What do I call my car?

When asked what car I drive, I generally say "a BMW Z4". But what about the M40i? Does anyone add that to the Z4? I've never had an "M" BMW, but we've had several BMW sedans in the past, and I've just called them "BMW 325i", "BMW 440i", "BMW 330e, etc.

Curious....it's a slow news day.

Mine was called Vrim Vrim Vi Bim. My wife's car is called Ruby. So I might suggest. Wush Vroom or Big Blue as possibilities . Have fun choosing.

It's tricky... I sometimes don't like to just say a "Z4" as people usually assume it's a small engined convertible...

However, when saying the full model name and engine size, it comes across like I could be a knobhead 😆 Plus, the average joe doesn't even know what a Z4M even is 🤷‍♂️

what you call it depends on who you're talking to, and at what point their eyes begin to glaze over...

i'd just go with 'BMW Z4' and then if they follow up with 'oh, what engine?' you can respond with M40i.

Though one thing that i will be firm on - the M40i isnt an 'M' car... :fuelfire:

Ah yes contexed... When talking to other petrol heads I called mine the M Roadster, too boost it's cred. My mate always simply referred that back to me as the BMW. I jovial put down that one, from a Porker/Jag owner.

most normal people i know practically fall off their chairs when you tell them your engine size is over 3 litres... 'it must drink fuel, you must be made of money, etc' because to them car engine sizes are either 1.4, or 1.6.

fortunately where i work now there are mostly car people who understand that 3 litres isnt really that big, indeed its pretty much the minimum size for a 6 cylinder engine (and also that most turbo 2 litre 4 pots make more power than my naturally aspirated 3 litres :( )

i am really tempted to buy some old monaro or something, so when someone asks what engine is in it, i can start with a 6  !

Thanks......but I'm still undecided!

I think I'll follow the advice above and stick with "Z4" unless someone asks "which one?".

You're right about the M40i "badge". Some have asked if my 4 litre engine is a 6 or an 8 cylinder!

I think I'd go with "Z4", or "M40" - although we have a motorway called the M40 in the UK so that might not work too well here!

Generally I say BMW Z4 and brace for the inevitable hairdresser comments.

If I'm talking to a car person I say "a Valencia Orange BMW Z4 35is, thats the one with a (lightly remapped) 3 litre twin turbo straight six, the N54 (from the 1M, you know?), with M3 front control arms and wider wheels from an M2 Competition fitted with wider Continental tyres instead of the run flat nonsense, yeah they're the Sport Contact 7's, beat the PS4S's in an online test, honestly, Google it mate." They tend to walk away about half way through.... :tumbleweed:

To me she's called Stacey, because she's loud and orange.

I call mine Samantha (Chosen by the wife) Tends to generate funny looks then people walk away without asking anymore questions which is fine by me :D

I'm okay with any "hairdresser" comments, I had a MX-5 RF not too long ago. I never heard those comments with that car, however, nor have I about my Z4. Maybe it's because I'm a slightly overweight 75 year old man? 8)

My next door neighbour told me that I was driving a hairdresser's car to which I responded by telling him that my hairdresser drove the same car as he did
