Before anyone get on their high horse and starts screaming.. READ MY QUESTION.


Based on facts alone, what is the difference between the Z4M and the new Z4 sDrive35i?
I am not talking about 'The Driving Experience' between the two. EVERYONE'S experience will be different....
Just pure hard facts....

The ///M has a 330HP motor that develops 262ft-lbs of torque.
The sDrive35i has 300HP and 300ft-lbs of torque.

The ///M does 0-60 in 4.9secs
The sDrive35i does it in 4.8 sec.... (Car & Drivers numbers)

Is the sDrive35i a quicker car???
Is the sDrive35i a faster car?

Is the sDrive35i a better car???
 
Its a new car - things improve. So yes, most likely a "better car" engineering wise. However it is up to each to decide. As I understand the M is a rougher car and the new platform more refined (read that it would fit the "average" Z4 driver better - meaning middle aged men liking to cruise........).

For me - a sports car shall be noisy and "raw" so until further info is available that tells me different - I personally would prefer the M. :thumbsup:
 
No limited slip on the sdrive model and standard comes with run flats.
 
To me the torque means the most of those stats!

I noticed the lack of torque between my M and the 911 I had before it.

But the M has a much larger power band and to me that's what makes the most difference.

since I haven't driven the E89 I can't really compare the two but based on everything I've read, I'll be keeping my M

I drove a 335i and I love that twin turbo engine. I think the sDrive35i may be as fast or quick 0-60 and I have no doubt it is a very good car. I think the answer to the first question is there are many differences including brakes, steering & suspension.

Is it better? That is totally subjective. For some it will be, others no. Definitely more comfortable, but not as sporting.

I don't like a lot about the sdrive35i, especially the name sdrive35i, but I could see myself in the 135i with the same engine. IMHO, it's the closest thing to a BMW 2002 EVER. :thumbsup:
 
Noticed the original poster mentioned 0-60, that really means little. We`d need to see a full set of performance stats to get the overall picture.
The new Z4 is a lot heavier. I think the cars are now like chalk and cheese. Anyone who drives a new Z4 35 who prefers it over the old Z4 M that they own probably bought the wrong car to start with (should of got an SLK). All in my opinion of course. Should a new Z4 M be created it might be a different story.
Even if the performance is close, I`d bet good money on the old Z4 M Coupe especially wiping the floor with the new roaster around a track
 
Well surely that is a matter of opinion then rather than a statistic/paper fact?

Bit of a rubbish thread IMO.

I'd imagine both cars have their merits and the 'best' one depends on what you want from a car.
 
Honey, you gotta tuschi test them for yourself. Me? I like the raw feeling of our "old" Zs so would go for the M. OTOH, new car, warranty, 4/50K service. Only you can decide if you like refined or raw.
 
I dont know where u got the facts from shipkiller. I was under the impression the facts are

0-60 time on sdrive 35i is 5.2s
0-60 time on //M is 5.0s

sdrive35i power 306bhp
//MR power 342 bhp.

Max torque (Nm): 400 on sdrive35i
Max torque (Nm): 350 on //MR

Based on this I feel the M is a much faster car. Dont forget the weight difference

I thought the M weighed in at a portly 1500kg due to the S54 engine, M differential, dual exhaust and some other gubbins.. I'm suprised they needed an iron engine block for strength.

The Sdrive 35 is ~ 1600kg so it doesn't seem a lot difference in it.
 
I should ask the next question. Who would trade their M to the new sdrive35i if the pricing werent too dissimilar(more or less same price-hypothetical of course)

Not a lot of difference? Over 100kg is a substantial difference and a big step in the wrong direction. Anyway many are missing the point. Any M car is much more than acceleration figures, the chassis and suspension are set up to perform to a much higher level than on a standard car and when you push them to anywhere near their limits you realise what the M Divisions input has been. These 2 cars aren't going to be comparable and weren't meant to be. Z4 sales were obviously disappointing to BMW and they seem to have pitched the new car at a different market in an attempt to steal some market share from Mercedes. That doesn't make the new car bad, just different in it's concept.

Looking at the current new model line up I think that anyone who wants to swap their M for the Sdrive 35 probably bought the wrong car in the first place.
