Took my MINI Cooper S in for service and started looking at the sapphire black Z4M, on the dealer showroom, while waiting. After looking at it, say about 20 times, I walked outside and see an Interlagos Blue, and it is on sale! Phone call to insurance,,,,hmm, just a slight markup per year, that is a lot better than I was expecting,,,,,talk to one of the dealers of approximately what my MINI would trade in for, about 6k less than what I paid for it 4 years prior :) ,,,,, go home and ask the wife if she would mind, nope not at all :D 3 days later, I drove her home! :driving: :driving:

I was on my way to the Lotus dealership to buy an Elise, but had some time to kill before meeting up with a mate to head there together (he wanted one too).

The Lotus dealer wouldn't let me drive it, despite having the cash ready.

BMW was more than willing, I bought it.

Hope you drove to the lotus garage in your new car, spoke to the manager, and told him why they lost a sale.

I really hate wankers like that!

*turned out well in the end though

To answer that question I need to go back a few years well maybe more than a few. As a teenager I loved the Pontiac Fiero it was small and sporty and a 2 seater. I have always found 2 seaters to be the ultimate in driving experience. It is a bit selfish to own a 2 seater knowing that you will never be the one to haul around people and to me that was just fine. As I got a bit older and was nearing getting my license the Fiero was becoming a harder car to find with low miles and they were known to catch on fire. So, after some research I settled on a 944 turbo it was not terribly pricey and for the time looked pretty awesome and it was a Porsche. Since I was still in high school my parents bought me the car but that did not last long since I managed to rack up some serious tickets and ultimately my parents took the car from me and gave me a Volvo 740 GL turbo  . That was when I realized that I needed to be a more mature driver, but then again what do you expect buying a teenager a fast car. Fast forward a few years I found my next dream car it was a 1995 Honda Del Sol SI. I was so anxious to get into a 2 seater and with my retail job I managed to scrape enough while attending college to buy one. That really gave me a feel of what I had been searching for an open top and 2 seats that were also factory recaro buckets. My next car was a 300ZX TT. Again really fast and a 2 seater it was red on red and a real beauty of a car. I drove that for a bit but found it to be terrible in the winter. Also, it did not help that any repair is so ridiculous and impossible to do on your own that I had to sell it while it still ran well ( the valve cover gasket was leaking too but you never heard that ). Having driven mainly 2 seaters my entire life a good friend of mine who also happens to work at a dealership sold me a 3 series coupe. I decided to give a car with more than 2 seats a try. It is then when I discovered BMW is the car I will always own. Once you have owned a Bimmer it is hard to drive anything else. Fast forward four years I had the car paid off and was itching to get back into a 2 seater. I still own my original DelSol and have owned a total of 5 throughout the years with a CRX in there but those seemed to be more of a toy than a real car. As I aged though I found myself wanting a luxury yet sporty 2 seater. My first thought was a S2000 but I really like the way BMW's drive so I looked into the Z4 which I quickly became obsessed with. I knew I wanted the 3.0 but was unsure of the color. Initially I wanted the white on black interior but those were next to impossible to find. After a lot of searching I found "the one". It was beautiful black with all the options I wanted. I had always thought I would miss my 3 series but since the day I traded her in for my Z4 I have had nothing but pure excitement in my Z4. It is the only car I have ever owned that I still get excited to drive every day. So that is how I decided on my Z4. I think this like my Honda will be one car I never part with.

The strange thing was that I know the salesman through car meets, was very odd. I took the Z4 to the next meet, but didn't see him!

Heard of it happening a few times though, a friend went into Audi to trade his S4 up to an RS4 - but the young salesman wanted to sell him a diesel. He tried to tell him the performance was almost as good, but then my friend pointed out he had a Ferrari and knew what performance was - then walked ;)

i sold my 1970 mustang, and i wanted another car for the weekend, something that stands out,i don't like driving common cars,i was looking at getting a mint 91' porsche 911 steptronic coupe ,beautiful car,but i decided to get the Z4 because it's also a nice car,and more practical as far as upkeep ,also needed something the wife could drive every now and then when i'm out of town (SHE WAS HESITANT TO DRIVE THE MUSTANG) , to keep it in running condition till i get back, and not get in trouble, (SHE'S GOT HEAVY FOOT). so far i love the car.

i was also considering buying a preowned Lotus Elise with about 7k on the clock, but then i got married ,and well, ............

My wife spotted it and the rest was pretty much decided!! (not that I'm complaining). I am waiting delivery of 4 new 18" wheels and 452 Falken's. Will start on wind screen soon.

My motivation first came from a friend of mine who had just bought a used Boxter in the US for substantial $$ savings (compared to what we pay for the same in Canada). He convinced me how simple it was to import a car of my choice, so I started looking. I wanted to buy my first roadster, a two seater, manual, relatively affordable, quick and sexy. Don't care for the looks of the Boxter or the S2000, and the TT simply wasn't a consideration as a real sports car.

Then came the Z4! Loved the looks from most angles, great to drive quick or just cruising the country roads. That beautiful exhaust sound and the signature BMW driving experience.

After a month or so of looking, I found this one owner week-end driver in Albany, NY at a very reasonable price (on Ebay)...and it was silver with red leather! A rare color combination that I enjoy very much. Would buy another one without hesitation.

I did a long line of Audis (A4 2.8, B5 S4 2.7t sedan, B6 4.2l S4 Avant) that all did track duty before deciding that I needed a car with a lot less weight. I wanted a Lotus Elise, but there is no way one of those would work as a daily driver so I grabbed a Honda S2000 instead. Nice track car (27 events in 2 seasons), but a very primitive ride compared to the German cars I had grown used to for daily driving. I sat in a Cayman S a couple of years ago and my love for the Honda S2000 pretty much went "poof" on the spot. I knew the days of ragtops on the track were about to be severely curtailed so the next step had to be a hard top with at least a C pillar in order to match new and upcoming club rules. I spent a few months researching the Cayman and then found myself looking at a choice between the ///M Coupe and the Cayman S. I finally decided that BMW had the right answer for what I wanted and as I got ready to pull the trigger discovered the 3.0si Coupe which turned out to be what I really wanted as my next car instead of the ///M.

Got it and love it. No regrets at all.....

I used to drive a Miata and fell in love with the lines of the Z4, I particularly like the side view and the curviture of the back quarter panels, the back could be a little longer though for my taste. :D

An estate agent i knew got one when they first launched (in Sterling grey) and i fell in love with it at 1st sight, i had to have one but i had to wait 3 years before i could afford to get the one i wanted....was it worth the wait?.........god yes!

Paris Auto Show, 2006.
Saw it in the flesh for the first time ever and never looked back. The styling of the Coupé was just delicious, and for it to be an M...

After coming back from vacation, I was still obsessing over the car so I did my test drives to see if that would shake off my lust. I guess you know how the rest of the story went. 8)

Here's the pic I took @ the Paris Auto Show almost 2 years ago...

I first spotted a picture of the Z4 coupe in Evo mag a few months before it hit the UK showrooms. Loved the look of it and was pretty much sold on getting one. When I tried one out for size I wasn't sure it was big enough for me - bit of a squeeze getting in and out of the car but plenty big enough when in.

Then thought sod it and bought one at the begining of last year. I did consider a cayman but pref the BM.

I'd been looking at cars for months, waiting until I really needed a car of my own.

The original idea was a Seat Leon TDI for lots of commuting to a new job but that job never happened. Got a better job a couple months later and didn't need a car for the commute as train was easier, so thoughts went to the Civic Type-R (old shape), then the S2000 for even more fun, both would wait until I'd saved plenty of cash.
Then my work decided to move office (now delayed until next month) which would make driving easier, despite the 1 hour commute. So plans changed again, the Leon was back as a possibility but I prefered to go for a few years older 3 series. 330d's seem to get around 45mpg though and for around the same price I could get a Z4 that does 35mpg and with petrol being so much cheaper than diesel it's not that bad on costs. Plus diesels have potentialy higher repair costs. In the end I decided the Leon's interior was just too boring and the VW golf is overpriced and dull too.

Other considerations were the Boxster but Porsche service costs and much worse mpg put me off.
The Audi TT 3.2 Coupe was very close to beating the Z4, I love the DSG but it is also a potential massive repair bill and it's not as good for fuel and a higher road tax bracket.
Nissan 350z looks great but again it's more expensive to run.

I love my Z4 for the fact it's got more power than I'll ever need, looks awsome, it more comfortable than most cars I've been in and it can give sensible fuel usage (when I feel like it)

I wanted a change from the usual run of the mill car. The Mustang was a blast but a bit of a chunk in the handling department. So I started looking at two seater roadster/sports cars. I looked at used 911 cabs but the fit and finish was poor and the interior was a bit dated and cheap looking. When I lifted the floor mat out to look at the carpet under it for wear I discovered that it wasn't the floor mat after all! It was the carpet, just laying there, unattached. Plus, no manual release for the hood. One I looked at had a dead battery and we couldn't get the hood open to jump it even using the (rather strange) procedure of hooking up a jump box to a specific fuse in the fuse panel to activate the release. So... On to the Boxter. Mpg could be better, harsh ride (although fantastic handling), throw away unrepairable engine with a record of catastrophic failures, and overall high repair costs. Boxter was out.
Researched the Z4 and couldn't really find much negative about it other than some people didn't like the body styling.
Took a test drive and bought it that same day. Been having a blast ever since!

Love at first sight!!! The absolutely unique, edgey styling. Nothing turns more heads that the Z4.

The fact that I was looking for a two seat convertable and it's a BMW didn't hurt either.

The other half liked its looks as well as me for a change

on the practical side - boot space was surprising :D

I wanted a sport car. Briefly looked at a S2000 but saw the Z4 Coupe and fell in love with it. Sat in one at the Tampa Auto
Show and bought one in Montreal as soon as I came back home. I bought the //M because it is the only coupe available in
Canada. The Porsche Cayman is a close second but the excessive price and cost of ownership drove me away.

Cheers.
