A lot of us seem to have come from the same sorts of car into the Z. Just wondered which was the most common?
I had a GT TDi Golf before the Z.
Pics would be good to see of your old cars as well.
The car immediately prior to my Z4 was a black/black Mazdaspeed6. It was a surprisingly spirited steed for its size and stance, and could throw down when pushed. But compared to a naturally aspirated engine, you really had to concentrate to get the most out of its turbo (on launch).
Prior to the Mazda was an Audi TT roadster... Before that was a black/tan GTi VR6... and before that, my first roadster, a '99 Z3 2.3. The Z3 will go down as my favorite, I think. It was my first "exotic" car (it seemed to me) and I was living in San Diego at the time. Cruising along the SoCal coastline with the top down was an almost spiritual experience.

Last car was an S2000. Great fun for going for blasts in, awesome gearbox, but could get a bit noisy on long journeys due to the revvy engine. Very different to my Z4MR which has been a doddle on the couple of long journeys I've done in it.
Also drive a 1.4 MG ZR as my day to day car for going to work in grotty weather, going to the supermarket etc!
Like I noted, it's all about the timing. My car just before the Z3 was a white Saturn with grey cloth interior... a fine car, but pretty darn vanilla. So to go from GMC to BMW was, at that time in my life, like being "reborn" (in an automotive sense, anyway). I was living in San Diego and had always wanted a convertible, and it was my first straight-6. Add those together and it was like champaign after years of Kool Aid. The Z3 was the first car that made me feel special, too (I had never gotten "thumbs up" before or had more compliments on a car).
Will I have cars I like better? Yes, but "better" and "favorite" mean different things when it comes to memories.
I like my Z4 coupe far better than my Z3 in terms of style, performance, and adjustability. BUT it's not necessarily my favorite because the memory of my first BMW remains more potent.
Likewise, will I like future cars better than my current Z4? Probably, but I will always remember my Z3 with great fondness.
