what kind of car is a z4?

The concept of "men's" or "girl's" cars always amuses me. Surely it's in the eye of the beholder, by which I mean the purchaser will be the judge of whether it's a suitable car for his or herself. I can honestly say I've never considered myself more or less masculine as a result of driving a car, be it my Z4, my old Smart Roadster, a Boxster or an SUV.
Surely this car is an exception

As an aside, and I'm not wanting to ruffle feathers, but another thing that vexes me is derision of the Boxster on the basis that either it's a poor man's Porsche or else it's not a 911. In both cases partially true but totally meaningless (although the former should be ammended from "poor man" to "poor Porsche owner"; I haven't seen many Boxsters outside the Job Centre Plus). There's always a bigger fish; a Z4 is a poor man's E93 M3 Cab, an SL63 is a poor man's SLR, moreover an SLR is a poor man's CLK-GTR, and my personal favourite: a 911 is a poor man's Carrera GT. Yes, there are better cars than a Boxster, but that doesn't make it a bad one. If it did, what would that make our Z4's? Due credit to the Porsche marketing department though; they seem to have managed to build the 911 into such a status symbol that people often consider a 986S as grossly inferior to the comparably capable 996 3.4.
All so true

It depends on what color :D i've always been partial to small cars and in particular roof less cars. I've heard "Does that come in men's sizes" etc. First one was a 68 MG Midget which I drove in the mid seventies until the wheel fell off. Back then most US cars were enormous and gas was cheap. Just a preference of mine. There are some, my wife included, that think certain colors are for men and others for women but drive what you like and to h#@L what others say.

my car is a beast - there's no way you could class it as feminine, not even slightly! Yes it's beautiful but then so is Johnny Depp!

Amen, like others have said, drive what you like. The Z4 3.0 + IMO is too manly/quick to be considered a girls car. I'll soon be 28 and people at work constantly ask me why am I driving a car for the ladies, usually a ride will change their mind. I also tell them yeah, it's a ladies car, they just love the car. Which is a plus for a single feller here in Vegas. Now though I think I might put a magnaflow exhaust as a super easy upgrade that will get the car noticed more.

stiff ride, a steat on the rear wheels+hear blowing exhaust, no visibility and the power to kill you by your foolishness
one hell of a girl car yea.. :)

Been lucky never had a bad word said about my Z4 the opposite most people when i tell them what car i drive are normally impressed or call me a flash sod.

My mates that have seen the car really like it especially the interior.

The only time i got stick about the hairdresser thing was when i told some mates that they get called hairdressers cars while on a weekend away and they gave me hell asking if i bought the 3.0 model so i could get to my apointments quicker and when we were driving back from heathrow airport they spotted a Z4 parked outside a nailbar i got slated but since they have seen the car they love it.

The best comments ive had were from a couple of AC Cobra owners while at Le Mans last year now that is the seal of approval in my book. :D

i had all the hairdresser jibes when i got mine, but within a month i dont hear them anymore and everyone loves the car, so just a bit of jealousy - in fact most of my friends wives want a convertible, so whilst they were quick with the jokes they will be hurt in the pocket if the women get their own way lol

IMHO:

Girls cars: Mazda MX-5, BMW Z3, MG thingy

Mans cars: Morgan +8, Aston Martin anything, Porsche 911, BMW Z4

Boys cars: hot hatch, Subaru - anything with exhaust pipe diameter > 2"

:)

Yeah, more than a few wives/girls commented that they want one.
Oh and the Z4 does get you to appointments quicker. It's also the best damn grocery getter on the road for a single guy!

I got stick off my new boss who drives a 02 Rover 25 !!! But he's 'between cars' at present. or so he says..Talked himself into having to buy something really good or have to eat a heap of umble pie! Tosser's jealous like so many others. :)

no offense girls, maybe its just the girls that i know, but turning the traction off on days like today where its been on off raining, i doubt any of them would of caught the slidey rear enders i had today whilst blasting out of roundabout, little bit scary but fun, first time i turned it all off, normally just drop to the dtc light on the dash but wanted to see where the limits in the wet were.

Could be. THIS girl has her money in on a lottery for one of 8 seats in the May M school with our chapter of the BMWCCA. Wish me luck.

Why in God's name are concerned about this? We all bought the damned car and we haunt this forum which implies a higher than average owner satisfaction with our decision. We do not need to be defensive or analytical about our choice. If there are instances of buyer remorse regarding their decisions then sell the car.

I'll say you're wrong with one car there... The MX5. It is one of the last truly brilliant sports cars. That said, I'm not getting back into one, am I? :D

MX5 may be brilliant sport cars, but not for men/boys. I had only seen 1 or 2 female drivers in Z4 in my life. :) Men will only drive 2.5 or 3.0 Z4, not 4-cylinder ones. Girls/women should keep themselves in Renault/Peugeot CC, MGF, Z3, TT Convertible (Mk1/2), SLK (Mk1), and Mini Convertible. :D

:o  :poke:

I don't like any of those, too girly and slow :P

I wouldnt say the Z3 is a girlie car. The wider bodied versions give a muscular look imo, the M versions in particular. I also found my 2.8 more physically demanding to drive than the Z4, both the clutch and steering were heavier. Certainly felt it more ihe arms and legs after a long drive.

The only thing 'girlie' about a Z4 is the horn... resembles the sound you'd get if you stood on a duck!
