What have you done to your car today?

Installed new LH rear "mudflap" (not sure what BMW calls it).

NICE, but a good job you dont live here in blighty, the pot holes and b4astard speed ramps would rip that off in no time.

No holes drilled through bumper, only the splitter, so I can always remove it if it gets cratered. But it was quite expensive all said done. :? :o

Rod run this morning

Relocated the roof motor into the boot today and replaced the motor. Props to the people that do that regularly...I never want to have to do that again.

Relatively simple process but my body is not used to the positions you need to get into for that job, I am aching!

Got my mitts on a set of black 'M' spoke covers. They weren't in the best of condition in terms of the 'soft touch' nonsense wearing off, but then I noticed the shiny black underneath and had a brainwave; why not remove all the soft touch nonsense? Ended up spending half an hour with a bottle of IPA (not the beer) and a cloth and got about 99% of it off of the front pieces. Could probably do with a quick go-over again, but it looks so much better.

Yup, I’ve ended up removing the soft touch off the steering wheel controls because it had worn and looked poo (especially against the new wheel trims that I bought).

Nothing quite as exciting or impressive as building a steering wheel warming system from scratch, but parts from the BMW mothership arrived. Cruise control switch which will get fitted with the special loom in a couple of weeks, strangely getting it from Sytner and was cheaper than getting a secondhand one from eBay. Whilst I was there I bought a brand new leather gearknob to replace the plastic one, and fitted that. Was expecting it to put up a fight to take the old one off but wasn't too bad.

Parts in places like eBay can be bonkers expensive compared to a dealer. I needed a light bar for my old E92 rear trim. £90 on eBay…£35 for a the dealer. Lots of fixings are similar too.

Fitted the lovely steering wheel that Umfaan sold me. The thinner (non-M) wheel feels so much nicer to me, it has really transformed the car.

If you don't get on with the girthy M wheel, I really recommend the upgrade.

If you do prefer a thicker wheel, mine will be up for sale soon :D

Replaced the missing low horn on the cheap. Discovered on the now-defunct horn that the wiring harness adapter pops off the horn itself and reveals a fairly standard-ish looking couple of connectors underneath. Had a think and remembered I still have a horn from a 1996 328i sat in the shed, which turns out to have a wiring harness adapter that unclips and reveals the same socket on the horn itself.

Ordered a 1 series low horn because it was £15 shipped and a Z4/E85 horn was £45 + shipping, turned up today. Hey presto, the wiring harness adapter pops off and it has the same standard socket underneath. E85 wiring adapter from the broken horn clipped straight on and produces noise when 12V applied to it. Now I just need to fit it to the 3.0si and put the 2.5i's horn back in the 2.5i. Can reach them through the foglight flap in the wheel arch at least.

Hmm. 3.0si has the girthy rim, 2.5i has a lovely svelte rim. I keep thinking I'm happy with the girthy one, then I drive the 2.5i and realise I still much prefer the thinner wheel. Perhaps somewhere between the two would be ideal.

Same for me as my MC has the girthy one, but my 330i is an SE so has the slimmer one which fits my hands much better.

If I ever need a retrim at Royal's I'd ask for it to be slimmed down a it.

I'm reading this and whilst I like my 'M' wheel, I'm wondering if the thinner non-M wheel might be better. I feel like I should grab one off eBay just to compare.

I originally had the thin non-M wheel and it really felt weird to me. I was used to the standard 4-spoke wheel in my e39 which is also thin, but the Z4 stock wheel was thinner.
Replaced it for the M wheel and I'm really happy with it. Although for spinning in 180° corners the thin wheel might have been easier to grab. But for driving fast on the open road, holding the M wheel is the thing. The non-M wheel felt like I was holding a straw.

As the mythical combination of a reasonably priced set of pristine 106 turbines near to me is yet to materialise (I might be being a bit optimistic here), and my baby 104s still have excellent tyres, I decided to fit spacers just to improve the look (and perhaps handling, although I'll never be pushing it hard enough to notice).

Did some research into the numerous threads and came to the conclusion that 15mm front and 20mm back was the correct option, so got a Bimecc kit from eBay with those dimensions. Also came with longer bolts and lockers too. Fitted them this morning (which is the extent of today's manual labour for me), and I like the look. The car's sitting a bit high at the back because my driveway tips backwards, it's less wheelarch-y on flat ground.

The standard leather wheel with a Mewant cover on it seems a pretty good compromise to me.
I have the old wheel you had the trims from. You are welcome to take that and try fitting a cover if you'd like to.
I think you actually saw the one I had on my daily. Maybe worth popping over some time and taking it for a drive to see how it feels?

You might be right there. Let me know when you're not fixing other people's cars and I'll pop over.

Looks way better with the spacers...

I think these are the wheels you are looking for, unfortunatley they were on my wifes Z4, she has changed the wheels since and still has them but she won't sell them...so I can't help! I did ask!

They are, 'style 106'. Saw a photo of some on a black Z4 E85 recently and decided it's what I should have. All I have to do now is to find a set.
Incidentally, stumbled across this site that shows all of the E85/E86 wheel 'styles', you can click on each one for size and ET info too.

Ok

So i changed the oil anf filter and changed the Oil filter housing gasket, no real problems apart from getting the clearence enough to get my fat arse under the car..........and losing another top motor cover bolt!!

Went for a 8 mile drive and pressed the oil check buttonn and all seems ok with 4.25 litre.

Have a look at 1 and 3 series wheels as well, they fit just fine. 1 series have the same offset if I remember correctly, while E90 3 series have 13mm lower offset - it's like you have 13mm spacers all around. At least this is true for 18" wheels, for others just compare data on your link.

E46 3 Series wheels had the same sizes and offsets as E85/86s, and E8* 1 Series seemed to as well.

As x-driver said E9* 3 Series wheels had different offsets that would push them further out in the arches but still fit. I ran my previous E86 with E89 wheels that sat even further out but didn't rub on standard Sport suspension.
