whats happened to my tyres?

I have come to the point of needing to replace my tyres as I have a slow puncture on the back left and the fronts are nearly down to the legal minimum. However on taking a closer look today at the fronts tyres, the insides both have a grove worn into them and have heavy ware on the inside rim. I can’t understand why this has happened, there doesn’t appear to be anything causing this to happen, and I'm not a particularly aggressive driver. The tyres are run flats and are 20 months old having covered 22000 miles. I'm looking to change to non run flats but don’t want the same thing happening again. Anyone encountered this before or knows what is causing it?

do you regularly drive over those speed bumps that are designed so busses can go straight over them? If you drive over them centrally they can cause this kind of wear.

Slightly off-topic, and I know that the run-flats are almost universally hated, BUT.......22,000 miles out your tyres, on a performance car, is pretty impressive ! :o

Bridgestone runflats are renowned for wearing on the inner edge. But your Toe probably needs adjusting. Worth getting it checked to be safe :)

Mine went like that on the E46, but on the rear. Checked all alignment issues and they were spot on. Then started googling the issue

Mine are exactly the same for the rear both on the bridgestones i had on and the toyos... you think wow im doing well here loads left on the tyres 2 years down the line then on inspection of the inner edges you realise what part of the tyre has been doing that 22k I believe they set it like this for cornering grip? But surely that affects straight line braking performance also? :o when I replace my bushings for the powerflex ones all round I will go and have geometry check :-) The tyres I have will pass an MOT but when you take them off and closely inspect the inner edge there is no tread at all infact on one of them there is a very faint white layer showing through... dangerous IMO i discovered this when I put the 17's on ready to refurb the 18's!

First, It is not the fault of the Bridgestone tire to wear on the inside. The reason they do wear on the inside is the additional weight of the roof once you have it in the trunk. So I am told. My rear tires have worn on the inside in the same way. I first noted it after 11,000 Miles.

Second, A wear as shown above I understand after 22,000 miles is quite normal.

The rear tires stand at a 2.5 degree camber that causes the inside wear (more so with the roof down and some luggage n the trunk).

My rear tires in general are still okay as far as the tread is concerned. My BMW service manager recommends to inflate them 10% over specified value that is what I am doing.

As for new tires, I expect the same to happen. I will monitor my tire pressure on a weekly basis this I think will help not to run over or under inflated. When I have new tires they will be non-run-flats and if I go for a long trip and expect the roof being down for long periods then my rear tires will get 4 psi more air.

Thanks for the responses. Thought it was strange as I’ve always worn the outside edge on my fronts in previous cars due to cornering too quickly. I do go over the occasional speed bump the ones that buses can go over without touching them I’m always worried about catching the front spoiler on them. As for the toe what’s that? I’ve now decided to get rid of the RFT and going for Falkens as I want a smoother ride. So what does everyone do about not having a spare? Buy a space saver or get that BMW thing?

Mine are starting to do this and at the Wales run, i noticed CJ10Jeepers had also done this previously. Its partly down to front wishbone rear bush flexing (on its way out). Instead of going and just getting the tracking done, get these bushes replaced or at least checked. How many miles has the car done? 45k+?

The rear tyres should also wear on the inside-centre but that is due to the 2-3degrees of negative camber the car is designed to have :)

Good point about the bushes Ed.

Regarding non RFT's I have a compressor which fits next to the battery and two cans of holts tyre weldwhich both just fit into one BMW oil pack cover so all looks neat and tidy in the boot still.

My car was exactly the same when i traded it in, i didnt even know. I though i had a good 2-3mm tread left.

just to buck the trend we recently replaced the run flats on the rear of our Z and they were worn evenly across the width.

Did you keep them at the right pressures? perhaps check for bush/balljoint or track rod wear

Yeh sounds like it could be the bushes the car has done 40000 miles. The rear tyres are fine even ware across the tyres. Might think of getting some holt and a compressor. Tax due this month too more money :(

Right I've decided to go for Falkens 452's. Now I can get them off the net for £340 delivered, or I could get them fitted and in a package deal for £419. But with the problem I have on my current tyres with the inner side of the tyre waring I dont know what to do. What has everyone else done when they have gone to non run flats. Anyone know of a good tyre fitter around Coventry.

Just get them for £340 and get a tyre fitter to stick them on for you. Most independent ones will stick them on for about ten quid a rim, and thats balanced etc.

£419 package deal? Thats a lot to have them fitted, but the net will always be cheaper to buy them. Up to you, as i dont think £419 is bad at all for four tyres.

Rolf - I'm sorry but this just made me laugh out loud. Stowing 5lb of canvas and a bit of magnesium frame a few inches further back causing the inner edges of tyres to wear out  Overinflating the tyres by 10% All that will do is wear the centre strip out.

If these tyres have lasted over 20k then there's no serious issue. A combimation of worn suspension parts, slight alignment issues and the cars built in camber settings will do this. All I'd do is get the new Falkens on the do a proper alignment set up usign a Hunter equiped shop and all the correct ballast in the car.

If you fancy a run to Lichfield I'm sure I can get them supplied and fitted by a top pro for less than the price you have.
