VW Golf MK 7 GTI

I'd still have the Golf. I think it looks better, has a bit more history and is probably a better all rounder. You can't simply judge a car on 'its got a big engine' or 'its not as fast as other cars' etc. Its about the all round liveability and experience. Once the initial surge for the MK7 is over, I'll look at this again with interest.

I had this beauty while the TT was in for a service a A3 Sportback 1.6 diesel S line & standard without options it's nearly £25k! :o now I don't know whether I live in the past but same as the Golf GTi I just can't believe how expensive VAG products are when there are so terribly dull to drive.

I squeezed 63 mpg out of it & I liked the free VED that it offered but to drIve it was poor but it did ride well though.

VAG have a devoted following. They could stick some wheels and a GTi badge on a dog turd and you'd have people lining up to order one and all the mags dusting off lines like "the original and still the best" due, in no small part to their massive advertising spend.

To me VW is no better or worse than Ford. It's an every day man in the street brand (I was going to say reliable, but I'm not sure they are that reliable). It's not a premium brand.

I recall that being said of BMW not so long ago.

Having had an e85 and e89 both with more build quality issues than any other brand I've ever owned I'm not a brand person any more. I'll be going simply with what i like next.

At least with Ford if you take the fiesta ST as an example they are class leading & they don't charge the earth for their cars whereas to me VW aren't class leading but you still pay a fortune for them & are far better off opting for the skoda.

You have to hand it to VAG for a terrific job done on their brand image ,
They have taken on Mercedes + BMW head on & we now see "like for like" Audi,s against their direct opposition generally more expensive for what is ultimately a repackaged VW product , quite a PR success for a brand that only 10 years ago would have been 20/30% less than their competitors

I do agree & admitted I haven't had much experience with VW but I've recently drove a couple of Audi's & their interiors just seem to make you fall for them & you tend to forget that they aren't all that exciting dynamically but by then you are already lured in as I think they look great from the outside too.

Audi interiors have been great for over a decade although I think JLR have caught up and in a lot of ways surpassed them in the higher end models. The Q7 is particularly underwhelming in this respect.

In terms of looks which is subjective I think they have fallen behind Merc in the Mainstream Models- Audis used to be about understatement ( something the new mercado do quite well) . Audi all seem to come with huge DRLs and whiter than white paint jobs which for me is a pity .

When I had an A4 years ago it was not the most exciting car to drive but after a tough day at work it was a fantastic thing to do some miles in.

You are right about looks being subjective I pretty much love the look of all Audi's yet I hardly like the look of any beemers yet I keep buying beemers!

I remember when the first A4 came out & I thought it was one of the best looking motors on the market & I do agree nowadays it does seem to be all about the show...I have lusted after an old RS2 for as long as I can remember! :driving:

Marketers love to create matrices and place (car or any other) brands in them. I'm no marketer but this is my stab at it:-

Audi - people who want to go fast in a straight line, have 4WD and like a nice interior. Driving dynamics and fun not top priority and therefore less of an enthusiasts choice

Mercedes - a slightly older, less showy customer who wants it do all the basics well and looks down a little on Audi and BMW drivers

BMW - all about the engines and the handling. Generally don't give a crap about 4WD and less concerned with interiors because they want to drive the damn thing.

VW - People who can't afford the other three but think they are better than Ford et al drivers.

Porsche - VAG bought this so it would have the driver enthusiast sector covered. Perhaps an admission that Audi didn't tick that box and was never likely to.

This is an excellent sum up I reckon & I would think it pretty much hits the nail on the head.

It's interesting that these market sectors are quite localised- VW in France has to position itself below PSA!!

It's a few years ago now but my MKV fully loaded GTI was considerably cheaper than an equivilant Megane. Audi really makes sense there as there is a real perceived difference between A3 and Golf.

I think your other categories are about right - an uncle of mine who is a long standing Merc owner said to me when I was 30 and looking at 3 series, A4 and c class - " too young yet - get an audi" .

Sadly they start at £43,300 for poverty spec.

I'd buy it over an Evoque. Simply because when I look at pictures of it I don't think on that stupid pouty Beckham woman.

How's that for brand placement and association?

I think this going to give high end Evoques a headache - knew this was going to be much higher than the 35k being quoted

FWIW, I'm on the GTi forum from my previous Golf ownership and the Mk7 section is full of little niggles with build quality. By contrast The Mk3 ST forum has none of that kind of stuff. Peoples biggest gripe with that seem to be that it wants to torque steer into the nearest ditch all the time.

Mowflow, I'd be interested in reading up a bit more on this, can you point me to a URL (website address)? EDIT: Actually I've found it and it seems the most worrisome thing is that other drivers see a Golf GTI and want to race or play silly buggers... thankfully something I've hardly ever, if ever have had on the Z.
