Watching the fuel gauge

Had my Z4 for a week now... 2.5si auto. It's the first car I have had where I can actually see the fuel gauge going down as I am driving.
This will take some getting used to. Every time I glance at it it's gone down noticably.
I had to change the computer to stop showing miles left. It didn't look that bad on paper.
The small fuel tank doesn't help.

Cheers

Hello and welcome seggy
the last car that I had before my zed was a 1.9 td octavia, so therefore absolutety fab on fuel. It was doing double the mpg that my zed is doing, and I only have a 2.0

bought the wrong car if you are worried about stuff like that...

personally I think it does a fantastic job given the performance on offer :D

Hey guys.... not complaining at all. But it did sound like it :D

Really sharing me experience as a newbie to the car 1 week in. I didn't buy it for feul economy, but it's a bit of a shock to the system that's all.

There is a serious point though. The automatic changes at far higher revs than I would for normal driving... maybe this is why it's thirsty. If I had a manual maybe I'd be using less juice.

I'll try using the paddles for my gears and see where that gets me.

when you consider a mazda RX8 does 8MPG or something its not that bad. whenever i go past one of those munters i have a little chuckle

totally agree

I get 30MPG out of mine though which is good, especially considering that is zero motorway miles and all A/B roads

I had a 1.5 tdi Clio before my Z!!! It averaged 75-80mpg and cost me £30 a year to tax.

I'm now on first name terms with my local petrol garage attendant, and bending over on road tax! If I dont laugh about it, I cry myself to sleep

have you had a look to see what MPG you are getting? test it for long durations with auto and then paddles to compare.

i also put the better 99ron tesco fuel in and get slightly better mpg. Its also better for the car and with tesco i collect the clubcard points and it feels good to get a couple of quids worth of free petrol every now and again :D

are you really getting 30 mpg out of your 3.0? I travel 4 miles to work and I can only manage about 26-ish mpg in my 2.0! does this mean there is something wrong with my car?

No, It just means he drives like a grandma! :poke:

I get around 21 in mine.

The stated combined fuel economy (Parkers) for a 3.0 is 31MPG. The guy I bought it off got 32MPG, I drive on twisty roads so am happy with 30MPG.

Stated combined figure for a 2.0 is 37MPG. But you can't just look at the engine sizes obviously and say what should be higher, yours is a completely different engine to mine not just bigger (number of cylinders to start with).

lol

I think I've only seen a figure lower than ~30 when filling up (only time I check) once, and that was way down due to the snow :D

it all depends on the kind of roads, the speed you do, how often you brake and accelerate, even if there are hills.

if i stay at a steady 30mph in a residential area and stick cruise on it indicates something like 60+mpg iirc. if im on the same road in busy traffic it will be 25 or lower.

you just have to live with it, the price you pay for driving a nice car. and like i said, there are far worse cars in the same bracket :D

The Z4's fuel consumption has never really worried me as I came from a modified Corrado VR6, a 3.6 M5 and a 3.8 M5 and none of those did more than 30mpg anyway.

What makes it seem worse in the Z4 is the size of the tank, meaning you're filling up more frequently.

my (unmodified) VR6 ran at ~35MPG

Well, the Corrado was the closest to averaging 30mpg, but it did a lot of trackdays @ 12mpg (or 10mpg for the old 1 mile Anglesey circuit).

That's what you get for replacing the stock internals with Schrick gear (cams, valves, head, VSR/VGI, etc.).

Welcome

My normal MPG is around 26mpg thats motorway and A road driving not driving to save fuel and drops a little if i use Sport mode a lot which i tend to do now a much nicer car to drive with the sport button on but i did manage 35mpg at a steady 85mph on a run not bad for a 3.0 Auto.

Only had my Z for a week now but already become obsessive about checking the OBC for fuel consumption... not healthy. Seems frozen on 27.9 oddly, no matter how erratic my speed...

I have started going into work early before rush hour and my 26miles daily commute has so far returned 39 mpg! mainly in 6th at a steady speed with little traffic.
