What have you done to your car today?

Alppina #98 had a wash and scrub this morning. The boot struts decided to let go whilst loading, hence the wound on the head. That's my next job after MOT tomorrow.

All black Alpina with hardtop ! Looks superb ! Had a look at a Maldives one last year...was and still am very tempted :D Hope your head gets better soon

A mixed day...

Passed MOT with just an advisory on a corroded exhaust hanger - which the mechanic fixed with a bit of welding.

Used the Torque app for the first time, to scan my car.

Found an error code P0597 which relates to the thermostat.
0D5D471F-3803-4C04-BD87-6A5787930BDE.jpeg

Anyone have any experience of this code?

All appears well with the car, no overheating indicated on the dash gauge, heaters work great blowing hot, no warning lights on dash.

With mine being a N52, is this an indication of a failing water pump? Or just a failing / failed thermostat?

One thing I have noticed is occasionally the radiator fan will keep running after I’ve turned the engine off after a long drive.

Incidentally the fault code doesn’t show on INPA.

I don't have any experience of it, but as I understand it the thermostat on the N52 is electric and defaults to being open if it fails.

Based on this list http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/ebrock63/2009-03-22_230136_dtc_codes.pdf (it's about 2/3 of the way down on Page 10) it says "Thermostat Heater Control Circuit Open" it sounds like your thermostat isn't closing.

I would expect it to take a while for your engine to get up to temperature. The temperature gauge in my last E86 would be up to normal within a couple of miles.

Thanks.

I’ll note how long it takes for my car to get to temp, though I’ve never thought it was ‘too long’.

Is there any side effects / potential damage with driving the car with the defective thermostat? Other than taking longer to get to temp.

Will look to replace the thermostat ASAP regardless.

Cleaning/ derusting brake calliper sliders ☹️ Car sat in a carport since October and the brakes are sticky. The discs are rusty too but a vigorous drive will sort that bit out

Took about 15 minutes to do & works a treat .
Oh, it's a Bluetooth Audio Interface that connects to the existing wiring for the the CD Changer. So much better than using the rechargeable unit that plugged in via an Aux socket. Always on when the car's running & connects automatically after initial set up :) .

I recently attempted this via the boot of my coupe but gave up when I realised I needed to pull out a lot of carpet and some of the trim.

How did you managed to do this in 15mins? Do you think it is easier on a roadster?

Thanks.

I am also REALLY interested in that solution! I guess that you access it by selecting "CD" input on the radio?

I believe you fit this behind the head unit rather than the cd changer end.

There are 2 connectors that would be connected to the CD changer if there was one, behind the boot bulkhead approximately in the middle where the centre console etc. abuts in the cabin. I could just see them looking with a torch through the hole if you take out the storage bin behind the driver's seat. (assuming you don't have speakers there). I couldn't reach them from there.

I was able to wriggle my hand under the bottom of the bulkhead lining in the boot and grab them and pull them out. Mine weren't tied down and there was enough slack. You can then connect and push the whole thing back under.

Several others have done this and there will be better info along soon ?

Well I can't really help with the coupe but on the roadster it's just a matter of removing the boot bottom carpets, there are two push in clips that need to be prised out. Then on the rear bulkhead, still in the boot, remove the push in clips & lift the carpet in the centre. Behind there is an aperture in the bulkhead that leads through to the centre console between the seats. My CD Changer cables were ty-wrap'd to another cable in the boot just below that aperture. Simply plugged in the bluetooth adapter & tucked it away inside the aperture.

idej_z4, honestly can't help you with the coupe but I wouldn't have thought it'd be that different from the roadster. Bit less room maybe :? .

Frag, yes exactly that just press the mode button to select CD on the radio & that's it

Darkangelv2, as above the connections are in the boot on the pre facelift so no need to access the rear of the radio.

As Spriteracer says above really but I think it's easier to access from the boot than through the centre console.

Won’t be to everyone’s taste but I finished my custom install for my air Suspension controller and headunit . Just like to play about with things and don’t really like the way most look after fitting a headunit with the fascia kits available. Still waiting on my gear gaitor and handbrake stuff coming back from being done in alcantara at the retrimmers. Then just some stack oil pressure/temp gauges and mats and the interior is done .

Wrapped in brushed black along with the door handles , centre console . Painted the plastic inner parts on the console satin black too.

Double gauge pod built into the ashtray with a 3D printed part from another member . Sprayed that in textured black . Didn’t come out amazing but il leave it be for now .

No, it does go in the boot behind the carpets and involves bits of wood and bruised arms getting there to the multi cable, which is taped up out the way. But its brilliant. Took me about 30 mins of sweat and swear to sort it, but now works off my phone with all my music library on spotify .
One thing it does though, is when I have the music on, in the garage on my sonos, is it automatically grabs the music onto bluemusic when I open the car door. So, I have to keep resetting the phone . Was a pain when doing the rear discs and fiddling with the handbrake last week. :D
