What have you done to your car today?

Although wasn't strictly today (it was Saturday) i took a prospective Z4 owner for a run in mine so he could get an idea on what they are like. First time i have ever done something like that as an enthuiast, hope he joins the fold!

New center brake light fitted along with new springs, let's see how long this one lasts

Installed facelift head unit and vents...

Well happy!

It plays cds that my old head unit choked on, and looks so much better with piano black than the old grey one did

Took it for an oil service.

Sadly it looks like the A/C condenser is leaking, so it'll have to go back - after all we just might get a summer!

And it's ready for some new track control arm bushes. :(

Drove to Darlington for a full VANOS service by Mr Vanos
Hello [ref]PDJ[/ref], Interesting!! Of late I've been feeling the compulsion to break my pig money box and get the VANOS done by them. I hope you dont mind me asking, but i have a few questions...
1. What made you want to have the VANOS serviced?
2. Did you feel any differences before and after the job?
3. How long did it take? Do they do it as you wait?
4. Did it include valve clearance job? And the chain tensioner?
5. What was your cars mileage?
Tia.

1. What made you want to have the VANOS serviced?

Peace of mind and having the funds in the bank right now.

2. Did you feel any differences before and after the job?

Not really as it was in its early stages of wear, there was a noticeable growl noise at around 3,000rpm with the car stationary and this is the start of the VANOS's deterioration.

3. How long did it take? Do they do it as you wait?

Turned up at 10:05 left at 14:40 I choose to hang around and wait, walked to Costa and back used 70% of my iPhone battery surfing the net well mainly this forum.
Was offered a loan car but no real value to me just waited.

The engine has to cool enough to work on it so if you left it over night it would be 2 hours quicker as it is about 2 hours to cool to ambient temp to safely work on it.

4. Did it include valve clearance job? And the chain tensioner?

Valve clearances need to be done at 20degC so no
The top chain tensioner was changed

5. What was your cars mileage?

82,000 miles

Thats a bugger about the condenser. Make sure they change the drier too . Bit more money , but a very sensible thing to do on a system that is short of refrigerant. Yes, I do A/C as my job , but not cars .............. :D

Swapped my wheels over for the spare set so my wheels can get refurbed. Really not keen on gunmetal wheels but they are only to rest on while it’s in the garage. On the plus side these spares will be up for sale soon.186FD555-0325-4322-BDB7-C4FE8C3CCA22.jpeg43BA4008-0825-4D25-9952-350DD597721E.jpeg

That's a shame! :(
I am a BMW virgin and only owned one for 6 weeks now , so wouldnt know how to strip out the condenser coil. They are pretty easy to change, just make sure all O rings are replaced in the fittings that join the pipework. Knowing my luck it would be a full front end strip down to get the damn thing out.

Yes, it seems the radiator has to come out first! :(

Still it will get fresh coolant.

Purchased a 17in spare wheel and put it in the boot, in readiness for any flat tyre situation that might one day occur! Just need a jack and spanner now...

Fitted some new rear light surround screw holder things in the hope that my boot stops leaking water in each of the side 'pocket' areas.

On removing the old yellow ones, it was clear they would have been leaking water into the boot. The new ones are longer and fit better also, so I imagine BMW changed the design at some point.

Just need some heavy rain to test it out now

I can't wait to buy a new car that doesn't require this much effort constantly! It's like a never ending saga of replacing silly little things that add up to being a massive ballache!

I only replaced the top ones, as I couldn't access the other 2 without removing the light surrounds. I couldn't figure out how to do that so left them in the hope they don't need replacing.

Just about to get her out the garrage and head for the moors. :D

I'll try and remember to grab a few pics.

Mine actually does the same thing. I think from the time I first took the lights off for the LCI conversion. Leaked ever since!

What’s the part number? I was going to give just a small rubber o ring a go... but this is the better solution but the looks of it!

Hi mate, this is the part number: 51416989691

I believe they're used on many different BMW's, so very common. I got mine from ebay for £1 each. They're probably cheaper from the dealer, but I didn't fancy driving a 30 mile round trip for them

It rained heavily today, whilst I was in work and I've since checked the carpets and they're still dry, so here's hoping that's the end of my swimming pool problem
