Bored self employed builder, another direction needed. :(

Interesting that you're bored. I've got some friends in the building trade and it's made me realise how I was sold a false dream of further and higher education. If I could go back in time, I'd learn a trade.

Ok maybe bored is the wrong word, at 49 the heavy jobs are getting harder and longer to recover from, I don't want to be physically wrecked at 60-65. Giving serious thought to moving into electrics, less physically demanding and a change of scene. I know what you're getting at though, and being self employed is the best thing, I could never go to work for someone else.

Yes it is as good as it sounds  no I can't get cheap f1 tickets

I used to make bits n bobs for you guys many years ago. Always wondered what it would like working for the team instead of a sub contractor.

Yep love those kind of days Mr Wilks, rain down the neck really REALLY pees me off, power tools piss wet through, rain washing your fresh pointing away...the list is endless...that office job sometimes sounds soooo tempting..

Always find these threads interesting.

Nuclear Fusion Engineer. Currently working on a government project building a new fusion reactor for research purposes.

I am a machinist by trade. Started off as a tool maker using very old and large manual equipment. Half way through my apprenticeship the company hit hard times. I had to leave and got a job using very new CNC kit but the work was boring. I then stumbled upon a job at Oxford uni. I now run a small teaching workshop. The teaching is very repetitive but designing fixing and working on the experiments (usually when they are broke) is good fun.

Instrumentation Engineer in the slowly dying Steel Industry. Work mainly in the Works Power Station.

There are a lot of well paid and fun project outdoor jobs on this thread, anybody play tiddly-winks for a living

Profressor of Medicine in Pulmonology mainly involved in research into asthma and COPD [ no private work] .
Always wanted to be a neurologist but it just never happened when I was a junior doctor in training .
Academic medicine isn't a career I would advocate to any young trainee .

Yea perhaps i was a little cynical , the trade has been great for me but after 30 yrs i am feeling the aches + pains much more especially through winter & whilst i wouldn't say "bored" i would say ive had enough
48 now & all being well just 2 more years should see our 23 & 20 yr old on their way leaving myself & mrs w to book a 1 way ferry ticket with our Border , from that point of view its the building game that has provided a early exit strategy which i'm not sure any of my same age pals in "steady" jobs have to choose
So on reflection given the choice at 18 i would take the hammer again over the mouse or the pen

For my sins, I look after all of the CCTV and ANPR systems on the Severn Crossings and Toll Plazas

M48 Severn Bridge

M4 Second Severn Crossing

This type of thread has been done before but once again after reading through its hard to not be in awe at some of the brains that share the Z love :?

Fair play, well done to you mate; this is the exact frustration I'm suffering as I push 40.

Expectation to go to uni, go corporate etc. if we weren't a kid free household I'd be suggesting to offspring a route that inspired, drove passion and a love for what you do.

Having drilled a few holes in brick in the wet, I shudder to think about a full day / week in that miserable hell.

My job title is Director, Processing Products and Solutions. It all boils down to running a team who spend their time making sure that your Visa cards work anywhere in the world, anytime, quickly and we detect fraud as best we can.

It's an interesting job and I don't complain at the overall reward package. It does however mean leaving the house at 7:00am and seldom getting home before 8:30 pm. Don't ever do weekends though. I used to travel a lot all over Europe - usually a couple of different countries each week. Would like a balance between that and my now almost total presence in the office.

After 43 years of working it must be close to calling a close!
