What made you buy a Z4?

Well i do not remember to the day when i decided on a Z4 had liked them when they first came out although not to keen on the front end which looked to soft compared to the very aggressive rear of the car.

I sat in a Silver Z4 roadster on a stand at Brands Hatch i felt really comfy like i was meant to be there but when i was asked by the sales woman if i was interested i said maybe in a few years when they are on the used market not thinking i would ever own one.

I had been looking for a replacement for my Calibra which i had looked after and loved for years as nothing i could afford at the time was a worthy replacement in my eyes.

Looked at buying an S2000 but wanted an auto and really wanted a bigger engine get away from screaming revs so i started looking at Twin Turbo Supras but for what i was going to pay for a car not much newer than my Calibra i could save some more and get the Z4 better looking all round and a much nicer interior and as a good UK Supra would be around 11-12k plus then i would want to change a few things thats when i decided on the Z4 good looks great interior and smooth power to match :D

I sold my Honda Goldwing GL1800 in October and was looking for something to replace tte fun-factor. I started looking at convertables. My wife has had an X3 and X5 and I enjoy the BMW from a drivers perspective. I drove several types of sports cars and found that some great deals could be had on 2-3 year old Z4's. Seems to me that the only way to buy a non-M model is used. I saved about 1/2 off the sticker by buying a 2 year old model rather than a brand new one. After looking at Boxter, S2000, 350Z and Miata, I found a Z4 that was a good color and had the options I wanted. I had to have a manual transmission, wood dash, sport, heated seats, zenons. I really enjoy driving it and the fit and finish are superb. Much better than that 1972 MG I had in High School.

For me the Z4 was the only car on the road that I actually thought was worth selling my JCW Mini for. When I saw the Coupe though I was blown away :o and just had to have one :P .

When I got the itch to change my much loved '03 MR2 Roadster, I discounted the MX5 for being to similar, I didn't much like the TT in the looks dept and got put off a '02 Boxster due to running costs. I still wanted a roadster as its only used as a second car.

I narrowed it down to an SLK or S2000. No S2000's for sale in Northern Ireland at the time so made some appointments to view some around London and flew over the next day. 1 had been sold, one was on loan, one was older than the salesman told me, one was in really poor condition and the last and final one had been increased by £1000 overnight due to good weather. So I went home, slightly annoyed.

Back in Northern Ireland I went upto Belfast and was looking around at SLK's in the main dealer, and went in to enquire about a test drive (only a few months before this I had bought a Smart car from the same dealer on behalf of a friend of mine in London). For "security" reasons they wouldn't let me have a test drive that day (WTF??) so despite telling them that it would mean another 180 mile round trip for a 20 min test drive, I left empty handed. I found them to be pretty snooty - probably I think they took a dim view of a potential customer who wears shorts.

So I opted back for an S2000 and went to see the Sales Manager at Pat Kirk Honda in Omagh. He gave me a good px on the MR2 and although he had no cars in stock, he found several I liked on the Honda UK database, as ex-demo cars. I ordered one and gave him £1000 deposit. 3 weeks later and heard nothing, went in and was told that that car was snapped up before he could order it. We found anothert car, better colour actually and he promised to order me this. Again, 2 weeks later and car had been sold elsewhere. This happened 3 times in total over 2 months and I was getting really fed up. He obviously didn't want to do business.

Finally, I was driving past a BMW dealer in Coleraine and saw my zed on the forecourt. Went in (wearing shorts) and was treated in a very friendly manner. Drove it, loved it, named my price and got a deal. Drove it back home 4 days later.

My first call on the way was to the Honda dealer, whereby I pitched up, got out and stood and waited whilst the guy sheepishly refunded my S2000 deposit... all the time whilst a middle aged couple were stood on his forecourt admiring my Zed!

All in all, despite a few niggly issues, I love the Zed!

You've got to love being able to go back and show them what they missed out on.
Being a very young/geeky looking 25 year old I tended to get pretty much ignored at most dealerships, I haven't had the chance to go back into any of them since getting my Z4 though.

went with a buddy of mine to go look at the M6 vert in the showroom. owner and salesmanager are long time friends. inside of one hour my buddy is driving my Tundra while i'm driving my new coupe home. impulse buy all the way

I was looking for something fun to replace my bike that I was selling.
Test drove some other roadsters and my wife found a great deal in the paper on a Z4. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one I wanted.
OOOPS...forgot to sell the bike...

Need something to have my wife's focus to move away from shoes & purses... Now her focus is on rims & dinans, and she's still looking and shoes & purses... It was financially disastrous decision

I wanted a convertable sports car that was fast enough, handled well, held enough luggage for the two of us to go on three-week Eurpoe-wide trips, would not cost and arm and a leg to run, and looked good. It also had to be my everyday car.

So, I went through...

MX-5 - not fast enough
Honda S2000 - too tricky and not practical enough
Boxter - too expensive to buy and run, and not nice enough on my eye
Audi TT - Zzzzz (even when going very quickly indeed)
Lotus ... - not practical
VX420 - Griff Rhys-Jones' underpants and a bloody Vauxhall badge (why not call them an Opel??)

What else is there?

Z4!

I went and had a go in one and really liked it. It was a good drive, and both inside and out fell easily on my eye. Then, I could not believe how little money I needed to spend in order to buy one, and that it should be as easy and cheap to run as our 325ti Compact.

I am completely happy with my car, which for me is very unusual (see my thread on the six-month itch).

I remember going to the launch of the Z4 at my dealer - thought it was a fantastic looking car! Some years later the extended warranty was coming to an end on my 540, and I went to talk to my sales guy to get an idea where to go next - was thinking a 550 at the time. I arrived there on a Saturday morning after having talked to my mechanic as well (I always let him know when I am in the mood to buy so he can tell me what to stay away from on their lot!).

My sales guy met me at his office door and said he has solved my dilemma - a Z4 3.0 had come back in that day on trade and he could make me a deal. I test drove it, and that was it.

Around year later the wife and I stopped by the dealer to see what they had. Saw the Sapphire black M roadster on the lot - thought it was ordered in for someone but was just there as stock. My sales guy wasn't there but another one showed me the car, and let us take it for a spin - signed the papers and took delivery one year after the first Z4 to the day.

I was looking for something else than a BMW MINI of which I have owned 4 since they came out in 2002.
Tested other cars but they just didn't have the driver appeal as a package that the MINI had!

Saw the Z4 Coupe (never liked the roadster) and just fell in love with it!

Saw the one I have now in the dealers, sat in it, drove it, bought it!! :driving: :D
