What have you done to your car today?

The Mrs car had the Diff swapped over today and….. it lives!

When I was reading of other forum members taking 5-6hrs to do this on axles stands I approached the garage around the corner and the £100 quoted was what I paid. Very Happy with that to avoid several hours of faffing myself

Car now sounds like a car and not like like a very loud Lathe… project shoestring lives to fight another day 8)

Anyone need a 23KG Diff Shaped paperweight

Stiffened the coil over settings and raised the car up slightly to stop rubbing on the arches and bottoming out on track.
Gave the arches and calipers a good clean too whilst the wheels were off.

Having sorted Youdy's oil filter to block gasket that was leaking oil the other week, I checked mine and discovered mine had started to leak as well. Stripped the alternator out then took the filter unit off and put a new gasket in, the old one was hard due to age and heat cycles over the last 19 years so can't complain. Since I have had the car I have replaced the cam cover gaskets so todays job completes the refresh of gaskets on the top end is now complete. Brand of gasket used today was Elring purchased on ebay.

After, but a couple of bit’s still to wipe down to bring the sheen down a touch and remove a little excess product;

I continued my mission to repaint my brace bars. This time the front one.

Could not remove the front grilles, I think previous owner had them glued so I grew some balls and removed the front bumper. Actually was not difficult at all. I did discover that someone had replaced the expanding bolts with torx screws and in doing so has damaged a plastic panel beneath. I'm heading to the store now for some epoxy glue to remedy that situation.

Front brace bar removed, cleaned and ready for priming. Decided to go with not body colour silver, as others suggested it will look like the paint fell off the bar, so instead will go for anthracite.

Also, I found the top two bolts connected to the bonnet latch fitment were heavily rusted. Almost couldn't unscrew them as they just turned to dust so need to order two new ones to use when respray is complete.

Just out of interest, where in UK is the best place to source replacement bolts such as the rusty ones above?

Nice whippy! Do you notice the ride feel any different with the spacers on?
Whippy and proud
I’ll let you know when I’ve driven it. Need to find some for the front seeing as the 15mm pair have gone on the back. I suspect the fronts will make more of a difference that the rears, if any.

yeh i was thinking that. Putting the 108s back on I realised a subtle increase makes all the difference, the stand in wheels were 0.5 wider on the rear and filled out the arches so much nicer, be keen to know if it does feel any different. :driving:

I'd use real OEM to get the part number and then I'd use autodoc or eBay and search by part number.

Watched Alan (Number5) work his magic and bring the roof back to life on my Partner’s project car… just need it to stop raining now so she pop out in it

Took it to Ross at RBM to investigate a distinct lack of coldness from the A/C.

Only 40g of refrigerant so a regas has worked wonders, but it seems my cooling fan is dead so the compressor may be overheating. Now I'm trying to find out if the electric fan on the M is the same as other E85/86s. realoem seems to suggest it is, but Ross thought the M had a 600w fan rather than the 400w fan for other models. If anyone knows I'd appreciate their advice, especially if they have one kicking around!

I may start a specific thread once it gets booked in - currently got my 3 Series booked in for a puncture warning that won't reset. :headbang:

Added the "elastic mat" to the driver's M sports seat of the coupe. These mats are standard on the non-M sports seats, but the M sports seats lack them, making them more susceptible to "saggy seating" and the foam and plastics in the seat base eventually cracking.

Post-install:

As you may note; I cut the left metal wire and the right metal wire of the two middle ones (middle ones still connected) and installed them opposite from where they are supposed to be (left wire right, right wire left). This has to do with the limited space to work in in the corners versus the "left facing" / right facing" direction of the bottom hooks. Easier to mount a left facing hook (thus approaching the bracket from the "open right side") in a left corner (instead of approaching it from the "closed left corner side").

Anyway: quite an improvement in terms of support. However, as the mat is less "elastic" than one would think given its name, it took me quite some fiddling and swearing to get it into place in the end. Will have to carefully think through doing the same on my roadster's seats as the working space is even more limited due to the components of the electrical seating based underneath the seat ...

Would be interested in knowing what fan you are referring to. I feel like I get excessive heat sometimes when I step out the car and potentially a fan has stopped working the last mechanic just brushed me off with these cars run hot.

The thermostat seems fine but I just feel more heat from it than I used to form memory
