whats the quietest tyres you have used??

After my recent experience with some incredibly noisy tyres on my e89 that I had to swap out, I'm looking into 19s now and its now obvious to me that tyre noise in the cabin(or lack of to be precise) is at the top of my list of importance. I know they all have ratings now but those ratings are drive by and don't correlate to what you might hear in the cabin.

So I'm after your real world opinions of tyres that actually are really quiet in the cabin..so far in my experience Goodyear F1 are out, Michelin ps4 while better are still not quite as quiet as I would like..so..any other options??

Michelin PS4 S are the quietest I've had on the car. Going to 19" wheels is a mistake if you value comfort and noise though.

The E89 does have a lot of cabin noise compared to other vehicles, probably because of the seating being right over the rear axle.

With you on the F1’s....damn they’re noisy boots....

I still prefer Michelin over anything else, perhaps not the quietest, certainly quieter than Goodyear’s, but still the best tyre overall imho.

I get that with size but thats why I'm particularly trying to find a balance, I like and want 19s on the car and I appreciate they will carry a cost in terms of noise but if i can balance that out a bit by finding the quietest tyre then I've at least tried ..Michelin ps4 whilst a big improvement on the Goodyears I still think are not what you could describe as a quiet tyre

I can't say I have ever even once noticed the tyre noise driving a Z4. A valid question if you do motorway miles with the roof up I guess, but not what sports cars are really about. :driving:

to be honest in the e85 I didn't either, the e89 seems to transmit a lot more noise in the cabin though unfortunately

The PS4 and PS4S are quite different tyres. It's hard to compare directly as I don't think they come in overlapping sizes but the PS4S is a high performance tyre whereas the PS4 is sold as a more run of the mill tyre.

Dunlop Sport Maxx Rt/Rt2
& Pirelli Pz4 stand out for me in terms of road noise into cabin on Z4s.
Michelin PS4S may be grippy but man alive they are without question the loudest tyre I've come across.
Bought 35is with almost brand new ones fitted, driving the car home roof down once over 45-50mph it became noticeable & over 65-70 intolerable roof up or down. Sold them, fitted pirelli & virtual silence by comparison.
Was it just a Z thing? Nope , bought 997C4 again came with almost new PS4S (19s) & same story., sold them for Vred Vorti, problem solved.

Dunlops is where my thinking is at right now especially because as well as the low drive by db the noise suppression technology they are employing seems to have good feedback

If the dB rating (at present mandatory on new tyres in the UK under EU law) is a guide*, then some Dunlops and Pirellis score well.

My experience is that 18" Pirelli P Zeros are acceptable, roof up or down*.

*The rating is of external noise.

Fitted Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 to my Zed and my Audi daily and agree they produce very little noise compared to the Bridgestone and Continental tyres they replaced - very happy with grip and overall handling in all conditions too.

New wheels and a set of Dunlops Sports Maxx RT2 on order :D

Let us know how you get on Steve....I’m wanting rid of these F1’s for noise and frankly, crap handling. It’ll take a lot to tear me away from Michelin’s but always up for someone else’s experience. :driving:

Will do mate.. ever tried the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti's? best grip wet or dry I've ever experienced, for me they pip the Michelins if for no other reason they are their equals in all but price, there may be a bit of compromise with the Dunlops but I'll take a bit more ride comfort over a second or 2 a lap when it'll never see a track :D

No the Vredestein is one boot I’ve never tried tbh, I do need an all round tyre as this 35i is a winter car predominantly and will remain so.

And I thought the Goodyear F1 were Ok, certainly way quieter than the Bridgestone runflats I replaced them with. But then again mine are the Asy 3 and not the Asy 5 which has a higher noise rating.

A square slab of concrete bolted the hubs is quieter than the run flats Silver....

If you like Vred Vorti i can't see you being disappointed with the RT2 in any department , i found them a better tyre all round in fact right now if you were buying a premium tyre that ticked every box over a rival these are the one to have .
I never consider wear rate as i rarely have a set of wheels/tyres over 2k-4k  so its down to these factors listed in no particular order
price
comfort
dry grip
wet grip
noise

I have Eagle F1’s on my E86c and I don’t really rate them, grip and noise average at best.
My E90 330d I put a set of Dunlop sport maxx RT2’s on and they are quiet with plenty of grip. I will also add the rears have done over 36,000 miles and are just about ready to replace. The fronts have 4mm left. Mostly motorway miles I might add but they are very good tyres all-round.

Tricky topic really, a set of boots is a lot of cash to throw at someone else’s opinion, one man’s rubbish etc.... It’s why I wouldn’t fit anything else than Michelin’s, I’ve had lots of sets and never once had any complaint, they suit me to a T. Best to try something before you commit but much much easier said than done admittedly.
