What have you done to your car today?

It also has the very practical benefit of preserving one’s licence on the motorway, or if you know cameras are about.

This is why I retrofitted it to the 3.0si. Never had the same issue in the 2.5i for some reason

Finished a few interior bits today, replaced one of the rear speakers while I had the interior out, and just refitted it all back after wrapping all the ali trim panels, and repainting the plastics around the gear and brake levers, as it was all looking a bit tatty. I think the previous owner must have had a big watch or chain as the ali panel was really pitted around the handbrake. Really pleased with how it's turned out, hopefully it will wear well. Have tried to fit cruise, but can't get it working, so that needs some investigation.

Not strictly to my car (although I did change a couple of options). My 'scanner 1.4' thing turned up today, so armed with a cheap secondhand laptop I got from Facebook marketplace last week, I obviously had to go outside (in the rain) and have a play, just to make sure it works, you understand. I feel a bit more relaxed about BMW ownership now I can get the computers to tell me exactly what's wrong, I'm sure that functionality will become useful sooner rather than later.

Today’s effort was fairly easy.

Apart from working out the best option to lift the car (thanks for the help!), I decided to drain the gearbox and replace the fluid. It’s a fairly easy job, as long as you have a decent 8mm Allen key that hasn’t been rounded off. My car has 83,000 miles on it, and the fluid looked fairly clean, but I suppose it would do. The only problem is that the syringe I have is going to take too long to fill it back up, so I’ll have to go back to the shop tomorrow to get a transfer pump. In the end, I went in for Total GL4 Gear 8.

Today's Project: Hunting Down the Manifold Leak

Today I decided it was time to track down the source of the leak on the exhaust manifold. I rigged up a workshop vacuum and set it to blow air into the exhaust system. With some soapy water sprayed around the manifold, it didn’t take long to spot the crack – bubbles gave it away.

As a temporary fix until I can sort it properly in October, I’ve picked up some Extreme Heat JB Weld. It’s not a permanent solution, but it should hold things together for the time being. Let’s see how it goes!

Out of interest, is there a way of noticing you've got a manifold leak on a 2.0? I've got the MOT on Tuesday and I'm paranoid that I might have a leak too.

Yep
youll hear it and sometimes it will throw CEL errors.

Its a common thing apparently on the N46 engines, they can be welded for around 250 quid.

Sold the 2.5i to a friend! Swapped some of the bits back I'd borrowed on the 3.0si (drivers side cup holder mainly) and dug out all the M54/2.5i related spares/parts I had in the shed/storage to hand over with the car. Swapped the sports seats back into the car for the sale, only for the airbag light to come back on. Up early debugging that, didn't manage to resolve it (suspected pre-tensioner but even swapping the old one off the old seats it still threw a code. Sigh.)

Then drove ~230 miles north to friend's house to do the exchange of money for physical item(s), and a lovely tea & cake in a town near him in the borders. Fingers crossed we'll see him around these parts, and possibly even at meets/runs in future in it.

Fitted a new high level brake level this morning because the old one was knackered.

Spent the afternoon with [ref]RMB[/ref] fitting our cruise control and looms. His was standard, mine was a [ref]Usel[/ref] “box of tricks”, looms were the same courtesy of [ref]srhutch[/ref]. So grateful to these forum luminaries for providing kit that works.

Went out for a back to back test drive later - all good.

Not quite today, but last week hit a pothole and immediately heard rattling from the back, uh ho I thought, what have I broke?

Turns out a bracket had snapped on the exhaust; local Indy welded it back for 24 quid - sorted!

Replaced the valvecover and valvetronic gaskets. And as the cover was off, replaced also the eccentric shaft sensor seal. No idea who had the brilliant idea of putting some wires over the valvecover, makes the job slightly more frustrating (N52 engine).

Yeah thanks [ref]Zedebee[/ref], for your help and hospitality. Loved your new motor especially the full leather and induction noise.
Thanks to [ref]Usel[/ref], too for finding my stalk online (as well as my champagne doorcards), and to [ref]srhutch[/ref], for the loom.

New (to me), refurbed steering wheel with new trims, M stitching and perforated leather. Others have said how a refurbed wheel makes a big difference, I wasn't sure but I have to say it transforms how the car feels and looks, very satisfied.

Old wheel will be listed in for sale section.

Completely agree with you; a refurb wheel makes all the difference. 1: it’s adding a personal touch 2: it’s your connection to the car and 3: it’s visually important too

Yesterday it went to the body shop where I removed and stripped the front bumper, rear bumper, headlights, rear lights, mirror caps, mirrors and side indicators and aerial ready for some bodywork attention.
