water proofing hood

Cheers. Just want the rain to bead off instead of soaking in.
the only problem with the rain beading on the roof, is that it takes longer to dry... i like the roof to be dry before i put it down

BMW Hood conditioner after a wash with BMW hood shampoo

x 2 and 7 years of ownership with no problems. After having the hardtop on for winter use I clean the roof with moderately warm water on first summer use which removes the creases caused during winter storage.

I prefer the water to bead on the roof, as i give it a quick wipe with the chamois and its dry.

Does the Autoglym provide water proofing? My car hasn't been rained on since I did my roof...?

Any1 recommend any specific product to use when macking the roadster top waterproof?

Is that a Sunderland accent I hear? ( Northeast joke)

I've used Renovo products -excellent, but the colour reviver you have to mask off very well and if over-applied can leak inside door shuts and be a pain to clean off later (great results like new, though), but the proofer really beads little spheres of water, and lasts a couple of years, but pricey.
The Autoglym and BMW proofers are both good too, I also used Fabsil on my old TVRs for many years, also great stuff, and so cheap, so gets my vote.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above really, but a good idea to use a good cleaner first, then dry the roof thoroughly before application.

Good idea to mask off body and windows first to save labour later.

The one which goes on after the cleaner, can't remember the name, gives good beading but I think still allows some water through- as the design was intended because when it really pisses down it looks untreated. Sorry I can't be more scientific!

Shields mate! ill try the autoglym as this seems to get the most votes and also probs cheaper then the bmw stuff!

You can get the Autoglym cleaner and proofer individually or as a kit with an applicator sponge. Seems to do a good job, you can tell where I missed a little bit when it rains :headbang:

I got the kit with the sponge... does the trick and left the roof looking clean and fresh.

I found I used a little more than half of the 2ns bottle after cleaining. It says that 250ml should treat an average sports car. I'll need to get more before the next treatment.... still got plenty of the cleaner left.

Just a thought, but why did BMW leave a layer that water could penetrate with a water proof layer below....

...doesn't that mean that the top layer should be left alone.

I'd love to see water beading on the roof, but surely BMW know what they're doing?

Been debated before Jon. Whether or not water proofing is required.

I'm happy to use a protector to make cleaning easier. I don't see any need for full water proofing.

Thanks Adamski, so Autoglym protector is good stuff?

BMW put the WP layer under the top most fabric for the same reason that outdoor equipment companies put the goretex under an outlayer. The WP membranes work well but are rather delicate and wouldn't last a season. Goretex will leak if dirty. As the dirt clogs the holes they will act like a wick and transfer water through it. The poly or vinyl coated stuff is cheap but really sun sensitive.
