What products do you use on your soft top?

Hi,
Had a good look through the Forum but still looking for some advice/recommendations when it comes to cleaning/restoring the soft top. Our car is a 54 reg with very low mileage (25k) and on its original black soft top. The hood is not in bad condition but its not brilliant either and I want to get it looking a bit better. It does have marks on it - some of it may be fading but I think most of it is greenish stuff. When we bought the car the guy gave us the BMW products - the Soft Top Cleaner and the Soft Top Impregnating Agent. I've had 2 tries with the Soft Top Cleaner - 1st using a soft cloth and then 2nd attempt using a nail brush specifically on the green patches on the hood. Doesn't seem to be making any difference - in fact the other half now thinks it now looks worse! I've seen the equivalent Autoglym products and wonder if they are any better? How hard are you meant to scrub the soft top? The nail brush I am using is pretty soft. I've used Renovo Reviver in the past which would dye it but from experience it does fade and needs keeping up with. Let me know what you've had success with and I will give it a go and post back progress here. Many thanks in advance. :driving:

I havnt used any as of yet but mine is needing a bit of a clean. Wouldn't say the colour has faded to much but am going to use autoglym hood cleaner and protector in next couple of days will let you know how it works.

But what I've seen from previous posts the AG is the most popular/recommended

The autoglym does work but go easy on the cleaner as it foams up and is a devil to rinse away - hood electric motor swimming in water anyone? :(

The proofer on the other hand get's used up quickly - and you can't buy it separately. :x

Let us know how you get on.

(I think it was Ste who had a good regime he used to keep his hood in top condition - might be worth a search or a pm)

:driving:

Hi guys,
Many thanks for the replies. Given what you say I think I will ditch the BMW Soft Top Cleaner - it just doesn't seem to be biting into those greenish patches and I darn't scrub the hood any harder! I wouldn't recommend the stuff but as it came with the car from the previous owner then it doesn't really matter.
I'll get the Autoglym kit and try that. Am away with work for a few days so the Z4 will await my return and then I will have another go once armed with the AG products. Will let you know how I get on and hopefully it will be good news :D :driving:

I use 303 cleaner and fabric guard

Jet wash, brings it up like new, gets into the fibre and removes all the green stuff.

I,m new to the whole "soft top" scene & try to avoid the roof when i,m jetwashing the car ( 330 Ci not Z  )
Is there no chance of blowing water through if going at it directly with the pressure washer ?

Renovo is the best I have found.

I use their fabric hood cleaner and then use the protector. Water still beads on the soft top after a few months. Very good stuff.

You will be fine, approx 4 inch away and you will be amazed at how clean it comes up.
It won't leak through either.

I Autoglymed mine yesterday, and was mindful of the possibility of loads of water getting to the roof motor. I used three dust sheets to a) keep the foam off the bodywork and b) absorb the rinse water, by tucking the sheets down into the gap between the hood and bodywork.

I've got the autoglym kit but rarely use the cleaner, just the protector. After I have the car washed locally and the roof is still damp I spray on the protector.

I saw someone use a steam cleaner on their roof last weekend - just the regular type you'd use at home. Not something i've ever thought of before, not too sure really.

Thread resurrection - which should assist any new folk.

Recently bought the autoglym fabric hood cleaner and directions indicate using half a bottle in one go - as per the first post i'd assume the amount of bubble froth this generates would be ridiculous, anyone use the same? If so how much should be used

I reckon on one kit doing twice. It does foam quite a lot but the hose get it off. AG is the one for me!
