Wanted: Z4 Coupe, '07-'08, manual

I'm arranging a test drive (once this snow clears!) of a Z4C that is being held and marketed by a friend of the owner, as the owner is abroad.

Obviously the V5C will be signed by the owner, and I have no reason to doubt that the owner's friend has his authority to sell the car, but how do I cover myself in case he doesn't?

Just wondering if anyone's been in this situation before.

Thanks!

Wait till he is back, it wont sell meantime. Also there should be several others matching your requirements, I like your wanted thread, stick to your guns, find your car and enjoy it.

I had the exact same situation buying my Z4C last march.

The owner was abroad with work and his friend sold the car, I bought it from a different address than what was on the V5 & paid cash after travelling 5 hours from York to Southampton!

The owner had signed the V5 & his friend seemed very genuine, he showed me a photo of the owners passport, then pictures of him & the owner on his phone along with a letter from the owners stating his friend can sel the car on his behalf. I thought it was a bit dodgey at the time especially as I got the car at a steal of a price, but the V5 arrived with me & Ive had no problems since and its been 10 months.

I carried out a HPI check before looking & also the day before just to make sure no Stolen marker came flagged up. The HPI was clear both times

Hope this helps :D

Thanks for the help guys.

Fatmikey - sounds like we're in a very similar situation. I imagine it must happen quite often when people have to leave the country and a car behind. I understand the chap marketing the car and the seller are in fact father and son so it makes a lot of sense. Definitely going to do the HPI check and get photo ID for both. I've already made a few other enquiries and everthing fits. Going to view this sunday!

How many keys should I expect to see? 2?

You should in an ideal world get 2 matching key fobs with buttons etc. Make sure they both lock/unlock the car and boot. Then a 3rd 'valet' key which is plastic and for emergencies; so 3 in total...

Good luck with the viewing :) Make sure you take the Z buyers guide/checklist, very useful. Forgot who's sig it's in though?

v8matt,
not fancy mine ?
the advert above yours......

David

Mileage is above my spec at the moment, and I'm actively looking to avoid sat navs, but it does look lovely.

On the point of mileage, how much should I expect it to affect Z4C prices?

I'm currently looking at one that is a '57 plate, and has 30k on the clock. One website I looked at said 60k was the norm for this age of car so should I expect a significant uplift? (assuming all else being equal)

why are you avoiding sat navs?

i prefer a tomtom but i would not dismiss a factory fit sat nav

Aesthetic preference mainly!

I'm used to a Tomtom, plus I don't want yet another thing that might go wrong and require expensive repair or replacement - knowing me I won't bother dealing with something like that and so will have to stare at the dead weight on my dash for ever more...

Yea it does sound like a similar situation. Your sounds a little better when its father & son! Im sure they will understand if you asked for some sort of ID though

My car (advertised here) seems to fit your criteria... Interested?

I think we exchanged a few emails via Pistonheads. I do have my reservations about the blue interior but it looks a gorgeous car, sure it won't be around for long :)

One other issue for me is that I've had a silver car for 10 years so I think I need a change!

I'm looking at this one:

Does anyone have any thoughts? Price looks competitive for the miles though obviously not loaded with extras.

Looks good value for the age / mileage on the face of it. Not sure if you would be phased by being the 4th owner in just 5/6 years. I was in the same boat with this and decided it didnt bother me.

When I get home I can look at options and actual valuations by myself if you like?

Thanks that would be much appreciated. I will probably run a valuation search on autotrader / parkers before viewing.

Hadn't thought about being concerned about number of owners. I guess one was BMW so hopefully they looked after it!

Its a YF plate so its possibly come from BMW Thorne like my car, see thread here for more info:

Right, heres the spec:

Here's the value when new based on options:

Here's the value put into my depreciations calculator.

However its actually 5.3 years old so I calculate its value at average mileage for the age and good condition at : £11,569.

Adjust for mileage and I say its worth : £11,844 if its in good mechanical condition and has good history to back it up.

So good value and worth a punt at £11k if you ask me..

Bluey can you do the same valuation on that Skoda, pleeeeeease?!

Sorry bud I dont know how to calculate the original value of the car (options + original OTR price) .. but if you send me what you think it was, plus date of first registration I'd be happy to calculate the depreciation for you...
