Don't get me wrong, I would love an Alfa. I have never owned one, purely because I have never been brave enough. When I was looking for my first car in 1985, I really wanted an Alfasud 1.5ti. My old man vetoed it, for good reason. I have flirted with the idea many times since. I do vaguely remember going to look at a 156 estate about 20 years ago. The "Alfas are trouble" voice just kept appearing so I passed.

I only had one issue and that was a coil pack which I diagnosed and fixed myself. :wink: Impressive eh? I mean me not the car. It was bought as a cheap run around but it was money well spent.

Not in my experience. The chap I bought mine from was mid 50s. I am mid 50s. The chap I sold it to was......yep mid 50s!

You are a champion of the manual gearbox, yet if only you could get over the 'looks' of the FK8 and drove one, you would be scrapping your manual BMWs and buying one. The gearbox in those is a work of art.
If Honda had been a bit more 'mainstream' with the looks, they would have sold millions of the FK8. They are a fantastic car to drive.

Just because they have a great gearbox wouldn't convince me. I've mastered the box in my MC anyway!

I much prefer N/A engines, and hate FWD scrabble-wagons.

According to Pistonheads latest comparison with the MK8.5 Golf R the FL5 Civic Type R takes 5.4 seconds to get to 60, so traction is obviously still an issue.

F33 440i. B58 engine is a peach. Fast, roomy and comfortable. Pre mid 2018s can have the MPPSK fitted, which gives more power and an incredible noise.
Or an F83 M4. More powerful but comes with 'M' tax.
Or an F13 M6 cab. Dirt cheap now to buy but very expensive to own.

M4 comp is the way to go, 450bhp out of the box, easily gets up to 530bhp, had my standard car for 18 months and no issues, the comp handles better and is the way to go.

Just find a decent Indy for servicing, minor services £250 major is £750 (servicing is every 2 years) sets of boots (Conti 7) is £750

Can get 25 round town and around 38 on a run.

That SL350 is not the one to go for, it has the old crappy 7 speed slush box, ideally a face lifted SL400 or if he can stretch to a wonderful V8, then the SL500

I will admit the engine is probably more reliable than an N54, but that's about it.

I’d buy a convertible V8 F Type or a coupe 4.7l V8 Vantage…although in reality I’d probably just buy an Exige 380 Cup or even a McLaren 650S if I could stretch that far :driving:
