Just been wondering have we all assumed the same sized miles and gallons ? :D

Miles - ok the same where they are used :)

Gallons - I'm not so sure, for some reason I thought US gallons were about 3.75 litres and UK Imperial gallons were about 4.5 litres, am I totally confused :? here on my own ?

After a week of driving to work and back doing 300 miles of dual carrgaeway/motorway (including getting stuck in trafic on the A34 for three quaters of an hour) and 200 miles of a/b roads through towns etc i have averaged a total of 34.4 MPG according to the car.

I think If I had a week where I didn't get caught in so much traffic then I mights get 36ish

I may have a play next week, but I am guessing that im getting circa 25 on the a/b's and closer to 40 on the motorway.

I just need to find a house closer real quick to stop me from putting too many miles on the zed. :D

my 3.0 si get 26-28mpg since I purchased it, currently the overall average is 28mpg on the computer.

There's probably nothing wrong with your car, try driving like miss Daisy on the motorway at 60-70mph and see what the computer says.

I just tried it today "driving like miss daisy" at 60mph and I was getting around 40mpg but I couldnt stand it for any longer than 30 secs and put my foot down. I just couldnt believe that when people have said they are getting 40 on the motorway that they were only travelling at 60mph. Sort of defeats the object in my opinion... buy a fast car and then drive it slowly :scratchhead:

37mpg for me as an average, nearer 40mpg when I did my road trip last summer, granted that included a lot of motorway driving but alot of that was at 80-90mph heading to Nice.

Been taking it to work recently (28 miles there) with 8 miles B road, 18miles dual carriageway and the rest in town, its been getting 38mpg average, up to 39.2 on some days. I admit this is with steady driving, I have noticed that I do not seem to gain much by driving much faster at rush hour, so I just go with the flow, I will have at least 1 thrash up to 70(ish) during each drive/ trip.

By comparisson my 05 plate Vw Bora TDi (remapped to 170bhp) has been averaging 57mpg recently but that is taking it very steady indeed.

Fuel economy is massively down to driving style and methods, a big player is how you approach lights and junctions, having to start from standstill can use up a load of fuel you saved by driving steadily over the last few miles. Motorway has a technique too, just sitting at 70 isn't all there is to it, I personally hate cars that sit under the limit on motorways, being an HGV driver I cannot overtake one of these who isn't using cruise control due to my speed limiter, so i'm stuck behind going faster/slower constantly. When you hit a hill on the motorway do you power up it or let it coast up and lose a bit of speed, same with long downhill stretches, if you back off just enough then you go from consuming average fuel to mainting your speed to using virtually none.... On a car like the Z4 I would suspect peak economy is not at 60mph in 6th gear, you'll likely get better economy higher up the rev range.

I've only had my car a week but i've done a few miles, mostly commuting (mix of heavy traffic and a bit of motorway). I seem to average about 24-28mpg on the commute, I went for a blast up to Hinckley the other day (60miles) via twisty roads and really had a good play, reset the OBC and got 30mpg on the way up.... the way back I tried to drive as economically as I could on the motorway but with some slow town driving each end averaged 35.5mpg, I think 40 could be done purely on motorway, my definition of economical on the motorway involves about 80-85mph and overtaking most things and foot to the floor up the slip road.

I do have one thought, what petrol are people using? The car can adjust it's timing and so running it on 95 RON is likely to give a different result to running it on 98 RON. My motorway trip was on 95 as it was all I could find but I suspect it'd be better on 98, though the fuel costs more.

using American gallons that are about .2 smaller I get 19 mpg with only in town driving. I do have fun with it.

american gallons are smaller, now there's a suprise, i thought everything american had to be bigger hehe

I have seen 48mpg on the computer on a long motorway run
I think your definition of economical on the motorway is Time economy, not Fuel economy

Looking back, in 97-98 I had a (2-3 year old) 1.6 Astra which gave a lifetime mpg of 33.7
now, my 4 year old 3.0 Z4 has so far given me 33.6 mpg
(which should start to increase now that I have to do more motorway miles)

Shows just how much engine technology has come on. IMO the M54 is a great engine given the performance/economy balance.

My '98 Punto Sporting 1.2 85ps used to do 41mpg average but I gave that car absolute death at every opportunity (I was younger ). My 04' Clio 172 2.0 averaged 35mpg which I thought was good, but not that great when you consider my 30mpg average in the Z4. Even my 05 Civic Type R only averaged 28mpg and it was slower and lighter than the Z4...

Spot the geek...

Accumulative MPG for ownership = 30.21
Average cost per mile for ownership = £0.1572
Average cost per litre for ownership = £1.04
Total miles covered during ownership = 10,403.30
Total spent on fuel during ownership = £1,635.29
Total fuel (litres) used during ownership = 1,565.57

A throwback to the days of owning a diesel car and keeping track of my mileage and trying to justify having a diesel over a petrol. Scarily the last tank of fuel was at £1.259/litre which meant an average cost per mile (fuel only) of £0.1912/mile - that compares to £0.859/litre and £0.1233/mile when I bought my Z4 (3.0i 231ps pre-facelift model) in December 2008. But since it's so f**king expensive to run any car, it doesn't influence how I drive the Z4 at all...

i see you suffer from the same form of OCD as me, I have a spreadshee that tells me every thing, don't look at the total cost since owning the Zed - frightening lol

My next stage is to build in other costs (insurance, servicing, consumables, upgrades, personalisations) into the spreadsheet for a true cost-per-mile, but if I do that I might top myself! Also, building in some sort of guide for depreciation might be an option although that would require a bit of guestimation using current classifieds prices. I'd better stop now...

Do it! It's great to know, especially when you actually realise the guy down the road who's just bought a brand new 1.1 fiesta is gonna spend more money than a z4 3.0 driver cos he'll swap it for another crap car when he gets bored of it, but he can justify it all by saying it can do 52 mpg to tescos. It's this whole Prius thing, it cost them a massive fortune to buy the damn thing, depreciation ect then they go and sell it after doing 70 mpg for something with a bit more fizz. The only thing that can influence all of this is a: how much the car cost b: how long you keep it c: how you drive d: government costs. Now times that over a life time. People who buy small with no love and a high turn over are spending the most, regardless of mpg. And in the grand scheme of things if 45mpg is 100% then 30 is what 65%ish? It's hardly making a difference.

Ive never reset the Consumption B and its at 25
For me its generally around 28 (town and A road/motorway)
Maximum I've had is 38mpg

The weekend drive with the forum in Sussex couple of weekends back has done wonders with clearing the cobwebs... Don't bother with mpg now, just range left in the tank & miles covered.

Since the exercises, a couple of trips to Bracknell & London, combined's been working out to over 400 miles... Never ever seen that before & will do my utmost to ensure it drops back to around 325asap

3.0si dash says 28.8.. 13 mile each way to work cars still a novelty so spirited driving!

How do you reset the it? When I press or hold reset only the distance goes to zero

Mine is saying 25.2mpg over the first 1,000 miles in my ownership, mostly round town but with some A roads (almost no motorway though)......I had expected closer to 30 tbh.

My old 996 C2 with 320hp managed 29mpg and the 997 TT (with more than twice the power) got 21.5mpg but I guess it's an old car.......

I've had my 3.0si for 3 weeks now and have done 1000 miles simply because its new and I love driving it.

Driving home from work steady which is mostly motorway I have achieved 43mpg according to the onboard computer.

It's now averaged out to 29/30 but that includes town driving and the odd blast when I need to "over take"

Overall I'm very impressed with the fuel economy of the car!

i got about 36/38 tootling around France. ....but I never once had the button pressed...
too nice!
I squeezed 42 On a trip to the east coast from Taunton...that was about 60mph on the m/way 50 on the M25 and a bit of 80 and 100s for 30 mins on the way to the coast...
oh I was.nt racing mr Bean that week either....
ha ha...

I got over 99mpg once, I reset the mpg calculator and stuck it in neutral going down a hill. Cheapest 0.7 miles of motoring in the zed

:tumbleweed:

Mine ranges between 18-30mpg, but i only use the onboard display.

i know its innacurate so it makes me feel better when im trying to do the weekly 160Km dash on a monday morning....

was a fun drive this morning, heavy rain, the car trying to step out on me at 140ish... i find it keeps me awake :)
