What have you done to your car today?

Hi,
Been lurking around for about a year since I purchased (April 2020) e86 ruby black coupe 07 plate. Purchase price was sub 4.5k with 150k on the clock, with scant history, so it was a gamble. A year on and having created a baseline by replacing a plethora of parts, this weekend being the last item for baselineing, six coils Bosch to Delphi.

One last error with ebox fan.

Great purchase for that price.

Out of interest what made you replace the coils? Did you get an error, or just something you are doing based on age/mileage?

Hi Jameszy,
i have read these coils need replacing after 100k so it was a quick swap (less than 30 mins work). So like you suggested its mileage thing. Now i've changed all the obvious age / mileage related things its a case of keeping things tidy. Hoping to get to 200k, so planning on regular oil and oil filter changes every six months. Factoring in purchase price and parts (and in some cases indy BMW labour) its still working out to be a decent cost coming in under < £6.5k for 150k miles (is that good, only time will tell :D )

i use this, aliexpress. its the same: you need the 40€

I tried to post this yesterday, but it hung up for some reason, probably PICNIC (Problem In Chair, Not In Computer)
Wifey took her E85 for a blast to the shops so I wandered into the garage, moved a few bits around and discovered I own an E89! (Well it's been a while)
Was so excited I dragged it out and gave it a clean. 8)

Fitted this lot today.
20210329_101130.jpg
Quite straightforward really but wow was the old one brittle, particularly the centre ones around the coil/ sparkplug holes. No wonder bits get dropped into the engine :( . Luckily I didn't lose any bits but there were a lot of them.

All seemed to look OK, no sign of oil around the sparkplug

Last time I changed one of these it was flat & made of cork

I feel like I've achieved quite a lot today - sorting little things which have been annoying me since I bought the Z4!

Fitted my new badge to replace the one I damaged with masking tape , replaced the slightly broken high-level brake light and removed the seats, ready for a good going over with dodo juice leather cleaner and restorer. The carpet is getting the bissell wet-vac treatment all over! :D Also added the most important bit of kit - Forum sticker!

Almost all went smoothly too... I don't think I've ever done any DIY job on a car, without something going wrong. I watched videos and read guides on removing the brake light (dead simple, 15 minute job etc.), but mine would just not come out on one side. Turns out the plastic casing was wedged under the bodywork and I had to gently level it out in the end, however the lens paid the price. Then the plug simply would not budge. I thought it was superglued in! Some brute force, ignorance, lots of swearing and copious amounts of vape juice consumed (I know, I know... my mate calls it a 'douche-flute'), it relented and popped out.

I feel slightly broken now, but satisfied! :

Hi mate badge looks good. Where did you get it? Need to replace mine too

BMW main dealer - was £36 I think? I bought a cheap one from ebay, but didn’t fit. True what they say, buy cheap = buy twice :x

Cleaned carpets today, using a bissell wet vac. Immensely satisfying and the carpet now looks and smells like new :D

Also took the opportunity while seats were out, to get in every nook and cranny that I could. Neighbours must think I’m a right sad git, cleaning behind my speakers grilles with my detailing brush and hoover...

Even if they did, under it all the source of it would be envy that they didn’t have a hobby or interest to put time into.

I’m on 95,000, so might get them changed at the next service this summer. Did you notice a change after doing them?

Tarted up the front spoiler.

Hi, not noticed a massive improvement, fuel economy is about 45mpg if I keep at steady 2000 rpm, but right foot always takes advantage of the empty roads :D .
Idling is better, rev counter is stable.

My front foglights have the usual corrosion.
I thought about changing them for ~£180.
Then I thought maybe I'll pull them out and refurbish them but no doubt they'll look rubbish and corrode again.
Then I thought I'll wrap them in light smoke film, which I did all for the cost of £1.60 :D

Your clean engine bay puts mine to shame.

Have you noticed any change in induction noise or power since replacing?

Well, the car had 2 day professional clean up, so engine bay was cleaned professionally :) I did a short video about it (sorry it's on Croatian) - https://youtu.be/9l9sE2M16hw

Regarding any change in induction noise, well I didn't, I had a short drive in the city, so I didn't notice anything, but regarding power, I would say, it has more air in the lower RPM's, for example when you start on the traffic light, it picks up easily, that's my personal feeling today. But who knows, my main reason was for this exchange, that I have a filter that I can wash / clean, not throw away and buy a new one. Performance was a second motive.

Today I had a custom stainless system fitted at Simon's custom exhausts in East Kilbride. To say I'm happy is an understatement.

Got home and fitted my genuine bmw floor mats

Exhaust looks pucker mate, love it! What's it sound like?

Fitted a new battery today. Hopefully that'll get rid of the strange electrical gremlins I had last week :(

Took the long route round to pick SWMBO up from work in Belper. What a fantastic day for a drive with the roof down :driving:

Just waiting for my new discs & pads all round to arrive now. Might be a while before I fit them though looking at the weather forecast for next week :(
