What will happen to the old Z4 value?

When the new Z4 is released will it deprecite the value of our cars? Should I sell now or as my car is a convertable will it sell for neary the same amount just before summer?

ALl advice welcomed.

Don't say that, I've just bought one!

Personally wouldn't sell now as its winter and the credit crunch - I mean I got mine a couple of weeks ago for under £10k and you can see the spec on my sig and its mint and that was from a dealer with warranty and it got a new service and MOT.

I think it will take a while before our Z's are affected seriously, look at the old TT for instance, they were still selling at fairly high prices until recently and the drop was probably only down to credit crunch and winter anyway.

but what would you buy instead?

remember all cars suffer depreciation, some more than others. If you like your car and get enjoyment from it, I'd keep it (I intend too :))

If you are thinking of selling anyway - summer would be a better time probably...

Do you need to sell your car in the next 6 months, or are you just concerned that the car you're going to keep for another 3 years is going to be worth less in 6 months than it is now?

If you don't want/need to sell, then depreciation isn't an issue - it's not like houses where people have borrowed more than the house is now worth and are in negative equity.

They've taken such a hit over the summer that I'd doubt if they would go down much further in the short term. Winter is a crap time to sell a soft top anyway, April is much better. If you sell now , depending upon when you bought, you'll lose your proverbial shirt, so I'd keep it any enjoy, that's what I'm going to do.

When I went looking initially, and since I purchased one, I was surprised at the depreciation of the Z model. I purchased a 2 yr old model with low miles for 1/2 of sticker. I considered that huge for a BMW. Since I wouldn't buy a new one I'm happy mind you, but surprised. I'd "like" to find a nice '06 or newer, but I can't seem to find a color that turns my head and has the options I want. Until then, I'll keep loving the one I have. Of course it won't be driven much now until spring, so there it sits under its cover in my garage.

You've paid what you thought was a reasonable value and an amount that you were willing to spend to drive the car you do...

If you are planning on keeping it, who cares.

As already said, same with houses.

Good news for those looking to buy and have the cash.

I work on the assumption mine is worth nothing when ive finished with it and any resale is a bonus

Since there is a major body change, change in roof mechanism and substantial price difference - I think no effect on 2003-2008 Z4 value from the new design. I don't think it will pull that many owners away from their present Z4.

I think there will very clear members of the BMW "Z" Family - Z1, Z3, Z8, Z4 and 2009+ Z4. Each one with it's own special style - All with the very familiar BMW "DNA" that we enjoy.

I wish they had given it a different "Z" #! -

Value isn’t important unless you’re planning on selling IMO.

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but I saw 57-plate (under a year old) new-shape 325Ci’s sell at auction for £17.2k last week – that’s not much more than ½ their original list price. It’s just a terrible time to sell ANY car, let alone a convertible in the middle of a (British) winter.

Suits me though, I’m looking to buy one :D

I have a 56 plate Z4 coupe sport, I've noticed on BMW used the prices are still high, so out of interest I got trade in valur of my car against a couple of others, the rices ranged from £13500 to £15800, which is horrific given the amount of car and performance. Apparently, nobody is willing to underwrite this type of car a the moment.

Hopefully, the prices won't continue to tumble otherwise they'll be worthless :?

As said above all cars loose money but thats life and unless you swap your cars every year or so not worth the worry.

When i bought mine nearly a year ago i was very pleased with the price i got a car that cost around 36k when new with all the options for 17.5k

The colour i wanted the spec i wanted the wheels i wanted top that off with M.Seats CD Stacker uprated speakers plus other options and one owner very low mileage 11.5k and in as new and i mean as new condition i was so so pleased.

Have looked at the market since then and the nearest to what i have has been a few K cheaper but 3-4 times the mileage and ones that i have seen in the flesh for even less money have been dogs.

Had i waited to now i could have bought a later model but luckily for me i prefer the pre face lift cars and then there is also the superb year i have had with the car two glorious trips to Le-Mans and Le-Mans Classic which i will not be doing next year.

The other way to look at it is if you are trading in for another Z4 or something else most of the market is down so whatever you buy will be cheaper.

Another thing already said on here is that the new Z4 could attract a different sort of customer as its more refined cruiser and i do not think it would get the compliments my Z4 has had having two very good compliments from AC.Cobra owners on the look of my car is something special in my eyes :D

I do like the look of the new Z4 but it should have been given a different model number (Z6?). It is to me like comparing the Morgan Aero 8 to the original Morgan +8.

I have owned a Morgan +8 and loved that car in the same way I love my Z4 - both are great lookers, great performers and indivudualistic - the BMW is a touch more practical too  . Would I want an Aero 8, would I want the new Zed? Well yes but not in place of the original.

Anyway, I prefer my 05 pre-facelift - quite interesting to read about the design in the book by David Lightfoot "BMW Z4 - design, development and production" which I got off Amazon. Those round rear lights are there for a reason (BMW 2002 inspired) and no doubt replaced at facelift time for a reason (read about the "french fry")

All good fun :driving:

Merry Christmas to all - I'm off to get the turkey in the oven and read more of that book about the Z4

All cars depreciate. Those that are classic in design and engineering (which I think our Z4s are) will eventually hit bottom then start to go back up. Frankly I agree with those that plan on driving the wheels off it and if I ever trade it in and get anything for it, that will be a bonus.

If I was that worried on depreciation I would have kept my JCW MINI. They have hardly lost any more money since I sold mine but my Z4 has since I bought that at the same time!!!

Whateverz... my car is priceless. :P

Memories in the car don't depreciate

So True So True

Went out this morning for a run to the coast just got back gave the Z a quick once over with some QD and she looks stunning :D :D :D

Almost all vehicles depreciate. Some depreciate much faster than others. I lost over 5K per year on my wife’s Cadillac. I think as time goes by it will be harder and harder to find a good rag top and if you have one and keep the roof in great shape, you will have a valuable car in years to come. An example around here is a 1960’s vintage Ford Mustang. They are all valuable but the rag tops get the best price. There are some exceptions to that but just about any convertible from that era will bring you more money than a hardtop will. Any of the Zeds are fun cars and will always have less deprecation than other cars in my opinion. They seem to have a rather fast depreciation and then kind of stabilize. Condition is the key from that point. :)

When I bought my car I put 50% cash down on it.

This ensure's I can easily afford the monthly repayments. These come to about the same as it would cost to contract hire a very average contract hire car, in which I have nothing to show at the end and end up with a car I have no passion for.

So to me aslong as I get my £5k-ish back when I come to sell the car on I will be perfectly happy. Any extra would be a bonus.
