What Tyres

Hi All

Yet another question on tyres I suspect??

Looking to get a set of 18” alloys to replace the 17” + run flats that are on the car already, so the question is going to be what do you guys/girls recommend?

The car is being used on average once a week (Low Mileage) and I do like at odd time a little bit of dare I say spirited driving nothing stupid (Engine Warmed Up).

So your thoughts and advice will be much appreciated.

Oh the car they will be going on is a 2015 E89 2.0lt.

Thanks

I like the PS4S. There’s talk of a PSS5, or something like that. And you’ll absolutely need a repair kit and a pump. And a roadside assistance programme.

But tyres don’t live in the vacuum. For proper performance, you want to work the suspension as well. See sig below. And all that must match your driving style, otherwise it’s all for nothing. Ask Sir Lewis.

I also went PS4S, and very happy with it.

But you will need to see what's available in your tyre sizes (not all of them are), and what can be bought this week (again not all are available).

And budget too - how much do you wanna spend? The best cost more.

Looking around £120 - £130 per tyre so will do some searching

PS4S do you mean Pilot Sports?

Have a look at the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5 seem to be a good deal at Halfords, I fitted last year and very happy with them.

Reviews have them up with the PS4, the Asymmetric 6 are even better but can’t get hold of them.

PS4S = Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S - high performance sports tyre.

Not Pilot Sport 4 - these are a more upper-mid-range general tyre.

There is a new version of the Pilot Sport 5 (PS5) but again - it is a more upper-mid range tyre, not the high performance sports version.

Doesn't help that people who have more than one PS4 tire fitted refer to them as PS4s!!

Even worse, to me that means Playstation 4.

In 18” wheel sizes the latest UUHP tyres are often not available.

On a 20i with new 18” alloys I’d go for 235/40 18 265/35 18 on 8.5j 9.5j rims with GY Assy 6 as the current top dog in that class.

I’ve not used the Assy 6 but the Assy 5 was a great tyre and suited the E89 very well.

I found the MP4S to be a bit dead feeling and not the best suited compare to either the GY Assy 5 or the Conti SC5 / 6 / 7

Sadly the SC7 is not available in suitable 18” sizes..

PS4S - got an indy dealer friend here who tracks BMW and you will never change his mind about that, hes tried em all.
Only thing better is OE tyres from BMW directly

There are a number of places online that will do alloys and tyre sets and you'll tend to get a great price for both, I've used BMAutosport, Rimstyle and most recently Demon Tweeks. For 18" wheels the standard fitment is
Front, 8j x 18 ET29 with 225/40R18
Rear, 8.5j x 18 ET40 with 255/35R18
Consensus is that you can go down by 5mm on ET and over 5mm added will require spacers to bring them out

You need to decide what type of alloys, rim widths, offsets and whether you go square or assymetric first.. :tumbleweed:

I've tried most of the better known makes and for normal driving styles at all speeds there's not much between any of 'em, not that my 61 year old brain can remember anyway. For my last track day I took off PS4' and replaced with Accelera Sport Extras. They were faultless and in fact they knocked spots off the Michelins in most respects. I never bothered to swap back to PS4' and yesterday I took the Z out in some extreme rain and gave 'em some stick. I backed off before the tyres. Standing water, handling and braking were great. At around £100 / corner the only downside is the name on the side hasn't got the street cred. Unless you are a very good driver with a very fast car on a very good track, don't waste too much money, save that for brakes and suspension. :driving:

Ok will give these a look.

I have fitted at the moment 17" 225/45/17 91w run flats all round would I be looking at the same size albiet the 18" wheels I am looking to purchase?

Or are the fronts and the rears different sizes?
