What real world difference is there between engines?

Look, all I'm saying is in the REAL world, 0-60 doesn't mean much. It's the ability to go from 40-80 and my 321Ci was fast enough for that. My Z faster than that.

In the REAL world, drive the car and if you like it, buy it.

Where my previous post came from is all the chest-beating-I-drive-an-//M-and-you-don't-so -you-can't-keep-up bs on here.

Having a rough day???? :)

Go have a drink and a cigar, and let don't let Breaker's //M driver baiting get to you!

I love this post!!!! :D

First, in a world where money is no concern, we'd all own M's!! Why not right??!!?

But let me give some thoughts on the original question...What is the real world difference between engines. This really depends on your version of "real world."

Is real world getting on the highway and setting the cruise control at 70mph? If so, all cars will hold that speed so there would be not difference at all!!!! Alternatively, is your real world on the track and driving 100+mph regularly? Or are you like me? I just like to nail it out of corners and blast up onramps onto the free way as fast as possible. I'm always looking for that power kick when I step on the throttle. That means that when I test drove other cars (3.0si and 135i), I was LOOKING for the difference from my 2.5i. So did I find it? CERTAINLY!! Was it significant? Not so much in the 3.0si, but very in the 135i (300ft/lbs tq).

The point is that I am LOOKING for a difference in my day-to-day, real world driving...so I find it. Afterall, they are there and they are measurable. So to me, this is very significant. But if you're not looking for these difference, they can equally be called insignifant and it's easy to justify overlooking them.

So if you look for something, chances are you'll find it! :)

Real world difference.....did anyone mention gas mileage?
Us 3.0 and other Z4's can go on an all day drive around mountains and do it somewhat spirited too and still have plenty o petrol. The M's though....not so much

We get inspection 2 for free. Regular Z4's rarely do, and when they do it's because they get crappy gas mileage so that in turns makes it moot.

Right back at cha. :poke:

Real world driving I think there's alot of difference.. but it's very little to do with the engines!
All the emphasis for me has to be on the driver, the tyres and the conditions.

In my 2.5 there are very very few situations I have backed out of due to lack of power.. however there have been many after fish tailing down the A1 whilst accellerating and 'drifting' around roundabouts unintentionally due to wet roads and the god aweful tyres that came with my car originally.

On a clear road, sunny day.. no doubt the 3 and //M will win the sprint, but if you really need to get past me... you'll still need to give it some beans ;)

Been looking for a thread like this...

Seeing as i have been trying to decide whether the 3.0 is worth it over the 2.5?

0-60 in the 3 is 5.7, in the 2.5 it is 6.8 now thats a massive difference IMO - but real world would you really notice i.e. if you werent drag racing.

Think Alex 85 you have the nail on the head on this debate. In terms of this debate - there is considerably more "real" world difference between the 2.5 and the 3.0 (and clearly no one can deny) - much less difference between the M and the 3.0 other than an extra £10k and a huge amount more depreciation ( )....

However, this topic really is a lot on nonsense - there is a difference in "any" person's world - that is why people go out and buy the Zonda's, Ferrari's, Porsche and Lambo's of this world as there is a real difference. Trying to blind with science and personal perspective is all a lot of nonsense as reality is what it is. If you truly believe there is no real world difference then instead of spending a fortune on (any kind of) Z4 then go and buy a Ford Focus or something and then you dont have to read about 400 posts of nonsense of my Z4 is better than yours shoite. You really are all living uo to your rep as BMW drivers here!

It's time I joined this thread just to say your all wrong coz the Alpina is by far the best of all!! :exitright:

You know, that's probably the best conclusion yet to this thread! :topicclosed:

I think if you really want to know (about the engines), you should take a look at the power curves of the engines. Everything else being equal, which ever one is steepest in the RPM range you're looking at is going to be fastest. How much faster is difficult to say. Depends on too many things. But, the change in power is nothing more than the slope of the power curve. So if the slope is steeper, you'll increase power faster and accelerate faster.
