Wading depth

Tim *sigh* on this forum you make various comments on various posts and very, very rarely keep going back to add more and more comments to other people's posts whether they agree with you or not.
Quite clearly with me you love getting your tiny stick out to keep prodding and cannot leave it alone.
Ranski called you out on it. You don't seem to do it to any of the men do you? Scared maybe?
I am tired of being a lady in dealing with you so I'm not going to any more.

So, mind your own fucking business if I wish to drive my car through a foot of water I will. It is no business of yours. You made your allocated comment as is normal on a forum, to keep going back to comment over and over makes you look like a twat.
At least I drive my car not baby it up in the garage for half the year.

And OP, I have sent you a message but wish to say on the thread I apologise for the above degeneration of the thread.

I'm not going to continue commenting on here any more as a good thread has been ruined enough already. Sorry flybobbie.

The sexual tension in here is off the scale!

In carols and other peoples defence, sometimes you simply cannot tell how deep a flood is anyway, it can be hard to judge. Our works car park is quite deep and I didn't want to drive in, the security guards told me to stop being so dramatic and just drive though.

  sexual tension?? I wouldn't touch THAT if my life depended on it!

Like I said, it did no harm to my car and I do think it was because I drove through at decent speed and pushed the water out the way, no other explanation. You can see it was a good few inches deep on the pic.

Driving through water of an unknown depth unless you genuinely have absolutely no choice ( and I cant think of many such reasons ) is absolute madness. No matter what technique you employ, you have no idea whether the road surface is still intact or whether there is any significant debris that has been washed on to the road.

I work in motor claims and its so frustrating when I listen to many many customers who come up with various tales to try and justify why it wasn't their fault when they have chosen to drive through a flood and written their car off, with many simply thinking and engine strip down will resolve the problem.

The very brief and limited embarassment of inconveniencing a stranger you will never meet again when reversing away from a flood is nothing compared to the embarassment most feel when calling their insurance company and confessing they chose to drive through a flood and written their car off. Add to this the financial impact of paying the excess, loss of no claims and increase in premiums as a result of a fault claim and inconvenience of sourcing another car .....

It's odd that Tim suggests driving through with high revs? as this increases the air flow though the intake which is the cause of most damage, water being sucked into the combustion chamber via the air box.

The exhaust isn't the problem, it's not going to flood an engine that way and there is loads of pressure forcing it back, hey if your 2 or 3 meters under then Boyles law applies, but by then you are truly fooked anyway.

As an advanced instructor (class 1) I would always suggest to go in slowly and create a bow wave, maintain the speed so the bow wave assists with progress. That's been my way and years of trialing and off-roading, I've not been caught out yet.

ps Carol love the porker :)

On the Landrover where the the air intake is on the upper front wing, the bow wave creates a lower level at that very area and as "Breadvan" says, it's the approved technique of attacking deep standing water.
Just don't stop to admire the view

In a bluff fronted 4x4 it works a treat but a the pointed front of a z4 ????

If you have and Auto Box - Manually select a gear and leave it there while going thro deep water!

Wouldn't the Porka be much less vulnerable than the zed now too? I won't pretend that I know anything about the intake layout but it would be away from the water-front surely, tucked in the side pods?? Obviously I'm not suggesting taking it on a 4x4 course haha :fuelfire:

I wouldn't take any car through the water (except my freelander) unless I had to. There's two front intakes and two sides on the boxster, probably about as high as the zeds.
The two side intakes would be the worry as the bow wave effect wouldn't make any difference on the side. Hope I never have to find out!

Yes hopefully, it is all very well saying avoid them altogether but it sometimes isn't feasible. I had to take the zed through one, which was the only route home! I wouldn't leave the zed abandoned on a country lane to avoid the flood at risk of it being nicked/stripped. I'll retract the comments about the porka then :-( I thought they might be slightly more tucked away.

That was what happened to me. No other option but to go through it. Seems I'm not such a dingbat as the lovely Tim would make out as my car was fine and I'm certain crawling through it would have resulted in disaster.

Disaster!! It was only a puddle, the water didn't even come up to your dust caps by the look of it!
