What to do?

Evening all,

Having a bit of think about my career. Since posting in the 'stupid things you have done' thread it has been on my mind. Although I've been thinking about it for a lot longer than that.

Since leaving uni 3 and a half years ago I have pretty much worked in field sales (FMCG at a couple of different companies).

It's not my passion and it's not something I want to do long term. I'm OK at it but I wouldn't say I'm anything special when it come to sales/account management.

Problem is I'm not sure where else I can go with a Marketing degree and only 'commercial' experience. Ideally I would go back to uni but I couldn't afford a big drop in income at the moment.

Has anyone else been in a similar position or changed careers completely? If so, how did you do it?

I have changed careers a few times ......... its generally the only way to get ahead.
Starting right back at the beginning is only a shock to he system the first time.
Its a bit like getting a divorce .... :) one minute you have everything, the next its all gone .... (done that twice lol)

Don't be scared to stop and changed direction ....... its usually well worth it

Nice to know, thanks.

I know I will regret it if I don't do it soon, it's just how to get started. Probably not the best time with a wedding later this year, but I'm the most impatient person I have ever met!

I assume that you are in your mid 20s?

So potentially you have another 35 years or so of employment to look forward to. That's a long time to be doing something you don't enjoy constantly thinking "What if....."

You are young enough to do it now. Especially if you have no emotional or financial commitments. OK so it's a drop in salary but it's probably for three years only. Three years out of your whole life.

Many people who reach my sort of age (56) wish they'd done something different in their career, but it's too late. Don't be one of them too.

Correct - nearly 25.

And that's summarised my thoughts exactly.

I think I need to create a set plan of action rather than just bouncing thoughts off each other.

Cheers TR4man.

You say 'go back to uni' but to do what? What options are there in that direction?

I did that, after 2 years oil industry in North Africa, loads of dosh, I came back to UK and did a PhD and never looked back. Retired now but very happy with the way things have worked out.

Seize the moment!

I agree with most of the above. I'm lucky in that I like my job even though there's crap bits in all jobs. Make a firm decision having weighed it all up and focus your efforts on it. There are lots of educational establishments that do part time or evening courses. Better to have tried and failed than never to have tried!
