What have you done to your car today?

All done. No bits left over. All limbs and mirrors intact. And will be all cleared away before management returns!

My month-long journey on fixing a non-working roof came to an end today.

It started with typical symptoms of hydraulic fluid running out, roof operating slowly, motor struggling, etc.

So, first the roof off:

Then clear diagnosis of leaking hinges:

Shipped the hinges to Top Hydraulics, U.S. for refurbishing.

Put everything together, relocated the motor to trunk while I was at it:

Now hoping I don't find any extra parts when cleaning the garage :D

Looking good. Management deserves a day in Brighton as reward

Logistically it's looking more like a day run down for me to fit them.

After 13 years of working on the floor in the rain and cold, I finally have a garage. It’s not massive but I’ll take it😊👍

Finally adjusted the valves yesterday. Thought it was going to be a difficult and tedious task and kept putting it off. I have everything in spec now. Actually I was impressed on how well everything is cleanly designed. Easy to remove radiator fan and easy to slide rockerarms to change out shims. Ordered NGK plugs, so debating on putting everything together now and just cleaning old plugs or waiting a couple of days for new plugs... :driving:

I used the nice writeup link we have although no pics showing at this point. For me I did it differently than the writeup where they adjusted one of the exhaust valves right after an intake with the lobe straight up. And it probably doesn't make enough difference to do it the way I did, but I did all the intake valves at the same time, one after another. I oriented the camshaft lobe to follow the angle of the valve itself, not just straight up and down. So if you drew a straight line through the the camshaft lobe it would match the valve stem angle. When I checked it with the lobe straight up I got a slightly different measurements. But probably not enough to worry about.

I've changed my Rocker Cover Gasket, Engine Oil, Spark Plugs, Air Filter and Cabin Filter.

I didn't expect much improvement, but it's like a new car! I think the plugs were probably the originals at 73k. In the first 100m it felt different, very very smooth, and pulled like a train, just what I'd hoped it would be when I bought it!

Hard to believe that such a simple service can make so much difference!

SORN'd it recently, as my commute is now 80 miles once per week and I have an F10 520D that is more suitable in this weather. :driving:

Not half the fun though...

Finished going over car with clay bar before starting to detail . Didn`t get much off the car surprisingly but I had recently washed it with Bilt Hamber snow foam and chemical guys shampoo  Must try the clay discs when I have finished this bar as it should be much quicker.

Installed two new Meyle engine mounts.

Looking at doing this job soon, how difficult was it to get the driver mount out? It looks more difficult than passenger side?

They were about the same. For the top engine nuts it helps have a 18"-24" long extension. On the RH side the upper aluminum mount (bolted to the engine) hole (where the rubber mount is attached) is slotted to help you get the rubber mount in and out.
