me. You need a GT3 to get a proper manual mode, as it'll still kickdown way to easily when you use the paddles. Using the paddles in any of the auto modes is pointless, it'll take control pretty quickly, even when your gear selection is perfectly viable. Maybe a manual would be better, but it's not recommended for resale and the 7 speed in the 991 I drove wasn't great.
The 420ps turbo motor has been engineered to feel like an NA unit. Fine in principle and it's enjoyable to rev out to the 7.5k limiter. But they have also removed a lot of low-down punch. Unlike an M4, you have wonderful traction in any 911 which could be exploited further. I guess they have to leave room for the Turbo / GTS versions. The initial response is definitely softer too.
It really depends on your expectations I guess. I also drive a 2013 C63 which I massively prefer as a GT. Truly one of the all time great engines and every drive is memorable. As a sports car, I'll take the involvement and challenge of a Z4 and leave all the electronic gimmickry and toys behind.
A 997 GT3 comes pretty close to perfection, but for me, is totally impractical, even with the front lift kit.
