I don't get most people hogging the fast lane, if I had an obviously much faster car behind me I would move over immedietly when safe to do so. I don't get how some people just can stay there for miles when it's clear that I want to get through. Is flashing actually considered acceptable? I thought it was practically illegal.

Flashing of Headlights is to let other road users know of your prescence, so No, it's not illegal.( Besides unofficially letting people out of road junctions etc.)RubyBlueZ4MC said:

I ran up the hogs back once as part of an organised race. Never again. 11 hilly miles in freezing December on icy roads with traffic zipping past.
Agree it's a dangerous road but because it's a dual carriageway people try to do 70 or 80.

I spend a fair amount of time on the french autoroutes & over 15 years have studied & learnt the art 8)
They very rarely hog the outside lane , this is purely for pulling into to pass then pull back in (it does work & for the most part keeps traffic flow at optimum speed)
They never as in NEVER flash you out ! Pull out into the fast lane with traffic approaching at your peril
If you do want to pass the car in front then position yourself approx 300/400 mm from target vehicle with indicator active
Drive a black Audi,VW,BMW or Mercedes for optimum effect , ,
or if possible any Porsche :wink: for some reason this renders them courteous & the roads are yours

I personally find the closer to london the worst the lane hoggers.
The trend also seems to sit one lane in from the right.... So as the M1 opens to 4 lanes they are in lane 3 with 2 empty inside lanes :headbang;

It is the bigger sin to hog the "over taking lane" whilst not over taking.
There will always be the sanctimonious few who have their cruise controls set to 70 who believe nobody has the right to go past.
Undertaking is fine unless the person being undertaken doesn't know how to use their wing mirrors.

I noticed the indicator always on whilst driving in france
Like many on here I keep my max speed to a GPS indicated 78 (speedo between 80 and 85). On almost any motorway or dual carriageway this is going to leave you unable to use lane 1 as its full of speed restricted HGVs and other commercial vehicles where some desk jockey has decided to fit speed limiters to his fleet as it saves him £1/decade in fuel. I'll be passing this rolling roadblock with nowhere to go and yet some twunt will always position themselves 30cm from my back bumper and flash.

I have no quarms sitting in lane 1 on cruise control doing 70mph 'undertaking' cars that are sitting for no reason in the middle lane. If I do get pulled over, I am going to ask why they didn't pull the undertaken car for undue care and attention?

All good points. I totally think you should have to be taught as standard how to drive on motorway as part of learning for test. My first job at 21 was as a sales rep driving all over the place, at interview they asked me if I was a confident motorway driver. Of course I said yes even though actually never driven on it. Got the job then panicked and made my brother go out in the car with me a few times on motorway.

There are already too many excuses used for lane hogging, whilst people who undertake have only one.. "lane hoggers".
Lane hogging is why so many motorways are opening up the hard shoulder, because of the congestion it causes, with a couple of lorries in the inside lane and the two outer lanes snarled up, and the so called 'fast lane' having a queue of traffic trying to get past lane hoggers.
When the hard shoulder is opened the middle lane hoggers only move to the inside lane (if at all), leaving me to go down the hard shoulder unhindered.

I find it rather amusing that people justify an illegal undertake ( which we are talking about at speed not in a traffic queue) because someone hogs the middle lane and the Highway Code recommends they move to the left.
It's a bit like saying its ok to burgle someone's house because didn't follow advice and they left the front door unlocked....
Do what you will, but drive safely and don't try to claim its legal or better...

Stern warning received about the dangers. I do some stupid things on the road, less as I get older and value my car and life more and more...

I take your point about the police though - I would probably be polite and apologetic, it has served me well in the past
