What are my exhaust options?

Hi all,

Basically - I've tried defending my z4 for a while now and I've found I'm just lying to myself, the fact of the matter is that it sounds absolutely dry. I only have the 2.2 - but a 6 cylinder shouldn't sound this dull (stock) so I want to bypass the back box.

What are my options?

I've searched ebay etc and can't seem to quite find white I'm looking for, although I'm somewhat a novice on the topic. I just want a bolt on replacement pair of pipes that bypass my back-box/silencer/muffler (are these all different things because its confusing?) Ideally id like the exhaust tips to be shiny as well. Is that too much to ask?

I'll put the original back box back on when I get round to selling my Zed in the future, so I don't really want to weld some pipes in place. Also I kinda want to fit the pipes myself because I enjoy chores like that.

I want to spend less than £200 as well, considering its not a full exhaust kit I'm after. Please let me know if I'm being extremely naive, but remember to explain why I'm being naive and don't just call me names. :(

Hi

The exhaust on the z4 is a pain to work with as it runs from the very exhaust tip. To the manifold in the engine bay as one complete piece. The bolts at the manifold end also corrode making it very difficult to remove.
The bypass pipes where first used on the z4m witch has removable back boxes. So it was a quick and easy modification. Back boxes of drill 4 hole weld in 2 pipes re fit done a mornings work

On non M cars the whole system needs to be taken off. Or cut into and re join it some how. I would say £200 would get the work done you just have to find someone local to you to do it.

woudn't it be a lot easier to just cut the backbox open, weld the pipes inside shut so that you have basically straight pipes without a backbox, and than the backbox again? This way it looks like a standard set-up but sounds far more brutal.

By the way, I have the 2.2 with simply a small sports backbox: they basically cut the standard backbox ofo and welded another cheapo sport exhaust on with custom end tips. As I opted for the full quad exhaust set-up, I paid 500 euro or 350 pounds. So for 200 pounds including a simple backbox, is surely possible.

Cutting the box open is again possible i have done both options and to both M and non M cars.

The bypass pipe option will be cheaper its just much less work.

This week I've been activity looking for a slightly louder option for my zed & can I says its a fecking nigtmare :headbang:

I can't seem to get anyone to fit a exhaust to a z4, was going for a Remus then got mucked around with pricing, tried power flow but they won't fit to a z4? Something about the rear box profile of the Z4? Tried long life but I've heard they drone!!

I'm not keen to cut my back box up as my welding is like bird poop! All I want is a little extra tone :x

But for the non-M, if you have a brigde, you can cut and weld under the car without even dismounting anything?

Trust me welding upside down is not fun!!! It needs to come off the car!!

Guys I can help you out if all else fails. I gave done a few back box mods. I have done them without removing the back box. Now the sound is not crazy loud. PM me if your interested  and can get to ox28 I wasn't going to do to much work this year!!

Do you think the hole drilling mod would cause any issues? It's something i can try but don't want to damage anything! i.e. emission problems?

I don't see how this would cause emmission trouble, the lambda sensor is mounted on the catalytic converters. The only thing you will have is more sound and less backpressure, which is the exact same thing as a sports exhaust. If I had known this was an option, I would have done this one! Well spotted. And if it sounds bad, you can still go for another exhaust, but I'm pretty sure it will sound good.

The OP on bimmerfest said " Creates a nice rumble at low RPM and a pleasant sound but no resonance " Might be worth a go like you say....

any more info on this, would mind a bit more noise :D

I have two days to kill in May around Oxford while she's on a corse,

Going to "borrow" the extension and holesaw from our workshop guys tomorrow and have a drill over the weekend!

I'll post sound clips if I can work out how too....The plan is to do a hole at a time to gauge the tone!

Terry

Am looking forward to the result as I'm not keen on any of the aftermarket exhausts available, besides the Supersprint, but you can't do the full system on RHD.

Found a place called TGS tuning in Stockport near me - they come recommended from a friend on the drift-scene. Anyone on here got any experience?

http://www.tgstuning.co.uk/

They said they'll need to inspect the car but should cost around £200
