What do you think of your 20i's

I love my 20i and the fuel economy works for me or else I could never drive it. It is plenty fast enough but having said that I haven't driven a lot of very powerful cars. The one thing that could certainly be better is the exhaust note - not quite as loud as I would have liked. In fact, not loud at all.
 
I had a Z4 on test this exact weekend last year when I was about to buy a 20i. They only had the 23i in stock so I drove that.

Got the 20i end of March....

Got the replacement 20i October 5th.

Use it as a daily driver for work and its ok, although I'm not impressed with fuel economy. Done about 2500 miles now and average low 30's, although to be totally fair, a lot are short journeys.

Never had performance cars, so the speed isn't an issue for me....this is bloody quick in sport mode and the right gear (I always seem to be in too high a gear!).
 
If you can afford a bigger engine output go for that , the 2.0 is ok , but .............it ain't that fast , if you're looking to cruise about only , it will be fine .....good luck what ever you get you will have a smile :D :D
 
The speed argument is subjective.

Only you can decide if it is fast enough for you.

I've had this exact conversation regarding 320d's and a 335i - if i had nothing, i'd never complain about a free 320d - it's a great car and surprisingly fast considering the MPG, but given the choice, i'd save and buy the 335i, not because it's 'better' but because i want a stupidly overpowered car that scares me and excites me when i get in it. If i had this, and i wanted a soft top that's a bit more affordable and practical .. i'd go out and buy a 20i tomorrow. The drivers seat is a nice place to be, and the options available can make a 2.0i look as good as a 35is and at the end of the year i'd have enough spare cash to rent a Pagani for a weekend!

The only thing i found with the E89 was the size of the boot with the roof down was pretty awful, but i'm a M Coupe fan so i'm probably looking for excuses in my own head :D

The E89 boot space is comprimised pretty badly with the roof down but did anyone buy it to stcik 2 labradors in the back?

There will be no settees packed in the boot of the MC though either.

Boot size was a concern for me cos I use car for work as an IT monkey and need to carry equipment around etc.

At one point I had an estate car, and found that I was the one targeted for taking all the boxes/packaging to the tip, whilst my 2 colleagues didn't, so I thought stuff that, as long as I can get a couple of PC's, monitors and keyboard etc in, then it will be ok.

All fits in fine with the roof up. If I want the top down, then I have to pack it better to put the flap down, and sometimes I wont be able to, but so far so good.

With the flap down, the postbox slit is crap, but if you pack it right, before you move the cover down, you can get a bit in there.
 
If you want the boot space, buy a hatch or an estate. Amazes me when I read reviews on the E89 and the testers bemoan how awful the boot space is with the roof down and that a TT is better. If you really need the boot space then leave the roof up :roll:

The boot space is pretty good with the roof up compared to when I looked at an MX5 which is :rofl:

The boot space was a bit of an isue for me. I came from an E85 rag top and I had just found two suitcases (tripp) that fitted very neatly - We use the zeds for month long trips in Europe . Top down all the way normally , thats why I bought a sports car. I feel that the car roof up its just another car and a bitcramped and claustrophobic.

In the E89 its one case and a half filled grip (the half filled grip is my allocation) I'm prepared to put up with that sort of restriction because I think the E89 (no matter which engine you want, need or can afford , is a sports car that looks like a sports car and not a jelly mold! (The TT we looked at)

We did a 2 week Euro tour with it theis year Ronk and ther boot space wasn't a problem. We used the Roadsterbags which maximise the space niceley.

We had almost a month away and we used the one tripp case which fitted ok and a grip - the grip had to be carefully packed to allow the cover to be latched. My thin brief case layed on top of the suit case - just!

I have been very tempted and probably make the buy Roadster Bags for this years sojourn.

Top down was the main reason we bought a zed and it seems to defeat the object to drive down thro Europe in a tiny cabin with the lid on and the air con blasting out.

All said, I bought the car with my eyes open and as tim says "buy an estate" if you need a load lugger!

Sometimes you need the top up and aircon. Days like this in Italy (got upt to 49 degrees at one point)

Wow! and thats at 16.34 8)

I had to use the aircon thro Switzerland top down to enjoy the sun but a cold blast at the body. It wasnt that hot tho.
 
I do like the look of the roadster bags, it's a good solution to the restricted space problem with the roof down.

I wouldn't bother for the E85/86 - I was about to buy a set when I found the "Tripp " cases at Debenhams . The boot of the E85 is 820mm wide and the cases 410mm wide. Two cases go in very neatly and leave space on the top for a small breifcase and light coats/sweaters . There is also a space for a few bottles etc behnd the cases.

In the E89 roof down I reckon they (roadster bags) are a good bet and will probably buy some this year.
 
We've just been away for my wife's birthday. Didn't matter this time because we didn't get the roof down anyway and only had small bags, but we did discuss what bags will fit when we go further afield with more luggage. Just showed her these and she's ordered me to by some :) Result!
 
Roof up there's not a problem and the space is more than adequate.

Let us know what you think of your Roadster bags when they arrive please. I think there will be a few more of us taking the plunge! :D

Take a look we make cases. I thought about making some to measure but ours would be a little overkill and heavy as luggage, but these look ideal and not a bad price considering they probably don't mass produce them.

I'll let you know the quality and value for money when they arrive.
 
Your kit looks very nice and man enough for the task. As you say maybe overkill for the summer holiday trip or the odd weekend away!

They have a slight wedge profile to them to maximise space and come with dust covers and a little brief case type holder to fit the indentation of the boot (we didn't use it). The quality is good and you can fit a dog in them :o
