What's the book value of a 150k mile Z4MC...

When I finally picked up the courtesy car about a month ago, the bodyshop told me that the bodywork was almost finished and that they were surprised how easy everything came off & went back on
In other words, they'd never had the panels off one of these before?
Probably, and it makes me wonder if a lot of our cars are written off due to a misunderstanding of how easy/cheap panel replacement can be.

Got an email from the insurer to say they're still investigating my complaint, but it's taking longer than expected due to the complexities of the matter.

So almost 3 months after the incident & they haven't even started the fix :?

the courtesy car alone must be a big factor in the repair cost, you'd think they'd crack on straight away to try ad save the cost

Don't think it's a huge factor, as it's a basic, entry-level 1.0l Vauxhall Viva. Admittedly a brand new one. But I was previously hiring a mid-level (1.6-2.0l TDI Seat Leon, Citroen DS3, Vauxhall Astra, Hyundai I30) hire car for about £100/week.

The courtesy car is on my insurance and is about a £9k car new - but I assume it will be VAT-free and offset again their profits (if not charged back totally to the insurance).

3 months of courtesy car use 'should' cost them less than £1000 - and of course, I've only actually had one for the last month as it took 2 months to sort that out.

I would of insisted on a 3.0ltr 2 seater sports car

I agree with this 100%. I think if you buy the right cat z4 you can get a real bargain with minor damage.

Sorry to hear all your woes. It must be getting frustrating. I shall cross my fingers for good news Tony

It's a 'fault' claim though, so this is all out of my own policy.

I could have gone through an accident management company, but have had a poor experience in the past where it took 2 years to get my excess back on a non-fault claim - mainly due to the damage being less than £2k and the hire car being £7k.

Was told that if I wasn't helpful in the court case, I may be held liable for any losses they make.

Didn't fancy risking it this time, especially when the insurer/bodyshop said I'd have a courtesy car dropped off when mine was picked up.

Unfortunately it didn't happen - and hence the 6-week wait.

Just got the call...the car is ready for handover.

:dance2:

Pity I can't view it today as I'm still working - and the bodyshop isn't open tomorrow :headbang:

Whoa....

That all happened at once..

Check everything a dozen times and drive it around for 20 mins before handover...

Good news Tony and good to hear - hope everything is as expected.

(Is it a bit like a new kitchen - you'll need to allow some fettling time and negotiation to get it back just the way you want it?)

All the best with it.

Great news Tony. Who are you getting to look it over?
Initially I can't get anyone to look over it, as my specialist's move from Essex to Cornwall isn't complete, but I've been promised a pack containing details of everything that's been done, including alignment & suspension settings.

I did spy it in the jet wash when I was sorting out an oil change for the Alfa (at a garage over the road), but did give the valeter a shock when I asked him to please warm the car up before revving the nuts off it :(

Also spotted a wheel & tyre in the boot - so I assume that's been replaced with a new one - I did mention I was planning on getting a new set anyway, so maybe it was too damaged to be able to do the suspension.

Will hopefully find out tomorrow, as I've been told I can 'have a look' tomorrow, but can't speak to anyone from the bodyshop. Will just have to check panel gaps, and that the door/boot opens smoothly - and that there's no water in the electrics as I saw the valeter with a jet lance whilst all the doors/boot were open.

But, as I've got a runaround, I'm in no rush to pay my excess and drive it away.

Still. Great news and another step to getting it back in the right hands. Bet you can't wait to go for a drive :driving: :D

Just taxed it, so I'm ready to go - assuming there's no more snow overnight!

Hope it's okay for you down there with the snow. I am going boarding on Monday! Take some pics and enjoy the drive but as you have said try and be observant although may be hard as like getting a new car again! :D

Good news. If anything is incorrect, at least you will be in full control of all the correctional work. And as you say, your in no rush now to get it back after this long and can keep the miles piling on the hire car!

Look forward to the updates

Got it back and noticed a couple of things straight away, but couldn't speak to anyone about them today.

Also had to move the car off the site as they've got building work going on and couldn't guarantee I'd be able to get it back over the next week if I didn't move it today.

I've been sent a customer feedback survey to complete, but I'll wait to see how the snags below are handled before I decide what to say.

I've put the scans of the assessment/estimate/alignment at the bottom of this post as thumbnails, but the issues I've found over the 30 miles I've just driven and couple of hours it's been at home are:
  • 1st/2nd gears very stiff/notchy – considering new clutch & flywheel were replaced not long ago - and mine NEVER had the 1st/2nd gear issues that so many other Z4Ms see to have
  • Engine management light is on - haven't plugged it in to see what it is yet, but I shouldn't need to, and will leave it for them to investigate
  • Rotational/speed-relative noise from rear - can't hear it when on any throttle due to the exhaust & intake, but on coast-down or when feathering the throttle you can hear a faint, steady 'thrum'
  • Incorrect/non-matching OSF tyre (3 are Michelin Pilot SuperSport, 1 is a Michelin Pilot Sport 4)
  • Handbrake more of less ineffective – what was 2 click to fully on is now 5-6 clicks and still not fully on
  • Sill to OSR wing gap/fitting poor – 1cm gap, and clips showing compared to NSR
The other stuff is minor and will not mention it to them:
  • Non-stick, shiny cleaning product all over the door handles, steering wheel & gear knob
  • Rear quarterlight window surround not sitting flush with wing – causing possible water ingress and wind noise
  • Black mastic on inside driver’s window
  • New paint on the 3 panels looks like it's been scrubbed with a brillo pad (so no 'betterment' there then :P
  • Missing one wheel centre (got a brand new set of 4 to go on anyway)
A few of the above are minor, and I could easily live with them, but others should have been spotted during a normal quality check. Also, the fact that they've paid full BMW retail prices for the tyres (£360 for a rear PSS & £240 for a front PS4 :censored: ) gives some indication why lots of cars get written of for small accidents.

Summary (of parts only)
  • 2 new wheels (£335 + £365)
  • 2 new tyres (£365+£240)
  • 2 drive shafts (2 x £437)
  • OS rear trailing arm (£742)
  • NS rear trailing arm (£742)
  • door (£742)
  • OS rear wing (£298)
  • OS front wing (£378)
  • OS sill (£141)
  • hub (£93)
  • wishbone (£173)
  • door window glass (£92)
  • wheel housing (£122)
  • about 20 other bits (£1000)
