What Tyres

Fronts & rears are different sizes (or can be). Mine are wider out back / narrower out front which I think is standard on my z4.

Height of the tirewall is different if you shift from 17" to 18" wheels.

If you are buying wheels, get them first. Then get the tires to fit.

If you are going from runflat to normal tires - don't mix. Do them all, or don't bother.

Sounds good are you running 18" wheels if so could you give me the sizes you are running so I have an idea what I will be looking at?

I've tried most of the better known makes and for normal driving styles at all speeds there's not much between any of 'em, not that my 61 year old brain can remember anyway. For my last track day I took off PS4' and replaced with Accelera Sport Extras. They were faultless and in fact they knocked spots off the Michelins in most respects. I never bothered to swap back to PS4' and yesterday I took the Z out in some extreme rain and gave 'em some stick. I backed off before the tyres. Standing water, handling and braking were great. At around £100 / corner the only downside is the name on the side hasn't got the street cred. Unless you are a very good driver with a very fast car on a very good track, don't waste too much money, save that for brakes and suspension. :driving:
Looked at these and they are decent money, are you running 18" wheels if so would you let me know the sizes you have on your car?

E89 294 style alloys

So thats a staggered set of tyres with 8j and 8.5j rim widths..

https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/z4_e89_alloys/18_bmw_294_wheel_1420

For that set up you need 225/40 18 and 255/35 18

The rims are not wide enough to support wider tyres than stock

Given your use is general street use IMHO I'd go for a set of tyres with good all round performance ie not a track focussed tyre

So

GY Assy 5 or 6

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or 5

Bridgestone Potenza Sport

Those are tier 1 suppliers and prices

For a full list of rankings by different categories this is a good steer..

As always a good reply this now gives me the information I need to start my search although the 18" wheels I am looking at do have the run flats on and are legal which will do me for the time being, wheels and tyres may send the wife over the edge lol

No worries..just for info the runflat tyres on are the worst sports tyres tyre reviews have ever tested  :tumbleweed: :driving:

Hi B21

I certainly agree with that but I am afraid the wife wont let me buy different wheels and new tyres, so the new tyres will be brought as the year goes on the car is driven on the odd occasion.

Had the car only 3 weeks and done 35 miles being retired certainly keeps me busy.

These Acceleras are 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 and with 224 wheels I can go a bit wider and taller when bargains appear, as above you must stay within the limits of your wheels. The 224's go to size is 225/45/18 and 255 40/18.

GY Asymmetrics to me seem to be going harder, probably to make them more fuel efficient.(Might be EU thing).
Set i have now 5's i think, don't wear.
Wider grooves than earlier tyres so again probably harder to last longer.
Which to me translates to some instability on country lanes with harder tyre.
I liked the 2's.

Imteresting the GY Assy. 2 had 403 reviews, highest on list, i think, was a great tyre.
Wear rate on the 6 has gone up, perhaps gone back to softer compound.

Wheels now procured and the rears have 2 diffent ratings??
255/35/18 94 Y
255/35/18 90W
Can these be used on the same axle?
Car is mainly used for short journeys and not stupid speeds as you would expect.

Can they? Clearly yes.

Should they? Of course not.

The slower you go, the less of a problem it might be. But any wet greasy corner could be a problem.

Why take a chance?

Tyres should be matched on the same axel.

So your thoughts and advice will be much appreciated.
1 Your choice of 18s on the E89 is excellent. They retain some of the agility of 17s with none of the disadvantages of 19s.

2 Beware of tyre reviews. They're statistical gibberish. (So, for example, how do they differentiate between 92% dry grip and 93%? Actually, they can't and, indeed, they don't. They're just numbers.)

3 For your weekend cruiser, buy a well-known make with (the manufacturer's) low noise rating. It's the only feature you'll notice.

Hi Mattsmith

I thought the answer was no so another question can you mix run flats on the front and a pair of decent none run flat tyres on the rear?

Again I think this is going to be a no. :headbang: :headbang:

I wouldn’t.

Tyres are the only thing that connects the car to the road.

I chose not to mess about with them, even though I’m never going near a racetrack or pushing past 8 tenths at max.

Same brand & type on all corners, avoid runflats as they are so harsh it kills the ride quality.

By definition these tyres have different load and speed ratings…it’s certainly not good practice..on the same axle..obviously front and rear if they are asymmetric sets that’s ok .

I don't know where you have bought them from but is it possible to send them back for a refund?

That would worry me, one gripping mid corner, one possibly not :tumbleweed:
