Has yours ever been replaced ? Must check the date on mine, as I'm pretty sure at 9 years old the gunk will be past it's prime...

My father-in-law was an agricultural tyre fitter/repairer and he gave me some of those sticky rubber strings and a needle tool a long time ago. You're not meant to use them on road tyres, but I did on my Kia Soul, four times, and it was fine.
