Mr Tidy, this information is much appreciated! I kept looking and was not having any luck finding an illuminated Z4 M ZHP shifter by BMW.
I reviewed the F10 M5 boot/shifter install, looks good & doable to me. So now I need to see if there are any decent prices on the F10 M5 ZHP shifter.

On another note, I requested a quote from royalsteeringwheels.com to get my steering wheel redone. I'm not sure what most members are doing on the plastic portions on the steering wheel. Are folks just repainting them?

Re wheel, chances are when you remove the plastic trim it will get damaged so you need to be really careful when separating them or have a backup set. I personally wanted to go with something different so I went with the BMW individual gray trim pieces.

Your steering wheel combination turned out great! The exact setup that my wife chose, no middle stripe because she said it would bother her if the steering wheel wasn't straight looking when the road is pulling to one direction or the other. So would order from a BMW source for the silver/gray pieces. That breaks up the steering wheel color of just black on black and looks good to me.

My understanding is the the M5 and ZHP shifter knobs are the same. Assuming they are both weighted too.

Thanks, part of the reason for switching to the grey pieces in addition to aesthetics is they are more durable. I wasn't crazy about replacing with the expensive black M trim pieces knowing they would wear again down the road. The grey pieces have a way more durable finish. The side button trim can be bought used for cheap on eBay. The bottom piece is the one you want to get new as I'm not sure how to remove it without snapping the tabs. Just be careful in that not all 'grey' pieces are the same -- charcoal vs silver/chrome, etc.

As for customization, goal was to get something 'sportier' but still retained the oem look and feel. The perforated leather is awesome imo, and yes I skipped on the stripe. I was close to pulling trigger on yellow stripe but thought I might get tired of it later. I'm glad I went with the more subtle look.

The M5 and ZHP knob are the same; only difference is M5 is illuminated and comes with integrated leather boot. Hence it's way more expensive, and frankly not sure if it's worth it. If you can live w/o the lighting, I'd just get a regular geunine ZHP knob and reuse your existing leather boot.

• Adjusted my driver's window to address very annoying wind noise. I had tried the under door adjustments but no improvement. Removing the door card and bringing the glass forward slightly seems to have made a big improvement. I might still need a little fettle to get it better but I now know that success is within reach.

• Most importantly of all ... Some fine livery added!

It seemed quite obvious behind my right ear when driving, so I assumed it to be the top rear quadrant. Really looking at it, it became clear to me that the problem was the glass sitting on the seal rather than ‘into’ it. Pressing it against the glass by tilting, i.e. with the 10mm socket under the door, just moved rather than corrected the issue. By moving the glass forward a little, it was better able to sit into the seal in that rear upper area.. I’ve just had a motorway drive, and whilst not 100% cured, it is much much better.

I'll have to take a look at it. I can hear the noise behind my ear as well. It used to help a little when I gave the seals some treatment, but it doesn't really last long.

Ok, I pulled the trigger and ordered the F10 M5 Illuminated Shift Knob - 6 Speed $240.19 out the door from ECS Tuning.
Read all the modifying threads and could have done that, but the M5 model lights up much nicer than the original Z4 M version, at least that's what I read and the pic looked very good! Would hate to mess up my old shifter and/or the new one and then have to turn around order yet another shifter. Nice that this will have the M hash marks already. Will have to decide whether to use the new boot and modify it to fit the Z4 M or stick with the old boot. My old boot is in good shape!

So out for a drive in the z4 today, car comes the opposite way and the female passenger gives me the “v” sign. Obviously pi**ed off that we are in a nice car with the roof down in the sunshine and she was stuck in her husband’s sh*te box. What a cretin.

Apparently it must be doable as the pic posted by Ninarvana looked great where the boot meets with the console. I will report back on what I decide to do. If it looks like it will be bunched up at the bottom, for sure I won't do it. I like that carbon fiber in the pic and I have seen a few members with that. I wonder if that is factory or an add on?

Correct go with the f10 m5 knob. It’s a 2 min process to remove the plastic frame. I want to say it’s secured by staples, don’t recall for sure. And when you transfer it over to your Z, don’t even bother trying to glue the new boot to your trim. Totally unnecessary, it stays on plenty tight once you snap everything in. You’ll spend more time popping the old knob off. Very easy mod.

Update, although I verified in a chat with ECS Turning that the item I was ordering was in fact the ZHP F10 M5 Illuminated Weighted shifter knob/boot, when it arrived it was not. Just the normal stock M5 shifter. Returned! They do carry the correct one, but it is $301 plus taxes. They do currently have a $25 off promotion when you spend $250+. Will reorder the correct model from someplace???

In general you should order by p/n. A lot of BMW knobs may be compatible with various models but the f10 m5 should’ve only come with one specific knob. What was the p/n of what you received?

And yes it’s quite pricey which is why I said if you can do without lighting, better to go with the zhp knob for 1/4th of the price.
