What have you done to your car today?

Forgot to post this yesterday, but after 3 and a half years of Z4 ownership I finally pressed the Sport button!

TBH I didn't notice any difference.

Took her for an MOT which she passed with flying colours again and no advisories :D she has passed every MOT from new only advisories in 11 years have been for worn rear tyres and illegal plates well done old girl :D :D

Mines due this week. Hoping she goes the same way. No failures on record, always nice to keep it up.

Nice! Well done to the both of you!
Mines not so squeaky clean! Think mine had a illegal rear tyre before (I wonder why :P lol) so that was a failure... before my ownership but puts a black mark on the cars record!

I find the increased throttle response so eager that it makes it difficult to drive smoothly :o

MOT sorted, although i have a leaking rear passenger shock absorber. Surprised by that, as i didn't notice it whilst i was cleaning the arches last week.

Also handbrake needs adjusting, but i knew that. I think thats quite a simple job, from what i remember. Hole in the disc?

Just getting my 4th set of rear Vredestein Ultrac Vortis fitted. Bought from Camskill for £206 pound including postage and fitted for 40 quid. Each set has got me just over 20k miles and the fronts last twice as long so still have another 20k left on them.
Looking forward to a slightly more composed ride and better handling :driving:

That's not right Iain - the steering change is a bit subjective but the throttle response should be very obvious. I find it near impossible to heel and toe downshift in normal mode as the engine is quite lazy to repond, or at least needs a big prod on the throttle to get the engine to blip. In sport mode it is much easier as the engine revs rise much quicker to a relatively small throttle input.

When I was looking at Z4s it was suggested to me that a common cause of the Sport mode to be ineffective is a problem with the Vanos system, i.e. Vanos running in a default mode regardless of sport mode setting. Do you know if your car has ever had the Vanos seals replaced (admittedly the N52 doesn't seem to have a widespread Vanos issue like earlier N series 6 cylinder engines). Might be worth a fault scan at our next meet?

It slightly reduces the distance the throttle pedal needs to be pressed to accelerate. Which makes driving smoothly slightly harder.
It also makes the steering a bit heavier, which i only really notice at low speeds when its a pita.

The button is BS to help sell them as sport cars. Which they're not - a fast cruiser is how id describe a zed.

Thats cheap. I paid £215 delivered from camskill for the same tyres. can't go wrong with them.

Yes I’d never used Camskill before as I’m lazy and kind of happy to pay the local tyre filter a bit more if they do a good job, but this time they messed up the order and said they couldn’t get them for another week. As I had already been waiting a week I got them from Camskill in two days. Brilliant service and saved myself nearly 70 quid!!
Car feels so much better. The last few thousand miles on a set of tyres really aren’t very good.

Washed her because god knows she needed it :D

As above the throttle response is very different much more instant the pressure required on the pedal is a lot less my car feels more lively and the steering feels lighter even though they say it feels more weighted may be its wired the wrong way round a bit like me  and I really notice the difference when I go back to economy mode while driving car feels sluggish and heavy you can even here the revs change as you press the botton

It looks like I need to try it again then!

Because I haven't read the insturctions, do you need to turn Sport on when stationary? I did it on the move.

Chris, it has no fault codes; Vince kindly cleared a couple of other coeds for me in October to sort an amber EML out!

You can change on the move.

When you hit Sport with the throttle depressed to any degree there is no immediate change. When you next lift off the throttle on reapplication it will have changed to give more throttle opening for less pedal travel.

When you turn Sport off with the throttle depressed it immediately goes back to normal which can easily be felt on the motorway as the car slows down slightly.

For ages I drove around in Sport everywhere except town where 1st gear is annoyingly jumpy. It is great for heel and toe. Then I started using normal again and found the steering better and even more involvement as more control over the throttle and more input required to get the same effect.

To be frank, electric throttle is a right royal pain in the arse on any car I can recall. I miss a good old cable as it did what you asked, nothing more and nothing less. None of this damped or oversprung response BS.

Took it to my local indie for the mot, failed on nearside wiper blade hadn't noticed small split in it, bought new bosch blades fitted them, PASSED, one advisory for left rear tyre low tread which I will change.
Pretty good result for a ten year old car :driving:

I'll be fitting my new clear third brake light when I get home.

Question though, I'm not sure if I have the old "82N" springs or the new ones, Not sure how to tell, would I be safe with finger tight each of them, then half or one turn with the socket?

Cheers.

For the sake of a £10 fitting kit, i'd buy the new springs and nuts. I replaced mine and bought the fitting kit over a year ago and have no cracks as yet.

Before, i bought a new unit but reused the original nuts and springs and it cracked within a few months.

Mind you, some of the actual led's inside the unit have failed on this new one. Shoddy BMW quality :headbang:

Sad times, I'll fit for now and buy the fitting kit and change it over when I get them, I don't want to drive my car with the rear light lens held to the car with cellotape anymore :(

Anyone got the part numbers to hand for the revised springs and nuts?

Cheers.

Update

Light is in, The springs looked fairly new, not sure if that means anything but when I find the parts number i'll change it regardless

Another question though, I don't know how far to tighten it, I've gone as far as tightening the nuts until it wouldn't turn no more which was rather easy, there was no sign of the nut getting tighter it just stops, so I then loosened each half a turn just in case i've just tightened it waaaaaay too much, Is this correct or have I just over tightened it?

Got my parts from BMW and installed them today. Now I have a complete wheel liner in the left rear, a working light in the fender and a new new channel cover on the belly. The M is complete again. :D :D :D

Insurance sorted for another year so that's all 3 done the road tax being the most painful :x  my MOT and insurance together cost less

Just had a call the wheels are ready at the Powder coaters, so off to pick the car up will post some pictures later.
