What’s it worth?

Looking to get into an M3 soon and will probably SORN this for a rainy day and keep it (or sunny day). However wondering what people would price this at out of interest if I did decide to sell. Unfortunately someone hit me in the side and did damage to the door so they wrote it off as a CAT S. I’ve since replaced the door and car is exactly as it was before the crash.

Car drives like a dream, exactly as it should, no knocks or clunks. Engine is spot on and car sticks like glue round the corners. It’s been run on liqui moli 5w40 and has Pirelli P zeros on all 4 corners. After the crash I got the wheels refurbed in BBS gold and machine polished it myself as shown in pictures.

2003 e85 3.0i manual
Black sapphire with black interior
127,000 miles
6 owners including myself
Heated seats
FSH and stacks of receipts
I’ve owned it for 6 years

Maintenance work includes DISA valve replaced, VANOS seals done by RBM, roof motor relocated, electric power steering refurbished by ECU testing, expansion tank replaced, front suspension recently replaced.

Bad bits: cat s, oil leak from the sump gasket (currently being fixed as we speak), roof operation is slow requiring a bit of assistance but it’s not got any worse in my 6 years of ownership. The rear subframe has some surface rust but my mechanic told me it’s not worth replacing.IMG_8134.jpeg

I would say anything cat S and over 100k miles is going to be a tough sell at any price. Rightly or wrongly one or both of those will put off 99% of buyers. You only need one buyer though, and I was surprised that my modified Yeti on a similar mileage sold in just 5 days, to a bloke who didn't care about all the things that would put most people off.

3.0i's currently under £3k on autotrader with lower mileage and no cat S.

Suspect you'll struggle to get £2k, but if it's as you've described then it would be a bargain for someone.

Don't forget that, since it was written off, you'll have had a payout already so whatever you sell it for is double bubble. Technically it's scrap value only plus change - so £500.

Saying that, if it's tidy I imagine it'll go at £2k without much trouble as that's pocket money territory and the wheels and tyres are a grands-worth if there's a lot of tread left. You might get more if you've got photos of the before-and-after damage, can tell a good story and you're not in a hurry.

Id say you might get £2500 for it. I would say gold wheels are a bit marmite... if you did advertise it, you might get more clicks with silver wheels for a more unmodified look.

If someone was in the market for a cheap track car this could be a great buy.

Personally think that will be a tough sell at whatever price. When a non-cat early 3 litre with similar mileage can be had for a few grand, the Cat S is going to kill it. IMO.

Only way to find out is try at around £2k and see what happens.

This is why I wasn’t too fussed about the crash as I got the payout and got to keep a brilliant car afterwards. Definitely won’t take £2k for it as not worth it to me personally so will just keep it forever probably

If the E85 goes the same way as the 3 litre Z3s, you could make a few quid in a few years.

Since they discontinued the Z4s I think they probably will start climbing soon

They won’t. They were discontinued because of low demand. Which is low demand across the category. Perhaps some rare variants, like the M M40i, or 35is.

Generally though, they are aging cars, they made loads, road tax is going up, maintenance issues etc.

But, the important thing is that we love them regardless!

I think this car is worth between £1-2k and thats being generous.

You clearly love it more than that from the way it looks. Keep it and if you don’t get it it for a year, sell it.

All cars go up in value eventually, it's just a question of how many years (or decades) you're willing to wait, and whether the car will survive that long.

To be honest, unless you desperately need the money or don't have enough space, I'd keep it.

Going back a few years ( 5-10 ) id agree but not true any more , the punitive VED capers are something the car world hasn't experienced before & now the sums are already sizeable the year on year increments will see the end of way too many cars that would have found favour as 2nd / weekend cars .
The ZMs will hit £1k yr within years , the Si 3 litres will be in what was ZM territory & E89s won't dodge the bullet either.
Tis a shame for sure :(

£1-2k might be realistic, crazy that in reality this car is mechanically superior and all round better than some newer cars going for over £20k. I guess being such a bargain is the reason I bought it in the first place

I don’t know tbh. On one hand it’s a CAT S, on the other hand it drives like a dream. If I was buying it I’d want it for £1k. Selling it, I’m not even sure I’d take £5k
Well as I'm sure you're now aware, you won't be seeing even 50% of your lowest wish, so best just stash it away for now.

:ROFLMAO: I think you've just summed up 99% of used car purchases. And house purchases. All private purchases of anything really...
